I need to investigate a reported notion of the origins of Dolar Davis of Barnstable, Massachusetts. A woman who was rude, vague, and doesn't necessarily know what she is talking about wrote me with it, and I could get nothing more specific out of her, but it was very specific information, and I'm finding variations on it on a number of web sites. But noone ever cites any reliable source information. One person said careful, there seems to be no documentation for this idea - which tells me he couldn't find it. He didn't say what he'd done to try to substantiate it. Another cited two people; Lynn Hammond and Lyman Davis Graham II, one of whom has posted the same information to this list but without giving any source information, and the e-mail address she posted it from no longer works. You'd think "Lyman Davis Graham II" would pop up pretty quickly in Google, but he did not. Everyone else cited variously FTW, Ancestry world trees, various incarnations of the Mormon Ancestral File, and various gedcom files, each other's web sites, and some web sites whose links no longer work. A previous discussion about Dolar Davis's roots on the Northamptonshire list turned up the information that the parish records for Bennefield exist from 1570 and are available through the Mormons, where they might as well be located on the moon for all the practical help that is to me. If they were available on a web site for a fee, now, that would be useful. The woman who was short, vague and rude - really not sure why she wrote at all except to inform me that my information on Dolar Davis is wrong - gave me three sources. The Barnstable Historical Society in Maine, USA. Mind you, Barnstable is in Massachusetts. The Barnstable mailing list, where no such information has ever been posted, and nothing from her on the subject of Dolar Davis. The "English Records Office", which is a fee -based service, under the topic "a2a". I can find no such thing in Google, but I have posted to the Northamptonshire list and they'll know what she's talking about if she was talking about something that exists. Here is the information she gave me. 1. Rees or Reeze Davis (William1) was born in I have no information on him.. He married first name unk. Davis, maiden name unk. . She was born in I have no information on her. . Children of Rees or Reeze Davis and first name unk. Davis, maiden name unk.: i. 2. Ichabod Davis was born 1548 in Bennefield, Northampton, England and died 1603 in England. 2nd Generation (Children) 2. Ichabod Davis (Rees or Reeze2, William1) was born 1548 in Bennefield, Northampton, England and died 1603 in England. He married First name unk. (Susy?) Davis, Maiden Name Suzy? About 1592 in Bennefield, Northampton, England. She was born 1556 in England and died 1603 in England. Children of Ichabod Davis and First name unk. (Susy?) Davis, Maiden Name Suzy?: i. 3. Dolar (Dams?) Davis was born 1593 in Bennefield, Northampton, England and died June 1673 in Barnstable, Banstable Co., MA. ii. 4. Rezin Davis was born About 1597 in Bennefield, Northampton, England. iii. 5. Isaac Davis was born About 1598 in Bennefield, Northampton, England. iv. 6. Andrew Davis was born About 1599 in Bennefield, Northampton, England. v. 7. Robert Davis was born 1608 in Bennefield, Northampton, England and died 1693. I am wondering if the births of these people came from an actual source, then why there aren't specific dates. According to other sources on the web Rezin and Robert also went to New England. She is the only one who had Isaac and Andrew listed. Here is what I previously had for Dolar Davis. Dolar Davis is first found as a servant in Horsmonden, Kent, which is four counties and 106 miles from Bennefield, Northamptonshire. His employer left him a substantial bequest, and he married into the prosperous Willard family of Horsmonden. Those records have been found at the Horsmonden parish church and another parish two miles away. Then Dolar Davis went to Massachusetts with two Willard brothers in law and after a peripatetic career ended up in Barnstable, Massachusetts. He was a carpenter by trade - which, as footloose as he clearly was, provides absolutely no motive to have moved to a quaint rural village 106 miles from where he was born. Nor does he appear to have been a firebrand Puritan, though the controversy over Rev. Hooker apparently induced him to move across a river. By all accounts he was a quiet man. The notion that Dolar Davis came from "Benefield", Northamptonshire, is an old one and has been caused to be researched several times. Google Earth cannot find any Benefield, but to make sure there are not or were not at one time two separate places in Northamptonshire, Benefield and Bennefield, I have asked on the Northamptonshire list if these are two different places. Horace Davis, in "Dolar Davis, a sketch of his life, with a record of his earlier descendants", which is online at Brigham Young University library, reported that so in so reported to so in so that all of Dolar Davis's ancestors are buried in the churchyard at Benefield, Northamptonshire, but a search of that graveyard found nothing. He also stated that he thought Dolar Davis was from Kent since he turned up there and many families named Davis in Kent, and that searches all over England have turned up no record of Dolar Davis's origins. It is quite a distinctive name, albeit spelled a variety of ways, like Dollar, Doller, Dollard, etc., It appears to have been pronounced "Dollar", though this may have been too much for descdendants who insisted on "Dolar", which sounds far more like a proper Puritan name. It is not impossible that this is not the name he was christened with. He, his inlaws, his inlaws' closest associates, and his descendants liked to make money and particularly were rather in love with speculating. A letter from Rev. Edward M. Moore, vicar at "Benefield", dated 27 Oct 1879, was published in the NEHGR in 1880, stating that he searched the parish register and there is noone by the name of Davis to be found. You can see why I doubt whether Ms. Rude knows what she is talking about, but the report is too specific not to check out. Does anyone here have any knowledge about it?
