    3. The website is www.newspaperarchive.com. You can get a 14 day free trial, or subscribe for a short or longer period. It varies as to usefulness - some areas, like Ohio, have wonderful coverage, and some, like parts of upstate New York, aren't as good. However, there's another, free, site - www.fultonhistory.com - that has a newspaper component, basically Mohawk Valley, but it pulls in an amazing area sometimes. I'd try that, too. Use various search techniques - exact phrase, all words, etc., to see if you can find anything. I was trying to get on the newspaper archive site to see if I could find anything for you, but for some reason it won't come up at the moment. Give both sites a quick try and see what happens. Good luck! Joanne Gaudio

    1. [MABERKSH] archived news/Russo's Variety
    2. I would be interested in the site you use for archived news articles. I am interested in similar information. My great Grandfather owned a Variety Store in Pittsfield, MA. James Russo/J Russo Variety on located on Fenn Street across the street from MT. Carmel School/Rectory and Church. If anyone could provide me with information, stories, an ad or a picture, I would be thrilled to add it to my family history. At the wake of My Grandmother, a gentleman shared that anytime they were in the store, he was generous with candy, especially Root Beer Barrels. It added so much sentimentality to the rote demographics of researching and writing family histories. 3. No sorry, Dianne. None of my families really have any connection with Berkshire Co. other than that one group living there for a short time - I just found out about the grocery store from an ad I pulled up on an old newspaper website! Joanne

There was August, Anton, Frederick and maybe a couple others. Dianne Hoffman ----- Original Message ---- From: Joanne Gaudio <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 4:58:11 AM Subject: [MABERKSH] Ansell & Ripton Grocers, 1900 Does anyone have any information about the Ansell & Ripton Grocers that operated in North Adams, MA in the early 1900s. My great-great-uncle William A. Ripton was the Ripton half of the partnership, and he lived in North Adams with his family in 1900. Richard W. Ansell, William's then brother-in-law, was the Ansell half. In the 10 Sep 1900 "North Adams Transcript," Richard announced that the partnership had been dissolved and would now be known as R. W. Ansell. He also left within a few years. William Ripton had earlier started a family grocery business in Johnstown, NY, and I don't know if this store was a branch of that business or a whole new enterprise. I'm writing a family history and would appreciate any information anyone may have. 1. [MABERKSH] William DAVIS, Great Barrington
    2. Kathy Campbell
    3. I'm hoping someone may be able to help me. I am trying to find out if anyone knows anything about the family of William DAVIS who was a resident of Great Barrington in the 1790 and 1800 censuses. In 1790 the family consisted of 1 male over age 16, 3 males under 16, and 5 females. In 1800, the family consisted of 2 males under 10, 3 males 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45 and above, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 2 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45, and 1 female 45 and above. I can't seem to find any records for Great Barrington at NEHGS prior to 1800. My great-great-great grandfather (whose name was also William DAVIS) was born in Berkshire County around 1789, and he was supposedly a Junior. I don't know anything else about him other than he was married in 1820 in Troy, NY. Thank you. Kathy Campbell Jacksonville, FL

I happen to like organ music and have been to a number of local concerts. Often they were sponsored by local memebers of the American Guild of Organists, featuring local organists. They must have a web site? I can't recall all the details but if there is not a chapter in the Berkshires, I would look into the Springfield,MA chapters or Albany , NY. I know there is a shortage of church organists and people are likely to know each other. PS There is also South Congregational Church n Pittsfield.

Surnames: Cassidy Lilly Hughes Hartwell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.berkshire/5522/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It has been a few years since I posted this information. I would be glad to hear from anyone with information about, or connections to, any part of it. Luke (1833-1910) and Catherine Lilly (1837-1900) Cassidy arrived in Adams from Ireland, as husband and wife, in 1855. They had eleven children, ten of whom lived to maturity. Three sons became police officers: Thomas on the NYPD (1895-1921); Edward on the Adams PD (1900-1936), of which he was chief for 16 years (1920-1936) and George on the Lyndhurst, N.J. force (1907-1907), killed in the line of duty. All married and had children. Luke Cassidy never married. He spent most of his adult life in Long Island City, N.Y., where he worked as a streetcar motorman and--after losing an eye in a fight--as a part supervisor. He went home to Adams to die in 1946, where he was tended by his maiden sisters. There were four Cassidy daughters who were spinsters--Catherine, Elizabeth, Delia and Sarah. I understand they lived together all their lives and operated various business in Adams up through the 1950s. The last of them died in the mid-1960s. The eldest daughter, Anna, married Thomas Hughes and moved to Butte, Mont. They had a son Thomas. The next daughter, Margaret, married Frank Hartwell from Schoharie County, N.Y., separated and then rejoined him late in life. They had a daughter Patricia Hartwell. Can anybody add scope or depth to this family history?
