    1. [MA-MENDON] George Washington
    2. Alice Palladini;
    3. . GEORGE ~ WASHINGTON Our first President began his first tour of the country Thursday, October 15,1789. George Washington started his tour of the "Eastern States" accompanied by Major Jackson, Mr. Bear and 6 servants. They spent their first night at a tavern In Rye, Now York. Fairfield Connecticut was his first overnight stopover in New England from there be went on to breakfast at Stratford, CT, The party ferried across the Housatonic River and spent the night at Milford.CT. >From Milford,CT. they proceeded to Brookfield, Mass. along the Old Boston Post Road to Boston, where the much talked about "Hancock Incident" occurred. Governor John Hancock was not on hand to greet President Washington' on his arrival as he should have been, Many took this as a deliberate slight by the Governor, Although the next day when he did call on the President he pleaded ill health. >From Boston Washington's party went to New Hampshire by way of Marblebead,, Salem, Ipswich, Newburyport and Andover. Back in Massachusetts ; they toured through Haverill, Andover, Lexington, Watertown , Needham, Sherborn, Holliston, Milford, Mendon, Uxbridge. In all this tour lasted one month. In Mendon Washington's party sent a messenger on ahead to the tavern of Washington's friend Col. Philip AmIdon where he was expected, Col. Amidon, was not at home and the mistress or maid of the house not knowing when Washing-ton was expected told the messenger that the Inn was full,, which It was. This tavern is the building that now stands on Main Street behind the gas station on the corner of Route 16 and Main St. owned at the present time by Edward Bouleau.( now 2004 and for many years past by David Lowell.) (stands across from the Mendon Historical Museum and Founder's Park) Upon being refused lodging at the Amidon Tavern Washington Party continued on by way of the Post Road to Uxbridge where they were warmly received at the tavern owned by Mr. Taft. When Col. Amidon returned home and found what had happened he realized who the messenger bad been from and hurried after him, But Washington was already nicely settled in North Uxbridge. So after a brief visit Col. Amidon returned to Mendon without Washington's party. The Amidon tavern built before 1789 was In colonial days a stopping place for the stage coaches traveling the Post Road, even though they had to leave the road to reach the tavern, Nathan Hale stopped at -the tavern for breakfast , Jan, 26, 1776 with recruits from Connecticut on the way to Boston to join his Regiment. >From an article in the Mendon Historical Museum. No name or date given: There is much written about WHY George Washington did NOT sleep in Mendon. Today is George's birthday (2004) This is one of the shorter versions but covers the principle details of the events, that happened that day. Have a Nice Day, Alice

Then if the person finds it's worth researching, that is up to them to do. Who knows could help someone. Alice

    1. [MA-MENDON] Bates/Chilson
    2. Hi to all, I haven't mentioned this lately -- perhaps some are new and don't know. I am working on a book on the descendants of Walsingham CHILSON of Marblehead, MA, and Saco, ME. The bulk of his descendants were from his son John who moved to Bellingham, MA. If any of you have any CHILSON connections, I would love to hear from you! In a nutshell, the CHILSON line that connects to BATES goes like this... 1. Immigrant Walsingham Chilson and wife Mary of Marblehead, MA and Saco, ME. 2. John Chilson, Sr. and Sarah Ann Jenkes -- who lived in Lynn and worked at Saugus Iron Works and then moved to Bellingham. 3. Walsingham Chilson and Susanna Edmunds of Bellingham. 4. Joseph Chilson, Sr. and wife #1 Mercy Shuttleworth of Bellingham. (His second wife was Lydia Pratt.) 5. Martha Chilson and Joseph Bates. She was the only child of Mercy Shuttleworth. All others were children of Lydia Pratt. This particular group of Chilsons were mostly in Bellingham. But others of the same family moved to Mendon and Uxbridge and Smithfield and Glocester. However I see in the list a Nathan Darling.. ayt above May's name.. Wonder if " Nathan" could be her father's name.. Worth looking into. Yes I had the 1850 census and that is the same family. The Mendon VR's has children born to Melitiah and Mary Knowlton.. including my Gr. Gre. Grand. Hannah Knowlton w/m David Sweet. Now Hannah's obit says she was born in Cumberland, R.I.. making me think the family may have moved there from Mendon, Ma. when the children were young. (so much for obits being right ,huh?) I think maybe Nathan Darlings may be worth looking into?? Bad handwriting someplace could have mistaken Nathan for Ethan?? I have the last child born in Mendon in 1832. Others were born somewhere else. Thanks so much Jean.. Sure appreciate all your replies. As I am sure all the list does. Thanks Again, if you find any other tidbit, please let me know. Also, I checked Cohasset records and found that Joseph BATES had a brother Mical (yet another spelling!) BATES b. 6 Apr 1753 which explains his having a son Michael/Micah. Also, as Alice said, Joseph was b. in Cohasset. However, my source gives the baptism date rather than the birth date -- 30 Sept 1733. REBECCA2 BATES, b. 18 December (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 28, Entry says b. 18 Dec 17[torn].); m. SIMON T. BICKNELL, 28 February 1828, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 245, Simon T. Bicknell of Milford.). ii. JOSEPH BATES, b. 4 September 1779, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 27.). iii. BENJAMIN BATES, b. 6 December 1780, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 27.); m. RHODA KILLEY, 23 February 1806, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 244.). iv. JOSHUA BATES, b. 20 March 1782, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 27.). v. JOHN BATES, b. 15 June 1784, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 27.); d. 16 June 1784, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 449.). vi. JEDEDIAH BATES, b. 10 July 1786, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts (Source: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vital Records of Mendon, MA, to 1850, (1920), page 27.). Notes for JOSEPH BATES: Mendon VRs show two children born to Joseph Bates and Sarah: Clark b. 21 Oct 1771 Hannah b. 20 Apr 1776 Alice Palladini says Sarah was Sarah HAYWARD. There is no marriage of Joseph BATES and Sarah in Mendon. However, the Bellingham VRs show a marriage intention for Joseph BATES and Mrs. Sarah HAYWARD on 15 Oct 1762. Joseph and Sarah had the following children born in Bellingham: Isaac b. 28 Feb1763 Martha b. 20 Dec 1764 Micah b. 13 May 1769 Alice also has a record that seems to suggest that Joseph BATES had a son named Michael. I find a Michael BATES m. Chloe ATTWELL of Attleboro, intention filed Mendon 18 Jan 1793. I would say he would have belong to the first wife Sarah in order to be married by 1793. And I would further suggest that he is the "Micah" shown in the birth records above. Neither Bellingham nor Mendon VRs show Joseph BATES' birth. A search a little further afield will be needed. 1. Re: [MA-MENDON] Speaking of the Bates Line.
    2. Alice Palladini;
    3. Hi Again, Yes Sue I have Joseph Bates married to Sarah Hayward as his first wife.. . Unless I have the dates mixed up, I have Joseph and Martha married 1779 and all the chn, born 1779 and after,, and he mar. Sarah Hayward in 1762 and I have no chn for her. I did not research this line .. It came from Simon Bicknell's grand daughter and from the Bates Association Genealogy. So I maybe wrong. Be interesting to see what you have Sue R. However Myla T. claims Chilson was Rebecca Bates mother anyway. If this could be cleared up and add that Michael belongs in this family, would even be an addition to the Bates Ass. Genealogy, by Mr. & Mrs. Russell Bates. (Russell Bates died a few months ago) Alice
