My ancestor was Nathaniel Finney, son of John Finney and Ann Toogood, who was born on 08 Jan 1720 at Swansea, Bristol Co., Mass. [1] [5]. He married Hannah Wood on 03 Sep 1740 at Swansea, Bristol Co., Mass. [1]. Hannah died in 1756. Nathaniel, widowed, and at least three of his children moved to Sackville, Nova Scotia (now part of New Brunswick) about 1761. It appears that Nathaniel married a second time (it's suspected that his second wife was the widowed Judith Towers nee Briggs) and they had a daughter named Molly who was born on 07 Apr 1763. Information on Molly is recorded in the Sackville Township Book. The 1770 census for Sackville lists the household of Nathaniel as having 1 man, 1 women and 2 girls. He may have also been the Nathaniel Finney listed in the Jan 1803 listing of inhabitants of Sackville. Nathaniel's descendants had spread out to other parts of New Brunswick and Maine. According to Howard Finney's "Finney-Phinney Families in America" (1957), Nath! aniel died on 24 Sep 1809 in Machias, Maine, at the age of 88. I'm curious the source of the death information and if it specifically indicated his age and possibly other relationships (i.e. wife or parents). Howard Finney's book indicates that this was the Nathaniel Finney who had married Thankful Tupper, but this appears to be in conflict with the Sackville records. Thankful Tupper, daughter of Samuel Tupper and Hannah Fish, married a Nathaniel Finney, on 13 Jan 1763 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., Mass. [1] [4]. The "Vital Records of Sandwich" lists this marriage as well as the birth of two sons: Nathaniel on 11 Jul 1765 and Josiah on 01 Sep 1767. Both sons survived childhood and later married, but are not counted in the 1770 Sackville household. This, as well as Molly being absent from the Sandwich records, is why I feel that we are dealing with two separate Nathaniel Finneys. It's my understanding that the family of Nathaniel and Thankful moved to Maine about 1769 and are listed in the 1790 census for Machias. I also do not think that this was the same Nathaniel who married Abigail Hatch. I show Nathaniel Phinney, son [1] of Samuel Phinney and Hannah Ray, being born on 10 Dec 1733 at Barnstable, Barnstable Co., Mass. [1] [2]. This Nathaniel married Abigail Hatch, daughter of Ebenezer Hatch and Hannah Davis, on 18 Dec 1758 at Falmouth, Barnstable Co., Mass. [1] [3]. The family of Nathaniel and Abigail appears to carried on with a number of children. It's my guess that the Nathaniel who married Thankful Tupper was the son of Joshua Finney and Hannah Curtis. Their son Nathaniel was born about 1732 at Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Mass., and was baptized on 11 Apr 1736 [1]. Hannah Curtis had remarried Jirah Fish on 28 Jul 1745 at Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Mass. [4]. Jirah, Thankful's uncle, and Hannah, Nathaniel's mother, had moved to Sandwich. Further, this Nathaniel had a brother named Francis who had married Anne Tobey on 30 May 1764 at Sandwich, Barnstable, Co., Mass. The Tobey family name seems to come up again with the family of Nathaniel and Thankful, so it appears that members of the Tobey family also left Sandwich and moved on to Machais. The following children of Nathaniel and Thankful had married into the Tobey family: Nathaniel Jr.'s second wife, Permelia?, was the widow of Matthias Tobey; Jirah married Rebecca Tobey; Hannah married Elisha Tobey; and Alvin married Temperance Tobey. All these Tobeys were children of Matthias Tobey and Hannah Nye. I found much of this information at the PhinneysPlace website (although I've interpreted things differently) and this site included the following citations: [1] Howard Finney, "Finney-Phinney Families in America; Descendants of John Finney of Plymouth and Barnstable, Mass., and Bristol, of Samuel Finney of Philadelphia, Pa., and of Robert Finney of New London, Pa.".
