    2. Kathy Wells
    3. Hello Barnstable Researchers, I am in hopes someone can do me a favor. On the Barnstable Twp, 1830 census, pg 324 is a Mary Gorham. I need to know the census numbers on this family........in other words, what was her age bracket? Are there any children and if so what are the age brackets on them. I don't have access to census, and I hate to make a trip to the Dallas Library just to see the ages on one census page, especially if someone has easy access to that information. I sure would appreciate any help anyone can offer. thanks so much, Kathy Wells.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0EB.2ACE/395.1 Message Board Post: This webpage will give you contact information for the town clerk of Wellfleet, including an email link--although that might not be the clerk you want.. http://www.wellfleetma.org/Public_Documents/WellfleetMA_Departments/clerk The town clerk's office is probably the quickest and least expensive way to get the information you want. You did not give dates, but they were married in 1904 with Edla recorded in Barnstable and Jacob in Wellfleet, so death records won't be online. However I have a couple of questions. The marriage information I just mentioned is from an online database at the NEHGS website which has (for a specific span of years) an index of the records at the Massachusetts archives that were sent to the state by the town clerks each year. That information suggests that the town clerks of Wellfleet and Barnstable should be able to help with marriage records. However, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Charles Crocker, I can tell you that in some Barnstable records the marriage is reported as April 19, 1904 "Jacob Hill, 23, of West Barnstable and Edla Kauranen, 20, of Hyannis." The Barnstable town webpage explains that "We are the Town of Barnstable, and we have 7 villages in the town: Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, West Barnstable, and Barnstable." So you may want to go to the Barnstable clerk. My thought, which may not be a very good one, would be that the marriage record information would have been given by young people about facts close in time--that is, who their parents were and where they lived. The death record information will have been given by an informant who is not the subject of the record and may not know or may be too distressed to really care what the information really is. So I would myself try first for the marriage information--those records ask for parents names, although they don't always have them. The question, given the records I quoted, is which clerk to try. The Barnstable town clerk has a very good webpage and even a PDF request form for vital records as well as other contact information. http://www.town.barnstable.ma.us/tob02/depts/AdministrativeServices/Finance/TownClerk/default.asp The town clerk's business is partly to provide information in the public record--they must do that by law--but they are not in the genealogy research business, so they will need all the information you can give them and probably have requirements as to what span of years they will investigate. You might want to specify that you would like all the facts they have, not just a certificate. All my contacts with the clerks in MA have been positive. They have been friendly, prompt and efficient. I hope it's that way for you too.

HOWLAND b. abt. 1903 in Chesterfield, NH Some unconfirmed info: -Erial Sr. possible son of Elkanah HOWLAND & Peninah CHASE of Dennis, MA (the most likely Elkanah Howland is listed as a "convict" on 1860 South Dennis, MA census; Peninah listed as "mother of the above" just below Erial's name in the Alms House in 1880 Dennis census.) There are also some unconfirmed LDS records supporting this lineage. -Erial middle initial possibly stands for "Man" -Florence (ROGERS) HOWLAND may have been a Native American from a Cape Cod tribe or sub-tribe - so far seems likely as she and her family are proving very difficult to locate with any certainty. There is even a rumor that Erial "stole" her off of a "reservation." We have quite a bit of information/evidence for these individuals, but would like more. Especially descendants of any of the above who might have stories/documents/photos, as well as anyone with firm evidence linking Erial Sr. with parents/lineage. *Notes: Both Erial's names are often misspelled in census', directories & other records. Re: Ensial, Emiel, Emuel, Urial, Ariel, etc. Also, it seems pretty clear that Erial Sr. spent most of his life in the Dennis, South Dennis and Dennisport Alms Houses. Guess looking for an old will is out of the question huh? ;-) Thanks in advance to anyone who can help - and sorry this is so long. :^)

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: WETHERELL, SWIFT, PARKER, HAYDEN Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0EB.2ACE/127.2 Message Board Post: Hello, These are not my relatives. Information was found in the 1892 Portrait & Biographical Album of Genesee, Lapeer & Tuscola Counties, Chapman Bros. in Michigan. I hope that it helps someone with their history. Colleen GEORGE S. WETHERELL, of Mundy Township, Genesee County, was born in Easton, Washington County, N.Y., July 13, 1824, and at the age of eight years he removed with his parents too Erie County, where he remained until he was eighteen years old, after which he lived for three years in Genesee County, the same State and then spent three years in Orleans County. His parents were Joseph D. and Laura (SWIFT) WETHERELL, and the father was an hotel keeper in New York and came too Oakland County, Mich., from Orleans County, N.Y., and settled in Oxford, where he died in 1858. The mother lived until July 26, 1891 when she died at the age of four-score and six years. In the fall of 1846 our subject came too Oakland county and here engaged in farming until the spring of 1868, when he removed too Muskegon for one year and then came too Genesee County, and bought the farm where he now lives, a fine tract of one hundred and twenty-four acres which he has put in good condition and where he has erected valuable buildings. He was married in Barre, Orleans County, N.Y., June 9, 1853 to Julia PARKER, a native of Byron, Genesee County, N.Y., where she was born October 13, 1826. Her father Alphonzo PARKER, son of Samuel PARKER, a Revolutionary soldier, was a pioneer of Genesee County, N.Y., and came to Michigan with his wife Harriet SWIFT in the fall of 1867, after which they made their home in Muskegon, where he died, at the age of seventy-nine and Mrs. PARKER when eighty-four years old, in Big Rapids. The two children of Mr. and Mrs. WETHERELL are Laura A., who was the wife of William H. HAYDEN and died December 4, 1888 at the age of thirty-four, and Alphonzo P. who is a merchant in Joliet, Ill. The offices of School Inspector and Township Treasurer have been filled by Mr. WETHERELL and he has taken an active part in political affairs, being a stanch Republican. Mrs. WETHERELL is deeply interested in the temperance movement and is a strong Prohibitionist. They are liberal in their religious views. The family history of Laura SWIFT, the mother of our subject, presents some interesting points. Her father Moses SWIFT, was the son of a captain who served in the army during the French and Indian wars prior too the Revolution, and while on his way home to Massachusetts he was attacked with cholera at Albany and died their , and as his wife had died previous too this event the son Moses was "bound out" too learn the shoemaker's trade. Before he had served his full apprenticeship the war broke out between the colonies and Great Britain, and as he was not old enough too enlist where his age was known, he ran away and entered the army, and was one of the participants in the battle of Bunker Hill. In the battle of Trenton in January, 1777 his right arm was shot off. After his return home he enlisted in the navy and was made Steward of the ship. This young hero had further experiences and hardships as he was taken prisoner when the war was about over and was confined on board the prison ship "Jersey" in New York Harbor and was obliged too subsist on uncooked rats for some time. He possessed $20,000 in Continental money, which he threw into the sea. He lived too be upwards of ninety years old and loved too recount the incident of his military experiences. When a prisoner on the "Jersey" a British officer endeavored too press him into their navy but as he had lost a limb this could not be done. But he was offered an honorable official position if he would come with them and replied: "Sir, you may think your offer an honorable one but I despise it and you. I have shed much blood for my country but am prepared too spill the last drop before I turn against her". The British officer replied, "I honor you, Sir," and no further inducements were offered too lead him too betray the cause he believed too be sacred.

    3. Harlow & all, I couldn't be sure because all I have is the one page, which is pg 155, and at the top of it it says "Barnstable Mass. Vital Records". So you may very well be right, in fact if you found that notation then it must be right. So I guess what I need then is the title page of the "Mayflower Descendant", Vol. 32. By chance does anyone have that, in which they could scan that title page??? Unfortunately it has to be from the book, I don't think it can be from a CD, unIess if you print it out it prints like it was from a book??? I sure would appreciate it.
