    3. Did you get a reply to your question? I do know that Arvilla was a popular name in the 1800's. My grandmother was born in early 1800 but her last name was Ingalls and that was her name and i found it in many names when looking through birth records in Pittsfield. If you don't get an answer, i can look it up for you at the Pittsfield Library the next time i go up. Let me know. He said he thought that this was not a uniform but either some other outfit or order, or a costume of sorts that the photogapher's studio set him up in, that it does not appear to be military. The gun has the appearance of an 1862 musket, but is not clear enough in the picture to properly id. The outfit does not fit and he is not wearing a hat, which men in uniform certainly would do, suggesting a photographer's costume. The cartridge box and the bayonet case are on the wrong side and the letters or insigna on the belt appear to be backwards, so there is a chance that the photo is backwards, but the gun and bayonet are on the right side, so you cannot tell. Food for thought. Kathryne

One of the best research facilities I have ever been to is the Library in Pittsfield. That facility is truly amazing. Most everything is digitized with search engines. Their books have been digitally indexed so that you can search for whomever you are looking for and you will get a list showing the book or collection, volume number and page number. All you have to do is look them up in that book. Some collections are totally digital with PDF files all indexed. The research assistants are extremely helpful as well. There is also a National Archives right there in Pittsfield so if you can't find it at the library you can try locating them at the Archives. By far Pittsfield, MA is the place to go if you have any connections to Western MA, Eastern NY, NH or CT. They far exceed anything that Springfield has to offer. And the area is just plain beautiful, especially in the fall. --- [email protected] wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Advice for Visiting Berkshire Cty, MA (Terri) > 2. From: Ludden, Paul [mailto:[email protected]] _____ From: Ludden, Paul [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2007 5:27 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Coons/Cummings question Dear Berkshire County researchers, My name is Paul Ludden. I live a huge distance from your wonderful area (I'm in Los Angeles) and saw your helpful information on the genealogy site: http://www.treetracingcom/berkshirec.htm <http://www.treetracing.com/berkshirec.htm> To be honest, my very specific interest surrounds the Coons and Cummings families of your area, and especially the Nassau/Renssalaer counties of NY. (But I think they came from Mass!) I'm quite stuck trying to find out about the ancestry of an Eli Cummings and his wife Eurania (Coons). I think Eli's father (and son, for that matter) were given the name, Peter. So, I am looking for information on the Coons/Cummings family 18th century and backwards. A brief list of known relatives follows: 1. Peter Cummings (and other spellings: cummin, cummins, cummings, etc) from Nassau Cnty, NY, married Hannah 2. Eli Cummings (1806-1886) (wife: Eurania Coons) 3. Peter Cummings (1852-1902) (wife: Ida Cornell) & bro.Thomas (wife:Sarah & son:William) moved to Blackhawk County, Iowa. Later Minn. 4. Owen Webster Cummings (1875-1964) 5. Elna Cummings (1905-2005) son Robert Ludden (1929-) grandson Paul (1956- ME!) and then my sons: Michael, John, & Peter. It's too bad that very little is known to us of our branch of the Coons/Cummings family. We do know that they lived around Albany/Nassau/Renssalaer, New York, in the mid-19th century. Some of them moved to the Midwest, where my branches of the family propagated. Anything you can do for us would be much appreciated. Thank you, Paul Ludden Paul R. 2. Genealogy
    3. In North Adams, there are two main hotels. The Holiday Inn on Main Street which is directly across the street from North Adams City Hall. That building not only has the town clerk, Mary Ann Abusi, who holds the death records, but the Cemetery Dept is located there. If you stay at the Holiday Inn, you are 5 minutes from Hillside Cemetery on Rt 2 and 5-10 minutes from Southview (newer) on the backroads toward Adams. This would be an affordable place to stay. The other hotel is about a 1/2 mile from there, but probably costs a little more. This is the Porches, a newly renovated suites of apts turned into hotels that harkens to the industrial in decor. This attracts a NYC dweller on a Berkshire getaway and upper class type crowd. We love it and have stayed there. You could walk to City Hall, but would be 2 minutes by car. We haven't really had any snow yet, but it was very cold today. Finally, there are B&B options if you like that. The Blackington B&B is supposed to be quaint, but I haven't tried it myself. It was only put you 5-10 minutes from City Hall. I grew up in North Adams and am happy to help with any questions. If your relatives were Jewish, which is doesn't sound as though they were, they were buried at Beth Israel in Clarksburg, MA, just over the North Adams line. North Adams to Williamstown is 10 minutes. North Adams to Adams is 10 minutes. It is all VERY close. Adams keeps its own town records once the two towns split. I don't know the year though. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 08, 2007 1:00 AM Subject: MABERKSH Digest, Vol 2, Issue 3 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1.
