    3. Hi Wanda: I have seen Samuel Rider's wife Ann's maiden name given as Gamlett, but haven't seen any source for where that came from and most of what I read says her maiden name is unknown. Have you found anything that makes Gamlett her probable maiden name? Chris Chirokas -----Original Message----- From: Wanda [mailto:aligator@pivot.net] Sent: Monday, March 20, 2006 8:55 AM To: MABARNST-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MaBarnstable] Rider and Gamlett and Howland and Young Has anyone ever found anything on Anne Gamlett that married Samuel Rider Sr.? They came from England between 1/7/1638-39 and for all who keep adding Hester Hall to their son John as his wife, she married John’s son born about 1664. John son of Samuel and Anne was born England 1636. Samuel and Anne’s son Zachariah Rider is as recorded the first birth and death according to Yarmouth Records. My next question is about Abigail daughter of Henry Howland and Mary, how can she be born here when she was born between 1628-29 when her parents didn’t arrive till 1632? -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0EB.2ACE/442.2 Message Board Post: A quick look at the census and some Massachusetts vital records suggests that there were very few Montcalms in the US in the early nineteenth century, and a people search suggests that there are very few even now. I found 76 listings in the US now. At least one was in Barnstable County, and perhaps a letter to that person might bring an answer to all your questions. There were more men named Anthony Montcalm than one in the 1800s. There was a father and son, both named Anthony W. (William I think) in Middlesex County, and an Anthony in Barnstable County. The Anthony in Barnstable County married a Naomi Phillips in 1850 and was the son of Moses and Nancy according to the death record at the state archives. Death records rely on an informant, though, and the informant may not know details such as the names of parents, so perhaps it's not Nancy. The death record says Moses was born in Nantucket. The Nantucket VR has some mentions of a Moses, but it's all a little vague. At least one wife was named Sarah/Sally and Moses is callled "2nd" at one point. The Anthony W. in Middlesex is listed as born in CT and the 1790 census has as the only Montcalm (spelled that way--I didn't try variants) a "Mosses" in New Haven, CT. Perhaps there's a hint in all that that might help. I have no idea where they all came from. The Marquis did have two sons who survived childhood, but I couldn't find a genealogy that would tell me what became of them, although I didn't look very hard. If I were looking I think I'd try writing to the Montcalm on the Cape. There appear to be so few of that name in the US that I'd think the odds would favor that person's being a descendant.

    3. Carol, I don't have any information about your John Eldridge, but going at this in a round-about way ... do you know any more about Mary Ann Chadwick? I have a lot of Chadwicks from Barnstable County, and perhaps we can find more about John by looking at Mary Ann's line. Do you know who her first husband was, or her parents? Or perhaps her approximate date of birth? Did she remain in Lyme after her marriage to Amos Huntley? John may have known Mary Ann by a connection with her potential Barnstable County Chadwick cousins. Have you found her death record by chance? 3. Hello List: Isn't there anyone out there who descends from a John Eldredge/Eldridge born in Chatham between 1800-1810? John is my gggreatgrandfather and I have been trying to tumble this brick wall for so long now I am getting discouraged. All I know about John is what the marriage entry from Lyme CT tells me. John Eldridge married in January 25, 1838 to Mary Ann Chadwick. She was from Lyme and John is from Chatham. No birth dates given. I find this couple later in the 1840 census of Lyme and they have a male child under five which would be my great-grandfather John. They also had a daughter born in 1841. I find her in many census records but the problem with our family is that most of the men were named John and the girls were Eliza J or Elizabeth. The marriage between John and Mary Ann was dissolved in 1851 by divorce. He apparently left her around 1843. She married Amos Huntley after her divorce was granted in 1851. He was her third marriage. Where can one find voting records or perhaps tax records to see if John voted or paid taxes. I think he may have gone back to Chatham but do not know. Stefanie asked this question off-list, but I decided to answer it on-list as it is asked from time to time by those new to Massachusetts genealogical research. The "Tan Books," also known as the "Official Series," are a set of birth, marriage and death records volumes for about 200 of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. Each volume transcribes vital records for the town or city from its founding through about 1850. Supplementing the town or city clerk's records are church records, gravestone transcriptions, and vital records from private records such as minister's or grave-digger's records, Bibles and diaries. They were published between 1900 and WWII under a project initiated by NEHGS and later joined by other organizations such as the Essex Institute and the Topsfield Historical Society. The Commonwealth agreed to purchase a set for every municipality in the state. They are called "Tan Books" because of the uniform color of their binding. They can also be found in some large genealogical collections outside of the state - the genealogical room at the North Carolina Archives, for example, has a set. Dale H. 3. The Adams Genealogies (1898 and 1987) both give this date. In Henry E. Scott Jr.'s book, _The Adams Family of Martha's Vineyard_, (pub.1987 by Mercury Publishing, Rutland VT, in cooperation with the NEHGS,) says, pp. 1-2, (all of the following I quote verbatim, the bracketed remarks are the author's): Eliashib Adams met Experience Mayhew's daughter Reliance (Experience's first child, born 1696), and married her 15 Feb 1728-29 when she was thirty-three years old. At this time Experience sold his son-in-law the parcel of land on which Eliashib had built his house. The deed (Book 5, p. 154 in Dukes County registry, dated Dec. 19, 1729) states that "I, Experience Mayhew ... for 70 pounds in Good and Lawful Money of New England ... give ... unto Eliashib Adams, his heirs ... a Certain Tract or Parcell of Land Situate ... in the Town of Chilmark ... where ye said Adams New Dwelling House Standeth and Butted and Bounded as followeth..." It included "a meadow and the SW part of a littlie island in ye Pond (Chilmark or Black Point) at a Place called Quansoo (at the western end of Tisbury Great Pond) ... which leads to the beach". The parcel was very close to the Tisbury-Chilmark boundary as it was located at that time. Experience's house was hardly a mile away a Quenames. Experience must have realized that Reliance was nearly ready to give birth to her first baby, her only child, born three days later, on 22 December 1729. They named him Mayhew Adams. But Reliance, being over 30 years old, did not survive the ordeal. She died seventeen days later. There is much more in the book, but no specific citation to the marriage date. Hope this helps some.
