    3. Bob, That is very interesting. I have several other ancestral families who did that, notably BLOODS, later on, moving clear across the continent eventually. What is "water farm"? Is it on a river, or where did that name come from? 3. Betty: I have been tracking Ben through his land holdings since he came to New England. He had land in Weymouth, 3 4 acre house lots, then "Waterfarm" in Braintree. He then aquired land in Medfield and lived at 3 locations there. Mendon was next with the Mill site and the house lot and the meadow grant. Swansea was his next conquest leaving his mendon holdings to son James. Anyway, here is my line down to me -- preobablyt a lot more than you want.If you can shae with me what you have on Benjamin, I'd appreciate it. Someone wrote tro me a few years back, and had a lot of stuff on him in Mendon, but that see,s to be lost. also. Betty Sullivan Descendants of Hannah ALBEE Generation No. 1 1. Hannah1 ALBEE was born 16 August 1641 in Braintree, MA1,2, and died 24 April 1723 in Medfield, MA3. She married Samuel WIGHT4 25 March 1663 in Medfield, MA5,6, son of Deacon WIGHT and Alice ROUNDY. He was born 05 February 1639/40 in Dedham, MA7, and died 21 December 1716 in Medfield, MA8. Notes for Samuel WIGHT: Samuel and Hanah lived at Medfield, MA. He and his brother, Thomas, both suffered great losses during King Phillip's War and applied to the General court in 1678 for relief. (Source: "Genealogical Dictionary", Vol. 4, p. 543). He was the earliest WIGHT mentioned in the Dedham records - his birth. At age 20, in 1650, he moved to Medfield with his father. In the Medfield History it tells us that he and three others were hired to burn part of the woods, much as the Indians sis, to keep down weeds. He was made a Freeman 8 OCT 1672. He was settled in the north part of the town by 1673, and that year he was chosen to be Constable. His name appears in the list of Medfield proprietors in 1675. Samuel' and Hannah's home was burned during King Phillip's War, but was rebuilt in the same spot, on the west side of North St. Because of his losses in the war, he was forgiven his subscription of one bushel of corn to the new college at Cambridge was forgiven. He also petitioned for forgiveness from his taxes, and the court granted this request. Apparently he then moved on to Dedham. His name appears in the early tax payers list. He ans his wife were members of the Medfield church in 1697. And he was a proprietor of the "black swamp" Medway in 1702, according to the History of Medway. Both Samuel and Hannah died at Medfield. (Wight, Wm. Ward, "The Wights", Swain & Tate, Milwaukee, 1890, Reprinted 1980). Children of Hannah ALBEE and Samuel WIGHT are: 2 i. Hannah2 WIGHT, born 25 March 16649. 3 ii. Samuel WIGHT, born 11 November 166410. + 4 iii. Hannah WIGHT, born 04 February 1667/68 in Medfield, MA; died 24 November 1759 in Bellingham, MA. 5 iv. John WIGHT, born 22 May 167010. 6 v. Joseph WIGHT, born 07 September 1675 in Medfield, MA11; died 25 October 1758 in Bellingham, MA12. He married Martha(THOMSON) THAYER 15 February 1724/25 in Boston, MA13; born 28 August 167514; died 14 October 1759 in Bellingham, MA14. 10 ix. Jonathon WIGHT, born 11 September 168215. Generation No. 2 4. Hannah2 WIGHT (Hannah1 ALBEE)16 was born 04 February 1667/68 in Medfield, MA17, and died 24 November 1759 in Bellingham, MA. She married John THOMSON Abt. 1689 in Mendon, MA, son of John THOMSON and Thankful WOODLAND. He was born 25 December 1667 in Mendon, MA, and died 06 March 1748/49 in Bellingham, MA. Notes for John THOMSON: On 5 MAR 1711, he, along with John Corbit and others were permitted to build a saw mill on the town's common, "on Second Bridge (Charles) River, " below the Dedham Tree. This tree was on a bend of the Charles River, a little north of the house of Ellis Bullard in Bellingham. The sawmill was on the north bank of Charles River, a short distance to the northwest from the Bellingham Station on the Air Line Railroad. John received land in the sixth division, 22 DEC 1713. On 23 NOV of that year, he was paid for sweeping out the meeting house. On 4 MAR 1617, he became a Selectman. He was then Sgt. John THOMSON. On 24 JAN 1718, John , now Ensign, was chosen part of a committee to take care of the town's records. John received land in the seventh division of land in 1719. As one of the signers of the petition to make part of Mendon into Bellingham, in 1719, he and John Darling and John Marsh were empowered to call the first town meeting anytime the following March. The town was named Bellingham, after Go. Bellingham, and Mendon protested, but to no avail. A 30 x35 foot church was raised 20 MAR 1744 at Bellingham, for the Baptist congregation. At first, they had no settled minister, until 1650, when Elnathan WIGHT, one of John's mother's cousins, was ordained and accepted as their first minister. At that time, Baptist members were still being arrested for not supporting the congregational churches (Puritans). John3 THOMSON, Jr. (Hannah2 WIGHT, Hannah1 ALBEE) was born 28 December 1689 in Mendon, MA, and died 18 September 1739 in Mendon, MA. He married (1) Abigail WHITE18 31 March 1712 in Mendon, MA19. She was born 13 July 1685 in Mendon, MA20, and died Bef. 1715 in Mendon, MA20. He married (2) Abigail THAYER 22 March 1719/20 in Mendon, MA21, daughter of Thomas THAYER and Abigail VEASEY. She was born 03 September 1701 in Braintree, MA, and died 27 February 1759 in Charlton, Worches, MA. Notes for John THOMSON, Jr.: This John THOMSON was referred to as Jr. after his grandfather died in 1712. He and Woodland THOMSON, both still boys, each received a lot between 1699 and 1705. On 22 DEC 1713, John paid L100 02 00 for "1 day running line" (on the river for fish). When the first division of land took place, this John, as well as his father, and Benjamin, Woodland and David THOMSON all received land. On 4 MAR 1717, John became Hogg constable for the town. He also received more land in 1719. that same year, Bellingham was founded, and he became a citizen of that town, and all his children were born in Bellingham. It wasn't until after this John THOMSON had died, that the Baptists of Bellingham finally got their church built, and hired the first minister. He died several years before his father. (Sources:"Annals of Mendon" & "The First Thomsons and the Fourth Baptist Church of Bellingham"). Children of John THOMSON and Abigail WHITE are: 20 i. John4 THOMSON, born 30 December 171222. 21 ii. Ichabod THOMSON, born 01 March 1715/16. 22 iii. Abigail THOMSON, born 08 May 1717. Children of John THOMSON and Abigail THAYER are: 23 i. John4 THOMSON, born 15 November 1721. + 24 ii. Martha THOMSON, born 02 February 1723/24 in Bellingham, MA; died 23 October 1767 in Oxford, South Gore, MA. 25 iii. Deborah THOMSON, born 1726. Generation No. 4 24. Martha4 THOMSON (John3, Hannah2 WIGHT, Hannah1 ALBEE)23 was born 02 February 1723/24 in Bellingham, MA23, and died 23 October 1767 in Oxford, South Gore, MA23. She married Ensign Ensign Isaiah BLOOD24 19 January 1743/44 in Oxford, MA25, son of Richard BLOOD and Joanna DAWES. He was born 19 January 1720/21 in Bellingham, MA26, and died Aft. 02 June 1804 in South Brimfield,(now Wales), MA27. Notes for Martha THOMSON: Martha's parents were among the first to organize Bellingham and the Baptist church there. The first meeting house was built in 1680, but by 1684 the congregation had outgrown the building. On 1 JAN 1694, John THOMSON, Jr, Martha's dad, bought the Mendon's "old Meeting House" (had been the Congregational Church) for four pounds in current money of New England. That was back in Mendon. On 17 NOV 1719, the THOMSONS and several other families made a formal petition that they lived too far from the church and school to use them, so should not have to pay taxes. They proposed establishing the new town of Bellingham. Notes for Ensign Ensign Isaiah BLOOD: Isaiah was born after the family was settled in Bellingham. He grew up there, as a member of the Baptist Church, which had been founded by his father, and his wife's father, and several of her uncles. That is , no doubt, where they met and got to know each other. The church covenant was signed in 1750. the very founding of Bellingham, and then of the Baptist church was protested by the people of Mendon, as they believed it was just to get out of paying taxes to the Congregational Church. for the first few years, until Isaiah was about 16 and Martha was 13. The congregation met informally in homes. It wasn't until 1642 that the church was officially recognized. They had no pastor, but selected a ruling Elder and other principal men to certify to the town assessors that their members would be exempt from church taxes. When the Association of Baptist Church in New England was formed, in 1767, Bellingham was one of only four churches that dared to join. They helped lead the struggle for religious freedom. (Source: Thompson, Nancy, "The First Thomsons and the Fourth Baptist Church of Bellingham, MA". Pub. on the THOMSON Page on the Internet, 1997). Isaiah was 55 years old when the Revolution broke out, but being an able-bodied man, he fought along side his sons. The rank of ensign was from the Charlton Militia, from which he went to war, UNDER cOL. jOHN CHANDLER. . He married Sarah HILL 02 September 1777 in Charlton, MA40, daughter of John HILL and Mary. She was born 28 May 1752 in Spencer, MA41, and died Aft. 1814. Notes for Rev. BLOOD Rev. Caleb BLOOD: Caleb BLOOD was born just four years after the Baptist Chruch building had been raised in Bellingham, and went all his growing up years to that church. He was 13 when the Baptist Association was formed. It is not too surprising, then, that he would turn toward the ministry of that church. He was highly praised by the pastor when he told him he wanted to be a preacher. When he was licensed to preach, the pastor at his home parish wrote this recommendation: "The church of Christ in Charlton, in the Baptist constitution, to our sister churches in the same order, wishing you much grace, mercy, and peace, through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ, Our Lord. These are to signify to you that our brother, Caleb BLOOD, is in good standing with us, and is a regular walker both in the world and in the church of God, and he has manifested to us that he has a call to preach the Gospel, upon which we have taken the opportunity to examine him and improve him in the work of preaching and it does appear to us, that he had a gift for the labor, and we recommend him unto you as such, desiring that you may improve him among you in preaching and then give the same if you are satisfied with him in the work. So we subscribe ourselves you brethern in the land. (15 DEC 1777)." Before ordination, Caleb was an itinerant preacher for two years at Dudley and Marlow, NH. He was ordained at Marlow, NH in 1777. In 1779, he served at Weston, MA, and in 1781 he was at Newton, MA. That church was newly organized, and he stayed seven years. He also taught school there, for two years, in the town's south district. In 1786, he accepted a call to Shafts bury, VT. During his 26 years at Shafts bury, the tiny Baptist congregation grew dramatically. He also belonged to the Baptist Association, and did missionary work all through VT, NH, and up into Canada. In "The Rural Vermont Minister", an article in "The History of Rutland County", by Harry P. Smith and Wm. S. Rann, 1886, he was described this way: "Soon after the settling commenced, ministers of the Gospel might be seen traversing the woods and hunting up the scattered sheep in the wilderness. They would ride on horseback or go on foot, as they might be able, with no other equipage than a bridle, saddle, and a pair of saddlebags containing a Bible, Psalm book, and a spare shirt or two, or, if on foot, with less baggage. Thus equipped, they would travel through the woods, mud and snow, preaching at the doors of log houses, or in the forest. anywhere that was most convenient. And in some cases, they have been overtaken in storms, lost their way and have lain out all night, witness this in Elder Caleb BLOOD." He went to serve the Fourth Baptist Church at Boston, in 1807. Three years later, he and Sarah were on the road again, this time to Portland, ME. After just four years, he took sick and died in 1814, at age 60. Sylvester B. BLOOD, born 20 March 182943. 40. Sylvester6 BLOOD (Capt. Isaiah5, Martha4 THOMSON, John3, Hannah2 WIGHT, Hannah1 ALBEE) was born 29 May 1785 in charlton, MA. He married Loretta BLOOD 1809 in Milton, NY44. She was born in Milton, NY. Notes for Sylvester BLOOD: Sylvester moved to Milton, NY in 1805. He was a blacksmith, and began manufacturing scythes at his forge in Ballston Spa. His forge was first at Morning Kill, two miles south of Ballston Spa, but his water supply was limited. So, in 1823, he built a new plant at Kyaderossersa Creek in the town of Milton, and added a department of axes and edged tools. By that time, his excellent workmanship was very well known. He took his son out of school and started him in the business at an early age. (Source: "The Story of the bloods," pp. 58 - 60). Notes for Loretta BLOOD: Loretta was her husband's cousin. (Source: "The Story of the Bloods", pp. 58 - 60). Child of Sylvester BLOOD and Loretta BLOOD is: 62 i. Isaiah7 BLOOD, born Abt. 1811 in Milton, NY; died 1870 in Bloodsville, Ballston Spa, NY. He married Joan GATES. Notes for Isaiah BLOOD: When Isaiah was just 13-years old, his father took him out of school and taught him the tool making business. When Isaiah married in 1831, his father made him a partner. Six years later, Isaiah bought out his father's share, and further enlarged the business. The tools were of the highest quality, which is why they were so popular. The tools all carried the mark, I. Blood. Eventually, Isaiah had 250 skilled workers in his plants, and their yearly output was 144,000 scythes, 96,000 axes, and 120,000 other tools. All were sold by the dozen to retailers, especially in the expanding western states of Ohio and Indiana. As time went on, his products were in demand in all states, as well as Mexico and South America. They were also preferred by lumbermen in the Pacific Northwest. Isaiah refused to fill an order for battle axes from New Orleans, before the Battle of Fort Sumptor, but when he later received an order from the MA Co. of Flying Artillery, he delivered them in 10 days. After Isaiah's death, the company was inherited by his son-in-law, Henry Knickerbocker, who sold it after a few years to the American Axe and Edge Tool Co. the operation was moved in 1900, after two fires, to Glassport, PA. In spite of the fact that Isaiah was a Democrat, he was elected Supervisor of the Whig town of Milton in 1847. He was then elected Mayor of Assembly from the First Assembly District of Saratoga County, in 1851. In 1859, he was again Supervisor of Milton. Then in the fall of that year, he was elected Senator from the 15th District. He was reelected in 1869, but died before his term was up, of typhoid fever. Like his ancestors, Isaiah was Baptist. His home, built in 1843, was a large, Greek revival mansion at Bloodville. The mansion, with its gardens, gazebo, and greenhouse, became an apartment in the 1950's. It suffered from a fire in about 1992, when it was almost 150 years old, but began to be reconstructed in 1995. His home was known as The Maples, because of the landscaping on its spacious grounds. It was first divided into apartments to house the first Navy crew who trained at Kesserling in the 1950's. The fire destroyed the front porch and pillars, as well as the roof. Water used to put out the fire, also destroyed the original plaster. It is said that he was beloved by all his employees, who each came to say good-bye to him in his last hours. Caleb5, Martha4 THOMSON, John3, Hannah2 WIGHT, Hannah1 ALBEE)45 was born 11 July 1779 in Weston, MA46, and died Bet. 1854 - 1859 in Gratiot, LaFayette, WI47. He married (1) Anna COLE48 01 March 1801 in Shaftsbury, Bennington,VT49,50, daughter of Benjamin COLE and Prudence HARD. She was born 20 October 1782 in Shaftsbury, Bennington,VT51, and died 12 November 1835 in LaPorte Co., IN52. He married (2) Hannah N. Abt. 1850 in Boone Co, IL. She was born 1818 in NY53, and died 13 June 1886 in Nora Springs, Floyd, IA53. Notes for Moses BLOOD: Moses was raised in Shaftsbury, VT, where he grew up with and married Anna COLE. The COLE family was very tightly knit, so when Anna's parents made a move to NY, following in the footsteps of their son, Abel, Moses and Anna went along in the wagon train, along with all Ben's other sons and sons-in-law. They lived for awhile in Rodman, Jefferson County, NY, which borders on Lake Ontario. Two of Moses' brothers-in-law served in the War of 1812, and were in the Battle of Sackett's Harbor there. When they left Shaftsbury, Moses and Anna already had two little ones, and a three more were b. in NY. As soon as the New Purchase in IN opened up for settlers, the COLE clan moved on to Connorsville, in 1819. Moses and Abel and Seth COLE blazed a trail through the wilderness to the Blue River, in what later became Shelby County, IN. . Nothing was there when they arrived, and their clan actually founded the town. A total of over 1,000 acres was purchased by various members of the clan in 1820. Moses and Seth picked beautiful sites on the river for their cabins, but when they came back with the family in OCT 1820, two of the three cabins had water standing in them four feet deep from the flooding river. So all seven families had to move into one cabin for awhile. Of course, a new Baptist church was formed and met in the home of Moses and Anna BLOOD. Most of the members were from the BLOOD-COLE clan. This was the first church in Shelby County, formed JUL 1822. The first teacher in the school there was Moses BLOOD. Moses and Anna moved on in about 1835, to a spot northeast of LaPorte, IN., known as Rolling Prairie. Their son, Abel Russell, was already married to Laura LUCAS, and they stayed on for several years. Anna died while in LaPorte, so Moses went on alone, with the rest of his kids, and most of Laura LUCAS' brothers and sisters, as their dad had died and eventually Moses was put in charge of the younger kids. The first settlers to LaPorte had just arrived in 1830, and there were just 15 houses in the town when Moses arrived. By 1836, Moses and his kids arrived in Flora Township, Boone County, IL where his son, Arthur, had built a couple of cabins and his own stone house. They soon bought land north of Belvidere, and Moses became involved in politics there. He was also one of the seven founders of the Baptist church of Belvidere, which celebrated their 150th anniversary in 1989. Sometime before moving on to Gratiot, WI, Moses remarried a Hannah. We have been unable to find any record of that marriage, but Moses and Hannah BLOOD bought land in Gratiot Township, about six miles south of Gratiot, on what is now the highway west of Warren, IL, and was then on the stagecoach line. There were two stage stops in Warren, two miles east of their land. The foundation of their home still stands, as the rest burned and the new home was built on top of it. Arthur, Rev. Caleb II, and Fidelia (BLOOD) STONE'S husband and new wife all moved to Gratiot, also. Fidelia had died and was bur. in Belvidere Cemetery. Moses and Hannah joined the Baptist Church at Apple River, IL, just three miles from their home, but when their son, Rev. Caleb came as the first pastor of the Baptist Chruch at Union, WI (now the south end of Darlington), about 12 miles to the north, they were taken in to that church, as were all the children in the area. Moses died at Gratiot, WI, we are quite sure. No burial site or record has ever been found. Moses and Hannah sold property together in 1854, but in 1859, Hannah was a widow who sold land alone and moved to Floyd Co., IA., to live with a grandson. Hence, the d. is assumed to be between 1854-1859. Notes for Anna COLE: Like most pioneer wives, very little is known about Anna COLE, except that she was a Baptist all her life, and helped start two new churches along with her husband. the first meetings of the church in NY were held in her home, and the same was true in Hanover. She bore eight children between the age of 23 and 46, Her husband lived to the ripe old age of 75 - 80, but she died at age 53, just after they had moved to the third new wilderness home, in LaPorte, IN. (Sources: "Blood Family Bible", "History of Hanover", "History of Connersville, IN", "History of LaPorte, IN" and "History of Lewis County, NY"). Children of Moses BLOOD and Anna COLE are: 63 i. BLOOD: Arthur was the most adventurous member of the family. He went off alone, and built two cabins in Flora Township, Boone Co., IL, claiming two entire sections of land. He also quarried his own stone and built a stone house in Flora. He was the first white settler in the township. Then he returned to IN to m. his sweetheart he left behind. His house was up on a slight rise, from which there is a view of most of the township. It was at the edge of a large grove of trees going on over into the next township, and became called Blood's Point. The first road in the area was named Blood's Point Road, and the cemetery, Blood's Point Cemetery. Arthur was again the first to move on to other parts of IL, selling off a lot of his land to Abel. He later followed his parents up to WI, and bought up all their land when his dad d. He then sold it, became a lawyer, and moved on to Floyd Co., IA. His first wife d. young, but he soon remarried. She married James A. TULLER (FULLER)70 10 June 183570. Child of Amelia BLOOD and James (FULLER) is: 71 i. Loretta B. TULLER8 (FULLER), died 25 January 1851. 64. Abel Russell7 BLOOD (Moses6, Rev. He married Laura LUCAS79 26 October 1828 in Hanover, Shelby, IN80, daughter of Eber LUCAS and Eunice WOOLWORTH. She was born 28 June 1810 in Pinkney, Lewis, NY81,82, and died 25 March 1874 in Charles City, Floyd, IA83. Notes for Abel Russell BLOOD: Abel R. BLOOD was b. in Shaftsbury, VT, but the family moved on to Rodman, NY when he was just 3-years old. By the time he was a young man, the BLOOD-COLE clan had already moved to Hanover, IN. Laura LUCAS, b. in NY at Pinkney, just about two miles from where Abel lived, was about 9-years old when her family moved on to Hanover, IN. After Laura's father, Eber LUCAS died, (her mother had died a couple of years earlier), she m. Abel Russell BLOOD at Hanover. A house originally built by some of the STONE relatives was first located in Hanover, and then moved to a hill a mile down the road. It was brick. Abel and Laura probably lived in that house, which is still in good condition. Abel R. and Laura had 13 children, five of whom were b. in Hanover, IN and eight in Boone Co., IL. They did not move on to LaPorte with Abel's dad, and did not move on to Boone until about 1840 then purchased all the land originally purchased by Abel's younger brother, Arthur, the first settler in Flora Township. It included about two whole sections of land. Abel got paid 2 cents a day for being an early school teacher in Flora at the Shannon School. At that time, it was a log building. In 1847, he built a stone school house for the Shannon School. He quarried the stone off his own property. When this stone school was torn down in 1872, the new one had the date of the school, carved in stone by Abel, embedded in the front porch. Abel and Laura sold off most of their land to Albert and Horace LUCAS, brothers of Laura. Their frame home on Pearl St. Road (originally Blood Point Road) was still standing in 1993, but torn down by 1997. The LUCAS kids also attended the Shannon School, later named District #1. By 1855, Abel and Laura had moved on to Floyd County, IA, by way of a short stop in MO, where his brother, Rev. Caleb then lived. One of Abel's daughters , Eunice YOUNG had already moved there with her husband's whole clan, as did some of his STONE cousins, through his sister, Fidelia STONE, deceased. The city of Charles City did not exist yet, so they lived in St. Charles Township, Floyd Co., and their P.O. was at Freeman, later part of Charles City, west of the river. His brother, Arthur, who now was a lawyer, arrived by 1858. His first wife had d., and he was remarried. Abel and Laura settled down to farm, but over the years also bought and sold a lot of land. Abel lived to the age of 83. When he was 57, he served on the School Board for Riverton Township. Their home was in Section 30, and today there is nothing there but cornfield. They sold land to Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, the famous suffragette's father, and she grew up right next door to them. Her home is being restored, as it was most unusual for the time. Both Abel and Laura are bur. at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, IA. They then moved with the entire YOUNG clan in 1853 to Charles City, Floyd, IA, where they all bought many sections of land. they sold to Abel and Laura one of the first pieces of property they bought. (Sources: "Marriages of Boone County, # 474; "History of Floyd Co", p. 253; "Floyd County Deeds, Original Book). Notes for Charles H. YOUNG: charles and Eunice moved to Boone County ahead of Abel and Laura, and sold land to them. They had 154 and 56/100ths acres by 1854. Their son, Seth M. YOUNG, became an attorney at law in Hamilton, MO. They moved to Caldwell Co., MO in 1869. But, first, they moved down to adjoining Riverton Township, Floyd Co., and Charles was elected trustee in 1858 and again in 1859. He always farmed, and also bought and sold land. After the family moved to MO, Seth finished his "literary" schooling, and then went on to study law and passed the bar in in 1876. He was City Attorney at Hamilton, and "very well loved", according to the history of that county. Moses BLOOD II8 2 (Abel Russell7 BLOOD, Moses6, Rev. He married Sarah Batty HAWKINS124,125,126 08 October 1870 in Charles City, Floyd, IA127, daughter of James HAWKINS and Barbara DAVIS. She was born 03 December 1847 in Scales Mound, JoDavies, IL128,129, and died 11 March 1923 in Denver, CO130. Notes for Moses BLOOD II 2: Young Moses, the grandson of the pioneer from VT, was b. while the family still lived in Flora Township, south of Belvidere. But he would have been too young to start school until they arrived in Charles City, IA. He grew up on the family farm, about three miles south and one west of Charles City schools then were pretty modern in Floyd County. There were no one-room school houses. He went clear into town to school in the old, stone building that was blown down in the terrible tornado in the 1930's, which changed the whole look of the downtown. When he was a young man helping his dad farm, Sarah HAWKINS bought land right across the road from them, and they were m. in 1870. They had four children but the first baby died shortly after birth. So Mabel Clare BLOOD was their only girl, and they also had three boys. They had a nice farmhouse and outbuildings, still standing in 1997, but by then in pretty bad shape, as the ground had just been sold to a quarry, and the people renting were obviously very poor and uncaring about the looks of the place. Moses and Sarah lived on the east side of the river, about five miles from town. When Moses was just 45-years old, he had a bad accident in the woods, followed by a long illness, and died, leaving Sarah and her four kids. When he died, the farm was foreclosed for back taxes, and so Sarah and the kids moved to town. He is bur. in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, IA., but there is no marker. (Source: "Riverside Cemetery Records", Charles City; "History of Floyd Co", (1893), p. 393; Personal Knowledge from Father and Grandmother & three visits to Charles City to see land, get land records, take photos, etc.). Notes for Sarah Batty HAWKINS: Sarah was born while her family lived on a beautiful farm west of Scales Mound, IL, and just a few miles east of Galena. Her parents had come up from KY after first staying for about four years in eastern MO. Her mother d. when she was just 9-years old, and her father then moved to the newly established Chickasaw Co, IA, just next to Floyd Co., where the BLOODS settled. Sarah went to school in chickasaw County, finishing grade school, but we do not know which school. All her older brothers and sisters were land speculators in Chickasaw, and she bought one piece of land, herself, just over the line into Floyd, which brought her in contact with Moses BLOOD, whom she married. After Moses d., she and the kids moved into what had been the first stagecoach stop in Charles City, a stone structure, now under renovation by the Floyd County Historical Society. Her children started moving West, and by the mid-1890's, she too, had moved to Denver. Both Roscoe and Roy helped care for her until Roscoe died. When her son, Roscoe, was terribly ill, his little boy, Russell came to live with her for awhile. That was in 1917. She had been back to Charles City once, in about 1914, to visit Mabel Clare and children, after Mabel's husband disappeared. She then went back to Denver for Roy to take care of her. He put her in a cold water, walk-up flat that was heated by a cook-heating stove. She had a share bath with five or six other old ladies.(Early Retirement Home). Russell would visit her daily, and carry up coal for her and carry out ashes. She d. in Colorado in 1924. Mabel Clare9 BLOOD (Moses BLOOD II8 2, Abel Russell7 BLOOD, Moses6, Rev. She married Stuart Sylvester HARPER145 01 May 1899 in Waterloo Black Haek, , IA146,147, son of William HARPER and Sarah SYLVESTER. He was born 01 September 1876 in Hamilton, O, Canada148, and died Aft. December 1915 in Nova Scotia or At Sea149. Notes for Mabel Clare BLOOD: When she graduated from high school, Mabel became a postal clerk, and kept that job until she m. in 1899. After Stuart left for the Gold Rush, she kept house for Rev. Rice, who had taken them in, and also did washings as long as she was able. When Rev. Rice d., they stayed in the house for about four years, until the banker found out they were squatters. Then she and the girls moved to a little cottage in town, but Bill had to make his own way by firing furnaces for the Episcopal Church and Guild Hall, as well as a couple of stores downtown. He got an apartment upstairs over a store. Then Rev. Bimson became his foster father, until he was ready to leave home. Mabel moved to Cedar Rapids with Mabel and Dreda, and later to Minneapolis, where they lived for about 30 years. She was seriously crippled with arthritis by age 40, and by age 60, depended on two canes to hobble about her small home in Minneapolis. She d. at age 82. Mabel was confirmed in Grace Episcopal Church, Charles City, IA, along with Bill and Dreda, in about 1918. She is bur. at Pleasant View Memorial Gardens, Burnsville, Dakota Co., MN., along with Dreda, her daughter. (Sources: Personal knowledge of her son, Wm. Harry HARPER; "Charles City Directories", 1880 - 1928; "Farm Directory of St. Charles Township"; "Grace Episcopal Church Records", CharlesCity, IA). Notes for Stuart Sylvester HARPER: Stuart went on a Gold Rush to New Zealand. He wrote his family to let them know he had struck it rich, and that he was in Nova Scotia, on his way home. He never arrived. Stuart always said his parents died young and that he was sent to live with his grandparents, and perhaps that is true. But Grandpa HARPER, Rev. William, was already deceased before he was born. He may have lived with his grandmother until 1890, when she died. He says he ran away with the circus at age 15, so it could be he ran away when his grandmother died, because he had no where else to go.. (SOURCES: Hamilton Library Archives, Hamilton City Directories, Censuses). He became a famous bareback rider billed as "Red Harper", because of his flaming red hair. Then he had a bad accident, and had to leave the circus. He worked at many things after he met and m. Mabel, from traveling photographer, to movie projectionist, to carnival vendor, never able to quite take care of his family. His last chance for fame was his attempt to strike it rich. (Source: Interviews with his son, Wm. Harry HARPER; Card sent by Stuart from Nova Scotia, Postcard of the family waiting for Stuart's return). In JUN 2000, I finally located Stuart's baptismal record through the Anglican Archives of the Diocese of Niagra, held by Mills Memorial Library, McMaster U., in Hamilton, O. He was baptised at St. Thomas Anglican Parish, where his parents were m., on 22 SEP 1876, when he was 22 days old. He was b. on the same day, 1 SEP, that his son, W.H. HARPER d. on in 1986. Caleb5, Martha4 THOMSON, John3, Hannah2 WIGHT, Hannah1 ALBEE) was born 24 May 1905 in Algona, Kossuth, IA166, and died 01 September 1986 in Harper's Woods, Stark Co., IL166,167,167. He married Elizabeth Ann "Betty" MOELLER 15 October 1928 in St. Peter's, Keokuk, Lee, IA168, daughter of Joseph MOELLER and Mary BRERTON. She was born 23 May 1904 in Keokuk, Lee, IA168,169,170. Notes for Wm. Harry HARPER: He went by Bill as a child, but by Harry or W.H. as an adult. Harry and Betty lived their entire married life in Kewanee, Henry, IL. In 1940, they bought 10 acres of virgin timber on Spoon river, two miles west of Bradford, Stark, IL, and 17 miles SE of Kewanee. By 1945, they had finished building a brick summer home in the woods. From then on, the family spent their summers at the woods, and also went out in the winter, occasionally. Harry drove back and forth to Kewanee to work. By 1948, electricity had been put in, along with a bathroom, and heat was put in in about 1951. Eventually, when Betty was pretty crippled up with arthritis, they moved out to the woods and stayed most of the year there, from about 1968 - 1986, when Harry d. of lung cancer. Meanwhile, in the 1950's, when Harry's sister Mabel's husband d., they purchased her log cabin up in Chippewa Forest, on Big Sand Lake, MN, and spent their summers there. Also, in 1945, the family bought their first home and moved to 224 E. Prospect St., Kewanee. Betty sold the home three years after Harry d., and moved into an apartment in Arrow Towers, Kewanee, from 1989 - 1995. At that time, she was 91, and very sick and unable to take care of herself. She then moved to the Young Home, 115 S. Vine St., Kewanee, where she lived from then on. Harry's first job was with the Kewanee Star-Courier, as advertising manager. that was right after graduating from the School of Journalism, U. of I., Iowa City, IA, in 1927. By 1934, he got his first customer for Mail-O-Graph, a new company he founded to print broadsides and circulars. His first big customer was Montgomery Wards, nation-wide. His small office was in the Star-Courier building until 1940, and all printing was done on the newspaper's presses until then. At that time, he built a new plant. He was president and general manager, but it belonged to Lee Enterprises. Eventually, he bought out all stock, and became independent. He also added "Trail Blazer's Almanac and Pioneer Guidebook" , which eventually became a bigger money maker even than Mail-O-Graph. He "retired" at age 64, in 1969, and Bill became president. The company started going down hill, and by the time of Harry's death, it was greatly in debt, but no one in the family was aware of it, until the government came in and closed the place for non-payment of taxes. That was in 1993. Bill and Carol then moved to Cedar Rapids, IA, where he got a job for a weekly paper run by a family he knew. Carol also got a job there. Bill's son, Richard, had also been working at Mail-O-Graph. He went back to get his Mortuary Degree, and went to work for a funeral home in Peoria. Notes for Elizabeth Ann "Betty" MOELLER: Betty graduated from St. Peter's High School, Keokuk, IA, and then went to the U. of I., Iowa City, majoring in speech and drama. After graduation, she moved in with a cousin and wife, Joe and Louise Welsh, also her godparents. She worked for a publishing company in Davenport. She and Harry had met at college, and he drove back and forth from Kewanee each weekend, to court her. Betty never worked outside the home, but was highly active in both Church and community. she was President of the Peoria Diocesan Council of Catholic women in the 1940's, and then became Third Vice President of the National council, and Province Director for IL and IN. She then was Chairman of Retreats at Nauvoo, IL, where three retreats per year were put on by DCCW under her direction, for 20 years. Always very active in visitation Parish, Kewanee, she was leader of St. Teresa Study Club for 35 years, and active in the Altar Society until age 90. Betty was a member of The Ladies' Reading Club from about 1942 - 1993, and then honorary member. She spent many happy hours at the Woods, studying and taking slides of birds. She also taught children and grandchildren much about wildflowers and birds. Harry and Betty dedicated their Woods to the State of IL as a Nature Preserve in about 1981. Betty's mother, Mame MOELLER, lived with the family from 1934, when her husband, Joe, d. of stomach cancer, until she d. in 1959, at age 89. Her sister, Marie (MOELLER) HERBNER also lived with them from 1945 - 1947, then remarried and moved back to California, only to return after her second husband d., and stay again until she d., MAR 1964, at age 74. After her husband died, Betty stayed at 224 E. Prospect for four years. She then sold the home and took an apartment for five years. She then was no longer able to care for herself, at 91, so she entered Peggy Young's Care Home, at 116 S. Vine St., where she still is at age 98 in 2002. Children of Wm. HARPER and Elizabeth MOELLER are: 115 i. Harriet Ann11 HARPER, born 22 February 1930 in Kewanee, Henry, IL171,172; died 19 July 2000 in The Villa, DesMoines, IA; Stepchild. Notes for Harriet Ann HARPER: When Harriet entered the Dominicans, she took the name of Sr. Mary Henryk, but this was changed to Sr. Harriet when the community became more liberal, and allowed the sisters to take their baptismal names. She got her college degree in art before entering the Dominicans at Sinsinawa, WI. She was first stationed at St. John High School, Milwaukee, WI, then at Chryenne, WY, then at Sioux Falls, SD, then at Faribault, MN, then Richardson, TX, and finally Chicago, IL in the inner city, where she built an art department for grades 1 - 8. She developed diabetes while in Cheyenne, and it got worse as the years went by. She had her middle finger, right hand removed in about 1979, then five toes over the years, and finally her right leg was amputated below the knee in DEC 1997, at Mercy Hospital, Chicago. After that, she had to enter the Sisters' St. Dominic Villa, Dubuque, a nursing home. That was in MAR 1998. she died at The Villa in the summer of 2000. Sadly, the school in Chicago was no longer able to find an art teacher after she left. In the four years she was there, she had several students win the city-wide art scholarship. she also took a Sabbatical in 1982, and learned to make icons. She made quite a number, which were sold to bring in money for the retired sisters at the Mound and the Villa. Two of her icons were placed in a special chapel in the Mother house, Sinsinawa. + 116 ii. Elizabeth "Betty" HARPER, born 10 November 1931 in St. Francis, Kewanee, Henry, IL. + 117 iii. 3. Betty: I have all the usual stuff. I have researched his land holdings since coming to New England. I have his holdings and timeline from Boston to Waterfarm in Braintree. Then his extensive impact on the development of Medfield. Then on to Mendon! I have visited the site of the mill and walked his lands adjacent to the mill. Swansea is the next target. I am interested in James's holdings and James's son's, Benjamin's holdings. I would love to add Hannah's line to my data base. I have close to 5000 Albee descendants so far. How is your research doing? I live 5 miles from where it all started. 3. Alice, I am probably asking for the wrong thing. I grew up in Hopedale. My ancestors go back to 1638 in England. Obadiah Wheeler came to America and settled in Concord. For the most part, my ancestors lived in Worcester County. In the early 1900's, a number of them lived in Mendon. A relative told me that there were so many Wheelers in Mendon, they named a street Wheeler Street. That would have been located across the street from the old airport. There is no evidence now that it ever existed, but I want to check out the history. I would appreciate any information about my family. Thanks. Ralph N.
