I suggest you gather all the information you can in Smithville, Chenango Co. area and Troupsburg, Steuben Co. area on the White and Vickery families and work backwards from there. In NY, land records are essential to research because the vital records are not very good. Do check the land records! Also, check the probate records. Those two records classes are very good in NY. There are lists for those areas that might be of help... For Chenango Co., sign up at... NY-CENTRAL-L-request@rootsweb.com For Steuben Co., sign up at... NY-SOUTHERN-L-request@rootsweb.com Put the single word "subscribe" in both the subject line and the text box. (without quotes) With any luck, you might find some White researchers on one or both of those lists. A comment about Troupsburg area -- there seem to be many families from the RI/CT border area who wound up in Steuben Co. I've been trying to trace a Chilson line back from there myself. Good luck! 3. Hi again Nan and ev 1, Nan, I do not have any info on that family. :( As an area historian and genealogist, besides my own family who stayed in the area. (not very adventuous:) Many families and names moved on in the 1800's to NY,, PA and points west . That's when a list like this one can be helpful in locating more info on families that moved elsewhere. Is there anyone else on the list that can help Nan ? Alice

    3. Morning all Listers, Sue R thank you for sharing the Thayer/White update with all our Mendon researchers. As u all know by now the Thayer and Aldrich families are 2 names that draw the most researchers to Mendon, Ma. and area. Ironically, I also moderate the Aldrich list on yahoo and am Past Pres. and Sec. of the National Aldrich Association. . :) I descend from both families, ands also the White and other Founding families. Joel that strile in Uxbridge was very interesting.. Amazing in the midst of the Great depression that anyone would want to strike.. Seems if u had a job at that time no matter what the pay or circumstance , you were one of the fortunate ones.. ( my opinion only) There is a lot of interest in the old businesses in the area, seems poor records were kept of many small mills , shops etc. Tim, I remember Miscoe soda also. :) and I have yet to find an orange crush that even comes near to that one.. All today , to me, taste like kool-aid. Yes Miscoe Bottling Company is still operating at the same site but they strickly do bottled water. They were very generous to the Mendon Historical Society when we were renovating the Museum abt. ,1994 also. When u walk up the brick walk and new steps , u can thank Miscoe Bottling Co. :) It is nice to see more activity on the list.. There is a lot of history in this area, and in all local libraries a goodly amount of genealogical material. I know anyone visiting the area never go home without a good find or a new tidbit.. Please ask queries and share with the list any tidbit , I am sure you will get some help and in sharing you will be helping another reseraher. Have a nice day, Dreary rain here and cool for end of May. Alice

    3. Worcester Daily Telegram Saturday, 13 July 1935 "TEXTILE UNION CHIEF TO SPEAK. Anthony VALENTI, National Officer, to Address Uxbridge Workers. Strike Unchanged. U. T. W. Progress Will Be Submitted to All Union Locals Today. "UXBRIDGE--July 12--Anthony VALENTI, secretary-treasurer of the Woolen and Worsted division of the United Textile Workers, will present at a meeting of all members of Local 20?6 at 10 a. m. tomorrow, the program adopted by the executive board of the UTW. The members, workers in all four plants of the town now in operation as well as those in the Rivulet plant--now closed--will be called upon to ratify the program. "There was no change in the local strike situation today. The sole activity was a meeting of the Worsted division, at 3 p. m. in Union Hall on South Main street, under the direction of Joseph A. WILSON, president, J. William GREEN, UTW organizer in charge of the strike and several strikers spoke. "No further action was taken by either Federal or State authorities in arbitrating the strike. Developments seemed to be held up pending action of the UTW program. "The U. T. W. program will be acted upon tomorrow and Sunday by all the locals in the country, and after its acceptance will then be presented Monday to all textile manufacturers." I found this on the same copied page as an obituary I ordered from the Worcester Public Library, and thought it might be of interest to someone researching the surnames VALENTI and GREEN. Rev. 3. Reading through the events that Alice so nicely posted, she mentioned the Miscoe school. It jogged my memory of something entirely different. My grandfather and I used to go down to the Miscoe Springs bottling plant to pick up their Soda. Their products were wonderful. My grandfather maintained that the spring water made the difference. The orange crush was my favorite, complete with the pulp. We always got the birch beer. Grandpa Daunt claimed that Coke was trying to buy them out & shut them down, due to their superior quality. Anybody else remember Miscoe Springs Soda (Tonic for you old-timers). My mouth waters. Tim

    3. Morning Mendon Listers, Thank You Lisa for the notice on the Historical Program at the Miscoe School.. Yes, I did attend, had a special invitation( :).. The program was excellent and I have asked that it be repeated at the Mendon Historical Societies Meeting in Oct. 2005. So anyone who missed it on May 20th, will have a chance to see it in Oct. at the Mendon Senior Center on Providence St. I will update the list sooner to the time. It has also come to my attention, The National Aldrich Association (NAA) Reunion will be held in Mendon July 16 and 17th.. Final plans are not complete, but I will pass it on to the list when I hear more. The annual Taft Reunion usually held in June, I believe, will not be held this year. I believe the association opted to have only the 5 year reunions. As soon as I find out more I will post it also. The Mendon Historical Socuety ha s acquired the Mendon Records Room, another historical building, a few doors down from the Museum on Main St. Work is being done and the society hopes in the near future to have a special research room with all the historical data and books that are now in the museum. Once again I will keep u posted when this building will be ready for visitors. This is cetainly long overdue but is in the works at present and hopefully it maybe ready by mid-summer. So that's about Mendon's update at present.. You all have a nice day, Alice List Mom and Pres. of Mendon Historical Society
