William was somewhere in Berkshire co. as of 1 April 1839, because I have a land deed for him and another man William COWLEY purchasing land in Mercer co. Ohio. The deed says they are from the county of Berkshire Ma. James KIRTON and his wife Amey (SMAGG)came to America from England with his family and lived somewhere in Ma.,the time from June 1837 to 1839, but I have been unable to find anything on either of these two. Im assuming William was either a son or brother of James. All the KIRTON/CURTIN's I've come across are the families that came from Ireland. In 1839 the James Kirton family came to live at this land where William had earlier purchased. If there is anyone who would be willing to do a lookup for me, or if someone is planning a visit to the courthouse Im willing to pay for some assistance. I know from personal experience sometimes the older records that are filed in the basements ! of courthouses get forgotten about. I just got back from a trip to one looking for info on James KIRTON and found nothing, until a kind soul said I was welcome to go to the basement and look through books, and there I found 3 helpful pieces of information. My big problem is finding any trace of the KIRTON family 1837-1839. Im not even certin that the James KIRTON/CURTIN family even lived in Berkshire co., only that William did. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks so much. Janine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The last name is MARONEY, not Maloney. This name stems from the Irish name "Marooney"; it is believed that the other "O" was dropped upon immigration to Canada. MARONEY is my great-granmother's maiden name! Janice Roberts Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It took me a long time to find out who Adelia/Delia really was. She was really CORdelia Potter Tefft, widow of Kenyon Tefft, who died shortly after being discharged from the army in the Civil War, I believe in 1864. I'm not sure if Betty was Betty's whole name, or if it was a nickname, but it was definitely Betty, not Bessie. (I have a card from flowers she and her daughter sent to my dad's funeral long ago...Betty Whitman.) I think a lot of census takers misunderstood what they were told, or transcribers read them wrong. Just makes it more interesting, (and time consuming), doesn't it???! Nance Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't know where Melvin was at that time. Evidently he came back, and they had my dad and moved to Pawtucket. I find them in Pawtucket in the 1930 census. My dad died in a car accident Dec. 25, 1955, so I was never able to ask him anything. We lived in PA, and I only remember one of his brothers, Frank, visiting us when I was little. My mother really knew little about his family, and she was gone before I got interested in this. I did come to N. Adams, got a copy of my father's birth certificate, and went to see the house they were listed at on State Road. I'm planning to come back up this spring and visit Schuylerville and North Adams to see if I can find any more info. Any suggestions on where to look would be very welcome! I have quite a bit about him from the Schuylerville area. I'm guessing it was fairly common to move around between states in that area...NY, MA, VT. I'm stymied as to finding Melvin's parents. I don't think he was actually Cordelia's grandson. I'm at a dead end in that search. I was hoping to find someone living who may have descended from Melvin and Grace who might know something about his parentage. Cordelia Tefft's father was also from MA...John Potter m. Lucinda Hay. Haven't been able to find anything on them either. Thanks for your help! Nance Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
