Descendants of Joseph CHILSON 1. JOSEPH4 CHILSON (JOHN3, WALSINGHAM2, WILLIAM1 CHILSON/CHILSTON) was born August 1670 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts (Source: (1) NEHGR, Vol. 5, (1851), pg 95, "Genealogical Items Relative to Lynn, MA"Born the later end of August 1670., (2) Essex Inst., Vital Records of Lynn, MA, to 1849, (1905), Says he was born "latter end" of August 1670, info. taken from Essex Co. Quarterly Court.), and died Bef. 13 May 1740 in Uxbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: Worcester Co., MA, Probate Records.). He married (1) HEPSIBAH UNKNOWN Bef. 1703 in perhaps Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts. She was born Unknown, and died Bef. 1718. He married (2) SARAH UNKNOWN 4 June 1718 in Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Mendon, MA, Vital Records to 1850, (1920), page 267 and 429.). She was born Abt. 1680, and died Aft. 1740 in Probably Uxbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: She was still living in Uxbridge when her husband died and for a time thereafter.). Notes for JOSEPH CHILSON: Beriah and Jeremiah were previously assigned to the second wife, but in looking at the records we have, I believe they were born before 1718 and were, therefore, children of Hepsibah, not Sarah. For instance, they did not require guardians when Joseph died in 1740. Surely, Beriah, who was married in 1736, was born by 1716 and Jeremiah, who was m. in 1730, was born by 1710. In 1711 and 1712, Joseph Chilson was an appraiser on two different estates in Providence, RI. So he must have been living there at that time. These were the estates of Alexander Bolkom (co-appraiser William Sprague, Jr.) and Benoni Woolley (co-appraisers James Bick and Ebenezer Cooke). "September ye 11th 1730 -- Joseph Chelson Gaue Notis that he had taken up a stray Mear and Coult..." (Prov. Town Records) It is unclear which Joseph Chilson this is. Mendon Proprietors' Records show land transactions for Joseph Chilson in the following years: 1722, 1725, 1729, 1731, 1735, and 1737. I believe last two may belong to the Joseph Chilson who later lived in Smithfield, RI. He died intestate. Here is a summary of his probate file: 13 May 1740--wife Sarah was made administrator of his estate. 18 July 1740--Sarah was replaced as administrator by son Jeremiah because she declined to serve. Jeremiah was of Smithfield at the time. David White, was appointed as guardian of the two minor children, Benjamin and Hepsibah. He was a resident of New Sherborn (now Douglas) at the time. It appears that the estate was settled in 1741. The only children named anywhere in the documents were Jeremiah, Beriah, Benjamin and Hepsibah. ELIZABETH UNKNOWN, Abt. 1730; b. Unknown; d. Aft. 22 February 1760, probably Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island (Source: Worcester Co., MA, Registry of Deeds, Signed away dower rights on her deceased husband's property on this date.). Notes for JEREMIAH CHILSON, SR.: It appears, from studying the land records, that he took over his father's mill in Uxbridge after his father's death. He sold the bulk of his father's property, on which his step-mother was living, in 1748. I wonder if Sarah Chilson died then? Or did she go to live with one of her children? BERIAH CHILSON, MY ANCESTOR, b. Bef. 1716, probably Providence Co., RI, or Worcester Co., MA; d. 24 May 1755, Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts (Source: (1) Taken from Judd Manuscript, Northampton Church Records, 1661-1846., (2) Collected and continued by James Edward Buckman, Northampton, MA, Deaths from Town and Church Records, 1653-1884, I have a photocopy of this record.); m. Boston, 1916), page 228 and 250, says 7 Apr 1736.); b. 5 June 1716, Medway, Suffolk, Massachusetts (Source: (1) Eva Garnsey Card and Howard Abram Guernsey, The Garnsey-Guernsey Genealogy, (Orig. Publ. 1963, I used Second Edition 1979 (Young-Thayer)), page 107., (2) Vital Records of Medway, MA, to the Year 1850, (NEHGS, 1905), page 64.); d. Unknown. Notes for BERIAH CHILSON: Based on his marriage date, I have estimated that he was born before 1716. This would make him a child of Hepsibah, NOT Sarah. The History of Buckland says: "In an old deed, dated 29 Feb 1760, James Wood of Uxbridge buys land in Buckland of Edmund Rawson of Uxbridge, "land in Huntstown" (now Ashfield), which I (Rawson) purchased of Beriah Chilson at that time (when?) of Uxbridge." Perhaps the children who do not show up in the birth records in Uxbridge were born in "Huntstown"? I do not find any records for Beriah or any of his family in Northampton prior to his death in 1755. There was an Indian uprising in the area around "Huntstown" about the time of his death. I'm wondering if he was living in there and was killed by Indians -- and then his family fled to Northampton for safety, bringing him along for burial -- or maybe he was still alive, but injured, and then died in Northampton? This would explain the absence of records and it would explain why his wife was warned out of Northampton after his death. I think a thorough search of Ashfield and Buckland land records is in order. I have already looked at Vital Records and found nothing. Northampton Marriage records show a Susanna "Gilson" m. William Judd in 1759. Could she be another child of Beriah? Or was there a Gilson family in the area too. I need to check this out. Also, in these records was a Submit CHILSON who m. Paul Clark in 1784. Who is she? More About BERIAH CHILSON: Fact 2: 1736, Living in Uxbridge by this date, probably earlier. Fact 3: 1746, Land owner in Huntstown, MA (became Ashfield) (Source: Judd Manuscript of Northampton Genealogies.) Fact 4: Bef. 1755, May have moved to Northampton, as his death is recorded there. Religion: 7 October 1737, Baptized and admitted to Uxbridge First Church (Congrgational). (Source: Uxbridge First Church Records.) Notes for PATIENCE GARNSEY: I have been told that she m. KNIGHT shortly after Beriah died, and she m. Thomas PORTER in 1773. The Northampton records show Rebekah (not Patience) CHILSON m. ______KNIGHT 6 Oct 1757. She was warned out of Northampton as Patience Chilson in 1758 -- so was probably not remarried in 1757. I found no record of her marriage to Thomas PORTER in Northampton or Southampton. Thomas Porter and his family lived in Southampton for years but I find no trace of Patience or any of her family there. Nor do I find any evidence that Thomas Porter's first wife died early. At this point, I have serious doubts about her remarriage to either of these men. She must have moved out of Northampton. Her death is not recorded there. More About PATIENCE GARNSEY: Fact 1: 1758, She and her daughter Patience were warned out of Northampton. (Source: Records of Pat Lundy of Troy, Michigan.) Religion: 15 January 1737/38, Dismissed from Rehoboth Church, admitted to Uxbridge Church. (Source: Uxbridge First Church Records.) Marriage Notes for BERIAH CHILSON and PATIENCE GARNSEY: I have listed the probable date of their marriage--but the sources do not agree. Holbrook Series says Intention filed 24 Apr 1736. This same source says they were married 7 Apr, year unclear but listed among some 1735 marriages --obviously out of place if intention was filed in 1736. Uxbridge VR to 1850 says intention filed 7 Apr 1736. Uxbridge Church records show them as a married couple by 15 Jan 1737/8, when Patience transferred from the church in Rehoboth and shows their first child bapt. 16 Apr 1738. Since the year was unclear in the marriage records of the town, but very clear in the intention records, I'm using that date, but one of the other dates above could be correct. More About BERIAH CHILSON and PATIENCE GARNSEY: Marriage Fact: by William Arnold of Smithfield, J.P. Children of JOSEPH CHILSON and SARAH UNKNOWN are: vi. HEPSIBAH5 CHILSON, b. 8 October 1720, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 47, Says parents William and Sarah, but I believe it is an error. Other evidence shows her to be a dau. of Joseph and Sarah.); d. Unknown; m. Bef. 18 November 1753, Killingly, Windham, Connecticut (Source: Breakneck Hill (2nd Congregational) Church Records, Killingly, CT, (Located at Killingly, CT, Historical Society), His wife is listed as a widow on this date.); m. SARAH WATERS, Bef. 1745; b. 16 June 1720, Killingly, Windham, Connecticut (Source: Killingly, CT, Town Hall, BMD Index, Book 1, page 18.); d. Aft. 1775, probably Killingly, Windham, Connecticut (Source: Killingly, CT, Land Records, Book 10, page 115, Still living in 1775 and named in a land record of her son Waters.). Notes for BENJAMIN CHILSON, SR.: David White was appointed his guardian when his father died while he was still a minor. (1740) On 18 Nov 1753, his 5 children were baptized in the Breakneck Congregational Church in Killingly, CT. They are listed as children of "William" and Sarah in NEHGR, Vol. 66; this is an error in transcription. Records of the Killingly, CT, Historical Society show that they were children of WIDOW Sarah Chilson (not William and Sarah). Therefore, we know that Benjamin Chilson died before this date. His sons were disposing of property in Killingly, CT, given to them by their mother, wife of Isaac Cleveland, in 1775. More About BENJAMIN CHILSON, SR.: Fact 1: 13 April 1747, Purchased land in Killingly, CT, from his father-in-law, Daniel Waters. (Source: Killingly, CT, Land Records.)
