I purchased a copy of the "Storrs Family in America' written byCharles Storrs in 1886. He actually passed away in 1884 but the book was printed in 1886. He actually went to England to research the ancestors. It is a most informative and interesting book. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Elijah and Catherine's children were all born in Bucks County, PA also, so I don't think this Elijah was the owner of Greg's house. However, there were two other Elijah's.. one died 1753 amd the other born 1769 d. 1866 in Harwich. Possibly one of them could have owned that house? Author: lylelady66 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.barnstable/347.4.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Greg, Elijah Doane was born on April 3, 1694, in Cape Cod, and died September 21, 1736. He was the son of Daniel Doane, grandson of Deacon Daniel Doane, and great-grandson of Deacon John Doane. Elijah and wife Catherine bore six children: Ann, Mary, Rebecca, Joanna, Titus, and Catherine. There is another Elijah Doane, born 1817, in Pennsylvania, but according to my lineage, this sector of Doane's never left the Pennsylvania area, therefore not owning property on Cape Cod. Can you determine an age of your home? I would think his store was used for salt, as the Doane's were mariners and fishing was the number one commodity. I think this may be your Elijah, but again it can be determined by your home's age. Sincerely, Joanne Doane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: GregCraig1 Surnames: Doane Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.counties.barnstable/347.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sue: The only info I have is from the Provincetown historic survey that identified "floater" houses. It says the house is circa 1800-1830 however local experts say it might be slightly older than that. It was originally built on Long Point which is the absolute end of Cape Cod and across the harbor from Provincetown itself. This was a settlement of about 60 houses/windmills/cod and salt drying operations. The house was located in the middle of Long Point and the store on the water. Sometime after 1850 the house and store were literally floated across the harbor and then installed on Nickerson Street in Provincetown's west end. I have no idea what type of store but likely something to do with supplying the Long Point settlement. Any info is greatly appreciated.
