I sent out an SOS yesterday asking what W.S. meant when used for the place of birth. You have all been so wonderful. I contacted Mary and she is in the process of moving and is having trouble finding the census this was on. But she sent me what she could find and I am copying it to this email. If she finds the census she will send it to me. I hope this helps. God Bless Char [email protected] Mary's email follows: Doggone it anyway. I am moving, and stuff is packed. I am frantically searching for that ONE paper. I am so disorganized. This is what I have found so far. (I can't find the original paper, but I will eventually.) My husband died in 2001, and this is his family. Paskel Conrad Barfield (He went by Conrad) Father:Edward Barfield b.1881 in Ohio Mother:Florence Ware b.1883 in MO. Grandfather: William Barfield b.1846 in Ohio Grandmother Anna Millward b.circa 1858 Gr. Grandmother Hannah Millward b.1823 W.S. (another census says N.Y.)She died in Saint Louis,MO. in 1892. Her death Cert is spelled "Millard" which is incorrect. She is buried in Bethany Cemetery in Saint Louis MO. No grave marker. No Sexton. Gr.Grandfather William Barfield b.1823 in Miss. I have another question. On a Baptismal Cert. another of Conrad's grandmothers was a witness at the Baptism of the children. Her name was Ellen Dora (Harris) Ware. She said that she was born on 1854 in Owasco Sullivan Co.Missouri. I can't find "Owasco" anywhere, let alone Missouri. I will diligently look for the census that I need and let you all know. Thanks for your patience.
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0EB.2ACE/330.1.2.1.2 Message Board Post: Unfortunately, this may just add to the confusion regarding the Nathaniel Finney/Phinney who married Thankful Tupper, but I'm also running into conflicts with the Nathaniel Finney that I'm descended from. My ancestor was Nathaniel Finney, son of John Finney and Ann Toogood, who was born on 08 Jan 1720 at Swansea, Bristol Co., Mass. [1] [5]. He married Hannah Wood on 03 Sep 1740 at Swansea, Bristol Co., Mass. [1]. Hannah died in 1756. Nathaniel, widowed, and at least three of his children moved to Sackville, Nova Scotia (now part of New Brunswick) about 1761. It appears that Nathaniel married a second time (it's suspected that his second wife was the widowed Judith Towers nee Briggs) and they had a daughter named Molly who was born on 07 Apr 1763. Information on Molly is recorded in the Sackville Township Book. The 1770 census for Sackville lists the household of Nathaniel as having 1 man, 1 women and 2 girls. He may have also been the Nathaniel Finney listed in the Jan 1803 listing of inhabitants of Sackville. Nathaniel's descendants had spread out to other parts of New Brunswick and Maine. According to Howard Finney's "Finney-Phinney Families in America" (1957), Nath! aniel died on 24 Sep 1809 in Machias, Maine, at the age of 88. I'm curious the source of the death information and if it specifically indicated his age and possibly other relationships (i.e. wife or parents). Howard Finney's book indicates that this was the Nathaniel Finney who had married Thankful Tupper, but this appears to be in conflict with the Sackville records. Thankful Tupper, daughter of Samuel Tupper and Hannah Fish, married a Nathaniel Finney, on 13 Jan 1763 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., Mass. [1] [4]. The "Vital Records of Sandwich" lists this marriage as well as the birth of two sons: Nathaniel on 11 Jul 1765 and Josiah on 01 Sep 1767. Both sons survived childhood and later married, but are not counted in the 1770 Sackville household. This, as well as Molly being absent from the Sandwich records, is why I feel that we are dealing with two separate Nathaniel Finneys. It's my understanding that the family of Nathaniel and Thankful moved to Maine about 1769 and are listed in the 1790 census for Machias. I also do not think that this was the same Nathaniel who married Abigail Hatch. I show Nathaniel Phinney, son [1] of Samuel Phinney and Hannah Ray, being born on 10 Dec 1733 at Barnstable, Barnstable Co., Mass. [1] [2]. This Nathaniel married Abigail Hatch, daughter of Ebenezer Hatch and Hannah Davis, on 18 Dec 1758 at Falmouth, Barnstable Co., Mass. [1] [3]. The family of Nathaniel and Abigail appears to carried on with a number of children. It's my guess that the Nathaniel who married Thankful Tupper was the son of Joshua Finney and Hannah Curtis. Their son Nathaniel was born about 1732 at Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Mass., and was baptized on 11 Apr 1736 [1]. Hannah Curtis had remarried Jirah Fish on 28 Jul 1745 at Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Mass. [4]. Jirah, Thankful's uncle, and Hannah, Nathaniel's mother, had moved to Sandwich. Further, this Nathaniel had a brother named Francis who had married Anne Tobey on 30 May 1764 at Sandwich, Barnstable, Co., Mass. The Tobey family name seems to come up again with the family of Nathaniel and Thankful, so it appears that members of the Tobey family also left Sandwich and moved on to Machais. The following children of Nathaniel and Thankful had married into the Tobey family: Nathaniel Jr.'s second wife, Permelia?, was the widow of Matthias Tobey; Jirah married Rebecca Tobey; Hannah married Elisha Tobey; and Alvin married Temperance Tobey. All these Tobeys were children of Matthias Tobey and Hannah Nye. I found much of this information at the PhinneysPlace website (although I've interpreted things differently) and this site included the following citations: [1] Howard Finney, "Finney-Phinney Families in America; Descendants of John Finney of Plymouth and Barnstable, Mass., and Bristol, of Samuel Finney of Philadelphia, Pa., and of Robert Finney of New London, Pa.". [2] Robert J. Dunkle (Transcriber), "Records of Barnstable, Massachusetts". [3] Oliver B. Brow, "Vital Records of Falmouth, Massachusetts to the year 1850". [4] Caroline Lewis and Russell A Lovell Kardell, "Vital Records of Sandwich, Massachusetts to 1885". [5] H.L. Peter Rounds, "Vital Records of Swansea, Massachusetts to the year 1850", 1992 Not sure if this helps or confuses things more, but would like any comments. Regards, Neil
I am hoping someone could help me help a fellow genealogy searcher. I have copied the email she sent me. Hopefully someone knows what W.S. stands for, if not any suggestions? I was wondering if you could help me with a problem on my husband's side. His grandmother, according to the census takers, was born in W.S. I thought maybe Wisconsin, but no. Do you have any idea of what W.S. could be? Thanks. Char [email protected]

As you well know, spam has become a significant problem in recent years. Because of that I have used a "disposable" email address which is posted on my web sites. Unfortunately, when I set up my personal genealogical pages they were tied to that "disposable" address. That address is now attracting hundreds of spam emails per day, and I have had to deactivate it and replace it with another address. This means that my personal genealogical pages, including my Packard and Washburn pages, have had to move to a different address. The entry point for all of my genealogical pages, both personal and for the USGenWeb Project, is now: http://members.cox.net/plymouthcolony/index.shtml Please change your bookmarks to reflect the new address. Any bookmarks with "members.cox.net/oldcolony" in their address can be changed to "members.cox.net/plymouthcolony" to point them to the new pages. Dale H. Janet Griffin recently mentioned the GenWeb project to transcribe town VRs from the annual reports. I've extended the Wellfleet files, so the years 1888-1905 are done. So far, there are significant sections of Barnstable, Harwich and Wellfleet done - the index URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~mabarnst/vitalrecords/vrindex.html. I encourage everyone to contribute - the transcription is easy, and the Harwich tables can just be copied, and modified if necessary. The reports I used were readily available at the Wellfleet Library, and Town Hall also has a full set, so I hope the other towns are as helpful. -- Sincerely, David Kew
MASSACHUSETTS GENEALOGICAL COUNCIL (MGC) P.O. Box 5393 Cochituate, MA 01778 www.massgencouncil.org ALERT ALERT ALERT MGC urges all genealogists who care about access to vital records to act now! Legislative bills (H-3642, H-3643, and H-3644, petitioned by Plymouth Rep. Thomas J. O’Brien, et al.), currently pending in the Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee, are being pushed for passage within two weeks. They will close public records that have been open for nearly 400 years as well as the indexes to them. We all must contact our Massachusetts state Representatives and Senators to oppose these three (O’Brien) bills for the following reasons: The bills call for restricting access to all birth records since 1915 and all marriage and death records since 1955. These records are currently open public records and are the entry point for genealogical and medical history research. Restricting public access to the indexes of these records is unprecedented. It will deny use by all non-governmental individuals: researchers in genealogy, medical history, probate heirs, banks, journalists, and historians. Contact should be made immediately. We stopped these bills in 2003 – but now support for them in the legislature is formidable. If YOU don’t speak now, these bills will change the face of genealogy in Massachusetts and beyond. MOST EFFECTIVE: a signed letter with your reasons for opposing these closures, using your own words. To view a sample letter for your legislators, click here http://home.comcast.net/~massgencouncil/ConstituentLetter.htm ALSO: telephone calls, face to face meetings, and e-mails. SHARE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT: urge your sympathetic relatives, friends, neighbors, and the professionals listed above to do the same.
