He could have been visiting from some other city or lived in a nearby town. I found the 1889 City Directory for Adams on an Ancestry database. There are two undertakers listed on page 102: - Richmond and Smith on Dean Street and - Simmons, A.H. at 28 Park Street. They could be the "R" and "S". Unfortunately neither is still in business according to phone listings at anywho.com. The 1989 City Directory also lists a French Catholic Church as "Our Lady of the Seven Dolors". I would bet this is the same as the "Notre Dame" church in the city-data. I think you can find a phone number for it.

This is from the www.city-data.com web site for North Adams: Churches in North Adams include: Warren Brown Zion Church (A), First Baptist Church (B), First United Methodist Church (C), Our Lady of the Incarnation Church (D), Interfaith Church of Cosmogony (E), Bethel Pentecostal Church (F). Cemeteries: Saint Josephs Cemetery (1), Advent Cemetery (2), Blackington Cemetery (3), Hillside Cemetery (4), Southview Cemetery (5). This is from the www.city-data.com web site for Adams: Churches in Adams include: Saint Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church (A), Saint Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church (B), Saint Marks Episcopal Church (C), First Baptist Church (D), Quaker Meetinghouse (E), Old Quaker Meeting House (F), Notre Dame Church of Adams (G). Display/hide their locations on the map Cemetery: Maple Street Cemetery (1). If I were doing the research, I would start by calling the Roman Catholic churches that sound like they served a French-speaking population, and ask if they have burial records dating back to the period you are looking for. If not, ask them which cemetery was likely to be used. Then, be sensitive if they are too busy to talk to you. Remember, it isn't their job to answer your genealogy questions. You might also try calling the town Public Works departments which handle maintenance on the non-religious cemeteries. They may have card indexes of burials, and sometimes you will find a person willing to be helpful.

THe Adams Town hall clerks are great and they sent me to No Adams. Unfortuntley, they were not helpful. Would not let me look at cards or logs or anything. Would only look up a name for which I had exact info on and nothing more. Acted really put out. You know how it is, it is not always an exact science, I am sure there are bungled spellings etc. That was a year ago, Maybe its time to try again. The Death Log at Adams Town Hall had a column to the right and an R or an S was recorded for most people. Noone knew what that "code" referred to. I got to wondering recently if it might be an undertaker.

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.berkshire/5521.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have you checked at the town hall? North Adams has a cemetery office in the town hall that has file cards on all grave sites and cemeteries. It is filed by people's names. I know that when North Adams and Adams split, Adams kept the name and North Adams got the records. If you go to both towns' websites they will tell you at what date they split. Adams may have the same type of cemetery office in their town hall. The website would have the town hall's phone number to check. They could, also, give you the phone number of their historical society. They would have a list of cemeteries and funeral homes from that time period. If you google Adams cemeteries a site will come up that will tell you of the major ones in the town, too.

    3. Thanks, I need a Mary HOLLENBECK that married Horatio Hubbard and lived until the late 1840s. I have searched everything I can find and my best bet seems to be these families. It doesn't have to be from Egremont, but all the HOLLENBECKS seemed to be gathered there as were HUBBARDs. Aaron Thomas Lacy marries Margaret Murray Margaret's mother is also Margaret (dont you hate that when they do that grrr)and lives with them. Lillian is born in 1911 She marries Franklin crandall in 1928 has my grandfather Aaron Thomas Crandall The info I already had on Margarets husband is he was born in 1867 and their children are listed as Marion M Lacy Pearl Lacy Margaret E lacy then my great grandmother Lillian F Lacy I see no King Lacy on the 1920 census. He or she must have been married at that point. How could King be a female? We also had Murray as Murry because one of my great grandmothers childrens middle name is Murry.
