Sorry, I failed to give the only vitals that I have on James Baldwin. This we know, Born in 1814 in MA - [his own statement in court]. No town or city. No birthplace [town] or parent's names. 1820 census only lists head of household. A record handed down from his niece does state that he had two sisters named Jane and Ann. How true this is, I don't know. Her statement, and family stories, say that he was a sailor. [Through the years that morphed into a captain, drowned at sea, drowned in a ship wreck on the Mississippi in 1860] [That could not have been true, as court records state that he died before Feb 1859 term of court - he was a plaintiff in a suit]. I have talked most family researchers into eliminating that from their charts. * By mid 1830s we know that he was in New Orleans, as he married there, he would have been a in teens, if with parents would not have been head of household; if a sailor would probably have been missed by census. * Had three children born in LA in 1838, 1843, and 1848. * In 1850 census he is listed in Scott County IN census with wife and three children. * In 1852 another child is born, in Indiana. * He filed suit in court in Scott County IN in 1856. * He is listed as plaintiff in suit filed in 1858. * He is listed as deceased in court records in Feb 1859 term. * These are proved. I have been looking at MA places close to water - sea, canals, etc. I have been looking at census, trying to find head of households who would have a son that age. My next step is to find copy of C C Baldwin genealogy and see if I can find something there. I have also looked, and had others look, at Baldwins who may have worked on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Thanks for your interest. Perhaps you can take a new look at this and tell me where I have missed something to look at. Good morning Alice and Listers. Is good to know that others are searching for a Baldwin ancestor. I have been looking for our elusive Baldwin ancestor for many years - some years a more determined effort than others. Retirement and a computer have allowed me to step up the search a bit - and from my own chair. In the past year I have proved some 'family stories' and thrown some by the wayside. I've found the year he died, documented; found another child that we didn't know about; found court documents where he was a witness or bondsman. And still, I can not find his birthplace or parentage, which is stated as 1814 in MA on several documents of his children. But no mention of his parents, siblings or birthplace. But I am continuing the search - I know that James Baldwin will slip a bit some place, some time, and leave a clue. And I'll be ready for that time with a loud squeal and a big smile on my face! Yes!!!! [Any clue forwarded from a Lister will be rewarded with a hearty Thank You!!] Nancy Walker Baldwin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alice Palladini" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 02, 2001 8:09 AM Subject: [MA-MENDON] OPPS! Hi Alice, And...a good thing there are people who are good enough to keep us on our toes and honest!! :-) I'll sure be a happy camper when all of my books and files are accessible again! On the Haseltine/Wood/Nichols- I did an article for The Genealogist a few years ago on Edward Wood of Charlestown and his descendants into the 4th generation. The line that went into Mendon and surrounding towns descends from him through his son Thomas who resided at Rowley (I say without looking at the book). As to the NICHOLS, my only connection with them is through the marriage of a Gaskill daughter (Hannah) to a David Nichols - have some deeds, etc. in those elusive files of mine which prove her parentage. Jan D.

This is in response to Alice's comment on Daniel Wilcox whose children from second marriage were Mayflower descendants. Here's a quote from Wilcox/Wilcoxson Families of New England by Martha Scott Osborne, publ. 1990. "Daniel Wilcox, b. ca 1634, son of Edward Wilcox. Second marriage 28 Nov 1661, Plymouth, MA, Elizabeth Cooke who d. 6 Dec 1715, Tiverton, RI, dau. of John and Sarah Warren Cooke; res. Portsmouth, RI; ch by first marriage Daniel and Samuel; ch by second marriage Mary, Sarah, Stephen, John, Edward, Thomas, Lydia, Susannah, Judith, Job; he d. 2 Jul 1702, Tiverton, RI." It appears that, as of 1990, the first wife was still unknown. Sue

Morning Again, Sue R. while looking for my Wilcox data , I ran across your extensive history and data in my files. :) Anyone interested in the Wilcox line, Sue is the one to ask. Daniel Wilcox, b. abt 1674 , had 2 wives, Wife no. 1's name has never been found.. However wife no. 2 is Hannah Cooke, and all descendant of the 2nd marriage are Mayflower Descendants. At one time, the MF Society accepted all Daniel Wilcox descendants but in later years, only accept desc. from the 2nd marriage. I desc. from the 1st marriage.. Has anyone ever found the name of his first wife? I have lots of holes here in dates and etc. on this line. Any and all help would be appreciated. TIA Alice
Morning Sue R. and all members, Sue, your message finally made it to the list. Whatever or whoever did what, looks like it worked. Is anyone else having a problem that have with AOL 6 and belong to Rootsweb list?? I am not up on this, however anyone having this problem , please contact Sue Roe [email protected] and she can probably help you. Jim B. it was discussed on the Newbee List owners list. I did send the post to Sue, They said it was all fixed now. ???? Thanks Jim B. for helping Sue. You all have a nice day, mine will be a busy one, company a-coming and my pre- birthday family day.. but not too busy to check my e mail, occasionally . :) Alice
