Hi, Taking uo the search again for my very illusive Cape Cod ancestors the Batteshalls. So far, the earliest record I have is a marriage record from Eastham 1715 of the marriage of William Batteshall(various spellings surface, even as off the wall as Badisha) and Mary Atwood. In this marriage record, William is listed as being from Truro...which implies he lived there. Are there records for Truro or records which would cover Truro pre-1715? Thanks. These folks are really hard to find, so any help in finding out about them pre-1715 would be a big help. Laura Callier
Hi, Found my Chatham ancestor, William Batteshall, listed in the 1771 MA Tax Valuation list of 1771. Among other things there was listed "4 tons of vessels." I'm pretty sure the Batteshalls were traders and sailed up and down the coast. Is there some way to find out what kind of vessel(s) he owned? Thanks, Laura Callier

Yes he was married to Emma Cook and he lived near his inlaws, that much I was able to discern. I also found him in 1870 in KY in a census. I will keep looking but it is so aggravating not to find anything. Yes I have searched historical painters and articles nothing. Thanks for looking, Pat

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0EB.2ACE/433.2 Message Board Post: As Sandra said, there is no Leroy Crall in the MA VR to 1910 database. Moreover there is no Leroy with a name similar to Crall born in 1847-1849 according to what is recorded in that database. A soundex search for Leroy Crall didn't turn up anyone for a year closer than 1853 and that was a Crowley. A Soundex search for the years 1845 to 1855 for (male) Crall ( in case he was not named at birth) turned up 59 possibilities, none of which looked especially promissing to me. Most were Crowell, a common name especially on Cape Cod, and there were Carrolls, Carles, Curleys, and so on, but nothing that looked to me like a variant of Crall. As Sandra's information suggests, it's hard to find a Crall in Massachusetts in the census or in the vital records. The name is found in PA, where Amos Cook came from. All this leads to the question of what, other than the 1880 census, do you have to indicate he came from Massachusetts. The census is highly unreliable for details such as that. Have you been able to find better information? Have you been able to find anything in probate records, obituaries, and so on that might give names of siblings or other relatives? Could he have been adopted or changed his name? He's listed as a portait painter--could there be anything relating to him in newspapers from the time? Is there a local historical society that might have something on him?

Doug, Merry Christmas and yes! The Probate and Family court clerks office is open in the old village of Barnstable (the court house annex) and there is a computer index of more modern cases and a card catalog of ancient cases. http://www.mass.gov/courts/courtsandjudges/courts/barnprobmain.html Most probate records were saved from the courthouse fire of 18?? We have extracted many of these records in summary and detail form and you can ask to see any of the old papers by case number. The clerks are very helpful. The copy machine is expensive (about 25 cents per page when I was there last) and of course the old documents cannot leave the room! Enjoy reading those old wills, letters of administration, adoptions, inventories, etc. Just downstairs is the Registry of Deeds with all the land records with grantor/grantee indexes, wonderful maps. Most land records burned in the fire and had to be reconstituted after http://www.bcrd.co.barnstable.ma.us/ Regards, Former haunter of the courthouse Ray Sears -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of declair59@netscape.net Sent: Sunday, December 25, 2005 9:18 AM To: MABARNST-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MaBarnstable] accessibility of estate files This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. http://www.kellscraft.com/captainsboston/captainsboston06.html#THACHER H. C. THACHER & CO. The counting-rooms of H. C. Thacher & Co. were at 13 Central Wharf before the days when Fort Hill had been dumped into the sea to form a part of Atlantic Avenue. Many of the boys of Boston used to prowl around this wharf and those near by, to see their fathers' vessels from foreign ports discharge their cargoes. Another interesting event was to see the Yarmouth and Cape Cod packets tie up to their docks, which were directly opposite the office of the Thachers. H. C. Thacher was born at directly opposite on the Cape in 1829, at a time when most of the people of Cape Cod drew their livelihood from the sea. At one time he used to tell his family that he knew over fifty sea-captains who lived along the main street of Yarmouth within a distance of less than two miles. He organized his firm in 1852 and for almost half a century he was engaged in the Mediterranean trade. There is not a Cape Cod family that has not had its sea tragedy as well as its romance, and the Thacher family was no exception. There were two brothers in Yarmouth, called Bartlett and Chandler Thacher. Bartlett was only thirteen years old when he shipped as cabin boy on H. C. Thacher's bark "Mimosa," which plied between Boston and Smyrna and which was captained by a live Yankee skipper named Hall. She was a clipper, and her captain used to crowd on all the sail he could. Bartlett made his first trip to Smyrna and returned safely to Cape Cod and was on the point of sailing on his second trip to the same port. On the very day that he was to leave, his younger brother, Chandler, who was only ten years old, was drowned while playing at the Yarmouth wharf. Word was immediately sent to Bartlett, who was already aboard his vessel at East Boston, to give up sailing, but there was some delay in delivering the message and the "Mimosa" had already put to sea. She made a fast trip to Smyrna and with a large cargo on board started as usual on her homeward voyage. This was her last trip, as neither the vessel nor any of the crew were ever heard of again. The two nephews, Thomas Chandler Thacher and Lewis Bartlett Thacher, who are living in Boston to-day, were named after their uncles, who died so tragically in their youth.
