I've "rescued" two old photographs one identified as Chloe EMERY, Grandmother of Beryl HAGAN. The photograph was taken at the Elmer Chickering Studio in Boston, Massachusetts. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Chloe likely in her 40's or 50's at the time it was taken. The second photograph is unidentified, a young woman probably in her 20's at the time it was taken. The second photograph was taken at the J. Havard & Sons Studio in New Bedford, MA. This photograph was probably also taken in the 1880's or 1890's and looks to be a relative of Chloe EMERY pictured in the first photograph. Based on limited research and the help of an EMERY Family researcher I was able to locate Chloe EMERY in the 1880 census living with James A. & Ada F. HAGAN in Boston. Census information for the family is as follows: James A. HAGAN, age 32, born MA, Works in a Hat Shop, parents born Ireland/Nova Scotia Ada F. HAGAN, wife, age 25, born ME, Keeping House, parents born ME Lena E. HAGAN, dau, age 1, born MA Chloe EMERY, Mother-in-law, age 50, born ME, parents born ME (listed as married) Thanks to the EMERY Family researcher I know that Ada was Chloe's daughter and with the couple appears to have had at least four children, Lena, a second child died young, Beryl E. HAGAN, and Edith E. HAGAN. Beryl appears to have never married and record of Edith marrying has not been located. The family is record in the 1900 census living in Chelsea, MA with records as follows: Alexander HAGAN, age 52, born Sept 1848, married 23 years, born MA, parents born Ireland/Nova Scotia, a Barber Ada F. HAGAN, wife, age 44, born Nov 1855, married 23 years, 4 children/2 living, born ME, parents born ME Cloe EMERY, Mother-in-law, age 70, born Feb 1830, widow, born ME, parents born ME Beryl E. HAGAN, dau, age 8, born Nov 1891, born MA, at School Edith E. HAGAN, dau, age 7, born Jan 1893, born MA, at School In 1910 the HAGAN Family is living in Somerville, MA with census records providing the following information: Alexander HAGAN, age 62, married 34 years, born MA, parents born Ireland/Canada, a Hatter in Hat Factory Ada HAGAN, wife, age 55, married 34 years, 5 children/2 living, born ME, parents born ME Beryl HAGAN, dau, age 18, born MA, a Bookkeeper at feed company Edith HAGAN, dau, age 16, born MA I did find record that Beryl E. HAGAN b. 23 Nov 1891 died in Centerville, MA on 21 Feb 1989. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of their family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

I am looking for Thomas Kennedy and Polly Ward and their families. Thomas Ward is listed in the 1820 census in Wellfleet and in 1830 Thomas isnt there but his wife Polly is. I believe they are the parents of my ggg-grandmother Ruth S. Kennedy Daniels. I know absolutely NOTHING about Thomas Kennedy but all my research so far leads me to believe that Polly is the daughter of Elisha and Thankful Smith Ward. Elisha Ward fought in the Revolutionary War and I know all about him and I know he has a daughter Polly and all roads I have taken lead me back to Elisha. Can anyone help tie in Elisha's daughter Polly to Thomas Kennedy. I do have proof that Thomas Kennedy and a Polly Ward are Ruths parents but nothing proving, or disproving, that Elisha is the father of my Polly or anything at all on Thomas Kennedy. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!
I am a also descendent of John Lothrop. Could you give me more information on this book? Thanks Smiles Darlene
One valuable source of Cape genealogy information are annual town reports. Janet and the Harwich Hist Soc have started a valuable project which brings the data in these reports to the web. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mabarnst/vitalrecords/vrindex.html Please help us by transcribing Town Reports Vital Records in your library or town hall and sending them to Janet or me for inclusion on the website. His marriage to my grandmother in January of 1838, states he is from Chatham MA. She was from Lyme CT and the marriage was performed by the Justice of the Peace in Lyme CT. This is from the Lyme Vital Records Book of Marriage. I was recently at the Connecticut State Library and found a short newspaper article on this marriage which stated "Dr. John F. Eldridge of Chatham MA married Mary Ann Chadwick from Lyme CT on January 28, 1838 by Justice of the Peace, Joshua Warren." The article came from the New Haven Literary Emporium and is dated February 6, 1838. This couple divorced in 1851. There were two children born to this union, a son named John born about 1839 and a daughter named Eliza born about 1841. John left the marriage about 1842 and the His wife filed for divorce in 1851. We have several John F's in our line. Seems that each son was named John. I cannot find a John F. Eldridge practicing medicine in Chatham MA or Lyme CT. I was always under the assumption that this grandfather was a mariner but the 1840 census unfortunately does not give much information. I have not been able to locate him after that. I have found the children and all their death records state that their father was from Chatham MA. Mary Ann married in 1851 to a Mr. Amos Huntley from Lyme CT, but she died in 1859. Getting back to the newspaper article, Could this possibly be a "typo" and that Dr. should have been "Mr." or could there have been a legitimate Dr. in the family that we don't know about? Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated. I have been looking for this man for so many years. I can't trace our line back past him as I don't have an actual date of birth other than what the 1840 Lyme CT census states. Thanks again for all your help. Sincerely, Carol in MN

Hi Everyone: For people with KELLEY, CHASE, BAKER, and HOWES (and more) ancestry, there is an interesting article published in the March 2006 issue of Nat'l Genealogical Society Quarterly. The article is written by Kathleen Flynn, who did extensive research on the mistaken racial identity of Emma Dunham (KELLEY) HAWKINS. Emma Dunham KELLEY was born in Dennis 11 Nov 1863 to Isaac Dunham KELLEY and Gabrelia CHASE. Her father died at sea before she was born. Issac was the son of Hiram KELLEY and Abagail HOWES of West Dennis (Isaac was brother to my gg grandfather David Howes KKLLEY). Gabrelia was the daughter of Warren CHASE and Emeline BAKER of South Dennis. Emma wrote two books of fiction in the 1800s and somehow was identified as African American and her books have been re-published in the Schomburg Library of 19th Century Black Women Writers. It seems that the conclusion on her race is from a photograph of her printed in one of her books. Dr. Flynn has worked for several years in compiling evidence on who Emma was and that she was in fact a white woman and it is a very interesting story. Although Emma's books were fiction ("Megda" and "Four Girls at Cottage City"), the latter includes some biographical information including the tragic death of her father and other family members on the same ship. Emma lived a life of significant hardship, as many of our Cape ancestors did. Her photograph graces the cover of NGSQ and a very small copy of the picture is on the NGSQ website: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/index.cfm. Chris Chirokas

They had 3 daughters 1882-1886 all named Berry. So, I'm not sure if his death info would be under Wixon or Berry. I believe he died between 1885-1892. He was a mariner so it is possible he went down with his ship. Please help me. His death date is my brickwall. Thanks, Meghan

The 1920 census says that his middle initial was L. but that could be an error by the census taker. I think the record also said he was born in Mass. But again, ages can be wrong in census records. So your option could be a possibility. Thanks, Dale. Jean.
