Found this and thought it very interesting! It is an excepted factor and a proven one in some courts and Congress! _____ Mary Hyanno (Little Dove) Mary Hyanno, wife of Austin Bearce, and my first Indian Ancestor on record, had flaming hair, a very light skin, the color of bright burnished copper and was very lovely and fair to look upon. Austin Bearce, born Europe 1618, Married Summer of 1639 under Pagan Indian marriage rights at Mattachee Indian Village Cape Cod. Mary Hyanno, born 1625 Cape Cod, a Full Blood Indian Princess, dau. of John Hyanno, Mattachee Sagamore and wife Mary, full blood Indian Princess, dau. of a M.V. Sachem. John Hyanno son of Ihyannough, Mattachee Sachem - Cape Cod and wife a Full Blood Princess of the Narragansett's, dau. of a sachem. During the summer of 1933 Bro. A. Merlin Steed of Compton, California came in contact with one Franklin Ele-wa-tum Bearse, who had proven his identity as an Indian before the courts. In doing so he established the fact that the wife of Austin Bearse, his ancestor, was Mary Hyanno, an Indian princess and daughter of John Hyanno, Sagamore of the Mattachee Indians of Cape Cod, Mass. These Indians were a branch of the Wampannoags or White Indians. "Austin Bearse was the 4th great grandfather of Jacob Hamblin, through his daughter Sarah Bearse who married John Hamblin. They raised a large family of children and many of the prominent families of America today can trace their ancestry to Mary Hyanno, the flaming haired princess of the Wampannoags. "The evidence as to the identify of the wife of Austin Bearse is found in an unpublished manuscript, entitled: "Who Our Forefathers Really Were. A True Narrative of Our White and Indian Ancestor," by Franklin Ele-wa-tum Bearse (a Scaticoke and Eastern Indian). This manuscript is a certified copy of an original sworn statement now on file in the office of the Litchfield County District Court, in Connecticut, and accepted by the State Commissioner in Charge of Indian Rights and Claims as an authentic and legal declaration of lineage. It bases its claim as to the identify of Austin Bearse's wife upon statements in the original diary of Zerviah Newcomb, who married Josiah Bearse, a grandson of Austin, and who wrote from personal knowledge of the facts. Her diary is called, "A True Chronicle of the Bearse Family." "It is said that the above manuscript is deposited in the Congressional Library and states that Austin Bearse married by Indian rites at the Mattachee Indian village Mary, daughter of John Hyanno, a Mattachee Sagamore, and son of the Sachem Ihyannough who befriended the Pilgrims on their first arrival. In Zerviah Newcomb's diary, Austin Bearse was said to be of the Romany or Gypsy race, and the name was originally Be Arce. He belonged to a family of Continental gypsies who had emigrated to England. There was great persecution; for some minor infraction of the English law, Austin was deported to the colonies. On arriving at Plymouth, Austin was the only prisoner allotted to Barnstable. No Puritan girl at that time would marry a gypsy, as there were eligible Puritans to select from. It was therefore natural that he should marry an Indian Princess. "Further it is said that Mary Hyanno was a lovely flaming-haired Mattachee princess. Her people had an ancient tradition that a long time before white men had landed on their shores and intermarried with them. This probably indicates a Viking descent, and why the Indians were called Wampannoags (White Indians). Mary's ancestry is given as: 1. Ihyannough, Sachem of the Mattachees 2. John Hyanno, md. No-pee, dau. of No-took-saet 3. Mary Hyanno, md. Austin Bearse. Austin BEARSE and Mary HYANNO had the following children: 2 i. Mary BEARSE was born in 1640 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. She was baptized on May 6 1643 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. 3 ii. Martha BEARSE was born in 1642 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. She was baptized on May 6 1643 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. 4 iii. Priscilla BEARSE was born on Mar 10 1643/44 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. She was baptized on Mar 11 1643/44 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. She died on Mar 30 1712 in Yarmouth, Barnstable Co., MA. +5 iv. Sarah BEARSE. 6 v. Abigail BEARSE was born on Dec 18 1647 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. She was baptized on Dec 19 1647 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. 7 vi. Hannah BEARSE was born on Nov 16 1649 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. She was baptized on Nov 18 1649 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. +8 vii. Joseph BEARSE. 9 viii. Hester BEARSE was born on Oct 2 1653 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. She was baptized on Oct 2 1653 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. 10 ix. Lydia BEARSE was born on Sep 30 1655 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. 11 x. Rebecca BEARSE was born on Sep 26 1657 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA. +12 xi. James BEARSE. Sources: Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families Augustine Bearce born Europe 1618, a full blood Gypsy of the Romany Race, deported by the British Govt., on the Confidence of London 1638, entered on the passenger list as Augustine BeArce, single age 20 years; married summer of 1639 in Machatache Village Cape Cod, under pagan Indian ceremonial rights, to Mary Hyanno full blood Wampanoag Princess. Dau. of John Hyanno Sagamore at Cummunaquad Barnstable Harbor. She was a granddaughter of Highyannough Sachem of all the Cape tribes; Mary Hyanno's mother was a daughter of the ruling Sachem at Gay Head M.V.I. (Martha's Vineyard Island) of that period. At the time of the marriage of Austine and Mary, some of the best land in Barnstable County was ceded verbally and held jointly by old Highyannough to Austine and Mary, and was held by the family for three generations, without any written deed; Augustine Bearce had committed no crime, but was deported for life to the colonies, because he was of Romany Blood, and was caught on British soil. In those days at Plymouth no Puritan maid would marry a Romany, on account of religious and racial scruples, so Austine took to wife, lovely flaming haired, Mary Hyanno, (my tradition states that Mary Hyanno had red hair) who had just reached the age of puberty; Austine joyned the Puritan Church in 1650 for the protection afforded, and Mary joyned the church that same year; Austine was made a freeman in 1652. Austine and Mary had two sons and nine daughters; first child Mary born in 1640, Martha 1642. Highyannough's wife was a daughter of the ruling Narragansett of that Period; Austine and Mary lie sleeping at Barnstable, Highyannough and Squaw up the cape, and John Hyanno, Sr. and his son John Hyanno, Jr. at Gay Head M.V.I. The marriage of Austine and Mary was a powerful factor in preventing Highyannough and the Cape tribes from attacking the English; Highyannough went to sleep in 1641 past 87 years of age; so states the Zerviah Newcombs Diary. > >Sources: >26 June 1939 - From Gypsy Lore Society, University of Liverpool, England CopyrightC Mooncusser Enterprises <http://members.aol.com/capemoon/mooncusser>

Surnames: OWEN, RYAN, HALPIN, CLARK, DAVIS, MOORE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0EB.2ACE/386 Message Board Post: Hi Everyone, While researching my OWEN lineage, I've found a disconnect on my g-g-g-g-grandfather (?) Owen, who was living in New York when my g-g-g-grandfather, Charles C, Owen, was born, ABT 1807. I do not know when (?) Owen himself was born, or where, but I have traced our ancestors back to Wales, and our Owen Immigrants were WIlliam, Richard, David and John Owen, who arrived in and around MA and VA in the early-to-mid 1600s. I am searching for the parents (names unknown) of Charles C. Owen, b.1807 in New York, d. UKN, in Lapeer Co., MI. I estimate that Charles’ father (the focus of our search) was living in (Orange or Essex Co?) New York, between 1800 and at least 1810. I do not know where he was born, or if he also relocated to Michigan. Charles C. Owen was my g-g-g-grandfather, and married Elizabeth Clark, m. UKN. They had several children, and I believe they were all born in Michigan. According to the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Federal Census records in Lapeer County, there were 9 or 10 children, including Julia, b.1841, Clark, b.1842, and Henry, b. ABT 1844, among others; possibly an older girl, Mary, and several younger children. Henry Owen was my g-g grandfather, and the father of Carroll Clark Owen, b.1885, in MI, d. UKN. Carroll was my g-grandfather, and married Lela G. Davis, m. UKN. Carroll had a brother named Fred, and other siblings. Carroll Owen was the father of Marion Clark Owen, b.1909, Lapeer Co., MI, d.1984, Lapeer Co., MI. Marion was my grandfather. I am aware of other siblings, but I don’t have all their names. I believe he had a brother named Max. Marion Owen married Malinda E. Ryan, b.1911, Lapeer Co., MI, d.1 Feb 2001, Lapeer Co., MI. Malinda Ryan-Owen was the daughter of John H. Ryan, b.ABT 1867, and Carrie Moore, b.ABT 1871. Carrie's parents were Oscar Moore and Malinda (Melinda?) Shurter. Oscar's father was SIlas Moore, b.UKN. John H. Ryan was a son of an Irish Immigrant, Thomas Ryan, b. ABT 1835, and Ellen Halpin, a daughter of Mark Halpin, b. ABT 1808, IRE (?). Mark also had a son named John Halpin, b.(?) West Point, Orange Co., N.Y. Thomas Ryan had brothers named Patrick and Andrew, all born in IRE. Their father was Thomas Ryan, b. ABT 1808 in IRE. I do not know when the 3 brothers arrived in the U.S., who their mother was, or if their parents also left Ireland. The above referenced families lived in Lapeer Co., Michigan, and the Owen and the Ryan families were land-owners in Lapeer County during the 1800s-1900s. If anyone has any information on these families, particularly on the parents of Charles C. Owen, b. 1807, N.Y., d. (?), Lapeer Co., MI, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you!! Hi: For anyone who descends from Benjamin 1 Nye who settled at Sandwich and m. Katherine Tupper... The NEHGS Register Oct. 2004 and Jan 2005 has a two part article on the ancestry of Benjamin. It goes over some of the claims made in "A Genealogy of the Nye Family", 1907, by George H. Nye and Frank E. Best. If you don't subscribe, check your local library to see if they subscribe. I have two "maybe" Nye lines that are a definite work in progress! Chris Chirokas Westford, MA
Hi: I'm bleary eyed from searching the Internet and hoping that someone may know the answer to this! There was a Benjamin KELLEY of W. Dennis who served the Lifesaving Service at High Head in Truro. He was 32 at the time he joined on in 1886, so born about 1854. I have read about him in Dennis Historical Society Newsletters and Nancy Thacher Reid's book on the history of Dennis (both offer incredible information for anyone with Dennis roots). I'm wondering if this was the Benjamin KELLEY born W. Dennis 16 October 1854, son of Benjamin and Mercy (LEWIS) KELLEY. I only have his birth record. His marriage is not recorded in Dennis VR and there is no gravestone in Dennis for him listed in Burt Derick's book on Dennis Cemetery Inscription book. So, it does seem he left Dennis. I haven't searched Truro records yet for him. Thanks, Chris Chirokas Westford, MA

Mary Davis born about 1731 to Job Davis and Mary Phinney? Would anyone have information on Mary's parents? Mary Davis married Thomas Young June 26,1755 in Barnstable, Barnstable MA. The marriage information came from the Sturgis but have nothing on Mary except her marriage! Their son Bangs marries Hanna Buck and their daughter Sally marries Henry Custis. Thank you
I saw only phrases of the will and wondered which children were resided in Sandwich and Yarmouth. I see that Joseph and Mary Buck supposedly living in Sandwich. Joseph marrying (1) Rose Newland and (2) Remember Jennings and Mary marrying John Garrett. I would like to find where these and other children of John Buck were living at which city at the time of his writing of the will. Does anyone out there have a full copy, not an abstract of the will? Kevin, John Buck was of Scituate, Plymouth Co (not normally the focus of this list) but his will mentions children in Sandwich and Yarmouth. Perhaps others have information on them. I checked the Scituate VRs, Scituate church records, The Mayflower Descendant and Bangs' Scituate Town Records to find the following. Because of the four year gap between Benjamin and Deborah, I wonder if there's another child. I found no mention of his first wife. I didn't find the Garret spouse. Hope this gets you started. I am trying to uncover any information on John Buck and his wife, Elizabeth ( ) and all their children. Is there a reliable source, besides vital records, that I can gleamed information from. I do know that John married Sarah Faunce, 26 Apr 1693, in Plymouth. Any and all information will be welcome. Kevin
Hi: Reading about the survival of Anthony and Elizabeth THACHER got me curious about some of the Thachers I have in my database. I'm wondering if anyone knows how the following woman descends from John 2 Thacher and wife Lydia Gorham: Hannah THACHER born Yarmouth Sept 1771, dau of John THACHER and Hannah MATTHEWS. Hannah married Silvanus KELLEY (my fourth great uncle and cousin in more ways than seems healthy!) at Yarmouth 3 Feb 1791. She died Yarmouth 8 Oct 1849. Silvanus was born Dennis 29 Oct 1764, the son of Eleazer KELLEY and Hannah BAKER of Dennis (I descend from Silvanus' brother Elihu). I don't have his death information, but Yarmouth VR p 549 has a Silvanus KELLEY died abroad May 1810, aged 43 years. Not sure if this is him since the age at death wouldn't be correct. He definitely died before Oct 1849 when Hannah is called a widow in her death record. Thanks for any help you can give, Chris Chirokas Westford, MA
Hi Everyone: I spent some of this weekend reading, which the blizzard here in Massachusetts gave ample time for. One book I started is Edward Rowe Snow's "Storms and Shipwrecks of New England," 1943. My local library has this old copy of the book, but I believe it has been reprinted in more recent history. Many of the stories take place in Cape waters, so is an interesting read. One story that is probably very familar to Thacher descendants is about the Great Hurricane of August 1635, in which the "Watch and Wait" was wrecked and all on board died, with Anthony and Elizabeth (Jones) Thacher being the only survivors. Although I don't descend from this couple directly, I'm related to Elizabeth as her sister Dorothy Jones (ca 1603-1679)who m. Richard Sears (ca 1595-1676)is my 9th great grandmother. Anthony was one of the founders of Yarmouth and most Cape Thachers descend from his son John. The island off Rockport/Gloucester that Anthony and Elizabeth washed ashore on is called Thacher Island and the lights put there to aid mariners are called Thacher Island Twin Lights. There's an interesting article online about the lights at http://www.lighthouse.cc/thacher/history.html. The second book I read is fiction, so not helpful in genealogy, but I really enjoyed it. "Blackbird House," by Alice Hoffman, published 2004, ISBN 0-385-50761-5. It tells the fictional tale of the many people who live in a Cape Cod house over a period of 200 years. Her stories always have a mystical quality, so not for everyone. I really enjoy finding the houses my ancestors lived in and thinking about their lives there, so it was very interesting to me. Just thought I'd give out a few suggestions for people looking for some reading this winter. Chris Chirokas Westford, MA

I'm from the Hyanno, Bierce - Bearse, Hall line. Mine is Pricilla Bearse - Bierce who married John Hall. Sent for births in Barnstable and the clerk explained that there was a reason why the wife isn't listed natives were not listed on the records of that period. Got grief on that one to from a Mayflower descendant. I'm unsure if it is their family or not but I believe what a hired gun genealogists has come up with and that they are my multi great grandparents. Remember he married before he joined the church in the Indian village and there is no record of his marriage or any other. Records of that period are very good in this area so when they show me proof that he married someone else! I'll keep Mary Little Dove Hyanno in my records...... Native Americans have claimed both from sometime and so will I. There is also no record that Austin or Augustine is of English blood either or gypsy!
