    1. [MABERKSH] Belangers in Berkshire COunty
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: CWeissbrod Surnames: Belanger Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.berkshire/5545/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have any information on Belanger families in Berkshire County? I am descended from Mederise Belanger, daughter of Gilbert Belanger and Malvina Gagnon, born May,1875 in Quebec, married Stephen Clairmont 14 Nov 1892 in Adams, died 6 Jan, 1932 in Cheshire. She seems to have come from Quebec to northern Berkshire County alone around 1888 or 1889. It seems strange to me that she would have travelled alone at such a young age. I can find no relationship between her and the other Belangers or Gagnons living in northern Berkshire County in 1890 and 1900. I surmised that she might have come with her future in-laws, but her husband arrived after she did. I find her parents and siblings living in Canada in 1901 and 1911. There seem to be many Belangers living in Berkshire County today. Are these people all related? Thanks, Carol Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Edmund Towne served in Capt Samuel Clark's company in the 2nd Berkshire Militia Regiment from June 30- July 21, 1777. He marched to Fort Ann, NY at the request of General Philip Schuyler. In Kingsbury, NY, he apparently switched to Capt Zebulon Norten's company in the 1st Berkshire Militia on July 27, 1777 and was discharged 70 miles from home on August 14, 1777. He may have been at Stillwater, NY when discharged. There may be other instances when he served in the Berkshire Militia. These will be listed In Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolutionary War. 1. Re: [MABERKSH] Old directories
    2. Thanks so much Terri for looking. Unfortunately, that is the other KIRTON family that lived in Ma. and they were from Ireland, whereas mine were from England, and as far as I know James and Amey and their children were only in Ma. until 1839, when they left to settle in Mercer co.(now Auglaize) Ohio. William on the other hand may be either a brother to James or perhaps an eldest son. The only documentation that I've found was for William, and it is from 1839 were William KIRTON and a William Cowley together are deeding land in Ohio to a man named Dennis Halpin. It states both Williams are from Berkshire co. St. of Ma. Oddly enough, this same land and surrounding area are where James and Amey built their cabin a short time later. So there is 1 connection between James and William. The other is, William died in Mercer co. Ohio in 1841 and James was listed as his executor, but then it never stated what relationship they had. Maybe if I could find this William Cowley it could tell me more? ??? Gratefully yours, Janine ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Hi Janine, I looked on ancestry and only found three James Kirton's for 1931, 1932, and 1970 in the MA City Directories. There were 18 entries for William Kirton which were all from the late 1800's-early 1900's (Boston, Newton and Springfield). I found no entries at all for Amey Kirton. Wish I could help more but that's all I found with the directories. I did find a James Kirton (birthplace Ireland) in the 1870 census but the female adult's name was listed as "Mrs." and there was a girl named Katy living in the house. Does that ring a bell? If it does I can send you the image.
