I found my missing Suzanne Daignault, died 1883, Adams MA, wife of Paul Hypolite Bourdon last week, buried in Canada, St.Cyprien Parish. She was brought there ( I presume by train) 2 or 3 days after her death. THe undertaker was Simmons as noted in a previous post becasue your copy of the record may have an S or R in a far column. One copy had it; one did not.THose initials must have referred to the undertakers. Now I had been looking for her for about 2 years but had not come across the "Canada" burial {actualy I had but had missed it the first time round}becasue there are TWO SETS of the death register made by the same person, same handwriting, BUT, they both contain slightly different inforamtion. The one I was working from sid not have the place of burial {Canada} noted on it. Hence, I was looking in Adams. I must have seen the Canada notation once in the past, but time having gone by , and wroking for the second record...totally forg! otten it. Its a good lesson to learn that there may have be more than one copy of a record! Following this information and ancestry's recent aquistion of Drouin film, I found her burial, with a mention of Adams MA in St Cyprien! So thank you again, you must have spent sometime looking for it. Laurel Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Sarah, Where did the marriage occur? I've done research in the Lee, MA records and found parents names and, in the instance of my Ireland connection, the location of their birth (possibly). Because of wording, the last part is "iffy" at best. Judy, in NC S Clevenger <[email protected]> wrote: How does one get a copy of a record of a marriage that happened on 6 Sep 1862? 2. Mine was something like that. For starters they said they were never legally married because she had married someone else. The agent sent letters to every nearby county looking for the person they said she married with no luck-but answers from men who said it wasn't them. Then in the middle of fighting for the pension she married a man who thought his wife was dead because she was sick when he left her-during the civil war. So there were letters from her saying "here I am!" I was amazed at the amount of detail in that time period. I don't think she ever got her pension. Great reading. Things I never would have found out because my Grandmother --it was her in-law would never talk about her. To add--there wasn't a lot of info in the military file. But it was only $12 as I recall. He was only in the war about a year and then they said he deserted. They eventually found him in a hospital at Ft Monroe Va. as he was ill with dysentery. He never really got over it. 3. Just to digress - my favorite example in my family is a veteran who married his 3rd wife approximately 10 days before he died at a very advanced age and his 3rd wife applied for a widow's pension. The investigator did his job, though. She didn't get a pension because it was ruled that the marriage was not legal. She had said that she split up with her last husband 10 years earlier and heard or assumed that he was dead. The investigator tracked him down in a neighboring county and essentially said, "No he isn't, I talked to him". -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 8:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MABERKSH] pension records I got my great-great grandfathers pension file and more information than I ever dreamed of. 3. If that's the case, it's worth getting a copy of the pension file at the current rate of $37. You can never tell what's in these things but you invariably get information that you would not get anywhere else. There are undoubtedly depositions from Antoinette and probably a number of other people who knew Sylvanus. Armed with his unit and pension file number, you can go here to order (takes about a month): https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonline/start.swe?SWECmd=Start&SWEHo=eser vices.archives.gov Also, based on what you said, Sarah, Sylvanus may have been one of those rare "regular army" members rather that the 99% of soldiers who were volunteers with local state units. There should also be a civil war service record on Ancestry, in addition to the pension record.
