Hi Barb, I am known to be famous for typos! So, since the library is only 5 minutes away, I'll double check the records on the dates you mentioned. On Provided Southwick, I have the 1641 entry as well as her baptismal date of 6 December 1639. My first thought was that there were two by the name of Provided and the first one died young. However, Provided Gaskin (sic) made a deposition on 18 July 1695 at which time she stated that she was "aged fifty-six yeares." This would place her year of birth as 1639. I have gone on the basis that there was a transcriptional error in the Salem VRs (which would not be the first one I have found). Oh, the source for her depositon is from the Register, "Potter Family Records,", volume 18: 150-151. I am open to thoughts on that though. Jan Delorey
Hi Alice, The Burch name (and variations) does appear in the Bristol RI Church Records, transcribed by the late Ruth Sherman for The American Genealogist (TAG). I picked these out of entries but not sure how they, or if they, fit in. Birch: Samuel Birge (sic) son of John baptized 7 September 1712 when he owned the Covenant (TAG, 70). Samuel and John Smith, sons of Daniel and Elizabeth, baptized on 10 July 1715 (TAG, volume 70). baptized on 19 July 1696, children of Tho: Birch & Elizabeth his wife- Thomas, Robert, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Hannah Smith: Taken into full communion Mr. Smith of Newport 9 October 1698 (TAG, 66) baptized George Smith, son of Mrs Smith of Newport, 13 July 1701 (TAG, 69). baptized Abigail Smith, daughter of James Smith & wife by virtue of communion of churches: being children of the Church of Christ at Weymouth, 12 July 1702 (TAG, 69) Corbett: Sarah, daughter of "Mr. Cobit" baptized 5 January 1689/90 (TAG, 66) Propounded to the Church the dismission of Deacon Samuel Cobitt being removed Fairfield, 7 May 1701 (TAG 66) Jan
Derby, I'm also a descendant of Jonathan and Alice (Pickering) Gaskill. Alice beat me to the punch in replying to the note and, after she posted, I didn't post because our dates are a little different at times and I can't say who is right because I didn't keep hard copies of the pages from the Salem VRs to verify for typos on my part which is always a possibility for me. I do differ with Alice on date of birth of Jonathan (4) Gaskill because I found a death for the Jonathan b. 26 Jan 1698/9 on 21 Nov 1703 in Salem. So apparently our Jonathan was the second son of that name born to the same couple. The rest of the dates which were given by Jan Delorey are in agreement with what I have, except that (and again I could have made a typo) she has the birth of Provided Southwick as 6:10[December]:1639 while the VRs entry I have is simply 10m:1641 from the published Salem VRs (citing Ct. F. = Essex Quarterly Court). I have put Jan's information in my remarks until I can recheck my data. And Lord only knows when that will be. But anyway, hello cousin! Barb Petty [email protected]
Hi All Again, Jan, BURCH/Birch is a new name in the Mendon area for ME. :) However I do see in the Mendon VR'S that they were married in Mendon, All my years at the Museum and etc. I never had a soul come in and research those names. Now the intentions were not filed in Mendon.. Wonder where the intentions were filed?? There are entries in the Mendon Prop. records on Pgs. 1002/03 that Thomas Burch, James Albee John Albee nad others laid out lands. Mentions in Uxbridge I checked Uxbridge VR's and no BURCH.. If you think these records would help you, I'll see what I can do about getting a copy to you. Smith could be more a R.I. name than Mendon name.. wonder if they were filed in Smithfield, R.I. ?? Can anyone help here with Burch/Smith?? However I checked Austin's and Burch/Birch is not a R.I. name. and NO Sarah born to any Smith's either. Not much help huh?? Alice =========== Looking for parents on: Thomas BURCH/Birch who married at Mendon on 4 December 1717 Sarah SMITH - No parents on either.
Thanks, Jim. I've signed up for the NAA and hopefully will be able to hook up with additional info. Corbett Gen; (2) BACKGROUND HISTORY ON ROBERT CORBETT It is not known what year Robert Corbett immigrated to the American Colonies from England but per the writing of below records show that he was in Weymouth, MA in the years 1678-79. We do not know his birthdate or his parentage. "In the year 1678-79, Robert Corbet was one of 128 men in Weymouth, MA who "took the oath of allegiance to His Majesty, Charles II of England, before the Worshipful Joseph Dudley, Assistant." (The History of Weymouth, MA, Vol. I, p. 327) As far as anyone knows, Robert Corbett first settled in Weymouth, MA sometime before the King Philip's War in 1675 and 1676. The History of Weymouth, on p. 327, has the following: (which comes from the Archives of Massachusetts, Vol. 68, p. 179) In March 1676, the following petition was sent to the Governor and Council assembled at Boston: "The humble request of the committee of the Militia of Weymouth, humbly sheweth, that for as much as the numbers of Brantry and whereas we understand that both Hingham and Brantry have all, or very near all their men set at liberty from the country service to attend the defense of their town and furthermore considering that our town by reason of the disadvantageous situation of it is more hardly defended than either of theirs, they being more plane and compact, therefore our humble request to your Honors is, that we having ten able men upon the Country's service at those towns upon the Connecticut River, may have them set at liberty and sent home by your Honors' order, because of the great want of men for our defense, both embolden us into this request, which if you shall see meet in your pleasure to grant, it will be a great encouragement to us, but if otherwise we shall humbly acquiesce in your pleasure concerning it and pray as in duty we are bound over. William Torrey; In the name of the Committee of Militia of Weymouth. March 8th, 1676" The names of the men are: John Arnold, John Ashdowne, Isaac Cakebread, Jeremiah Clothier, Robert Corbet, John Ludden, Abram Shaw, Joshua Phillips, Benjamin Poole, John Record." The above information was taken from 13 Generations of Corbett History written and compiled by Gordon L. Corbett, 5940 Encina Road #1, Goleta, CA 93117-2242 and James Corbett. Robert Corbett background information continuedÂ… Robert Corbett fought in King Phillip's War as part of a troop from Weymouth, MA a coastal town just south of Boston, MA. In 1682 Robert had moved to Mendon where he married John Rockwood's daughter, Priscilla. Robert and Priscilla had two sons, John and Joseph. Robert stayed in Mendon, MA till possibly 1690, which may have been till the time of Priscilla's death. (for which there is no record) In the Annals of Mendon, 1685, the following: "A Rate made this 11 Jan. 1685 to defray Mr. Rawson's salary for half the year beginning at the 25 Oct. March 1686L (various names) Robert Corbett: 00L 13s 02 p." This is 13 shillings and 02 pense, the currency at the time. This shows Robert Corbett in 1688 and 1689 still listed as a resident of Mendon and taxed in the latter year. He is not listed in the rate 25 Oct. 1691-92, as by that time he had removed to Woodstock. According to Ballou's History of Milford, "John Rockwood provided John Corbett with a liberal education that qualified him to become a doctor, and a leading citizen of that area. When he died at age 43, his estate was valued at 1873 pounds." So it is believed that when Priscilla died and Robert Corbett left the Mendon area, he left his children with his father-in-law, John Rockwood, who raised them and saw to their education. Sometime after Robert's wife, Priscilla died, Robert Corbett joined a new group of pioneers from Braintree and Mendon who moved 20 or 30 miles south, and established a new community known as Roxbury, MA, now known as Woodstock, CT. Robert purchased a homestead from one of the original proprietors. The first white settlers of Woodstock were pioneers from Roxbury, MA now part of Boston. Clarence Winthrop Bowen in History of Woodstock, CT, printed privately by the Plimpton Press of Norwood, MA in 1926, wrote on p. 15, "What in 1686 became New Roxbury, and in 1690, Woodstock, was a fraction of the territory granted in 1635 by the Council of Plymouth." On page 35, Bowen says, "Nathaniel Aspinwall, Edmund Chamberlain, John Carpenter and Robert Corbett, purchased right or homesteads from the original proprietors." It is here Robert Corbett married Abiel Twitchell and their children Damourous and Daniel were born. We know that Robert Corbett died in what is now Woodstock, CT on September 18th, 1695 per the original Vital Records of Woodstock, Vol I, pg. 74, which were available for viewing and copying in the Office of the Town Clerk in 1993. Twitchell Line from Abiel Twitchell . ---------------------------------- There's more I think :) was probably too large for the notes. :) Let me know if you need more. Alice

Looking for parents on: Thomas BURCH/Birch who married at Mendon on 4 December 1717 Sarah SMITH - No parents on either. Also, Joseph CORBETT who married at Mendon on 3 July 1733 Deborah Albey/Albee. I am ok on the Albee family who intermarried with the Thayers - also ok on them. Jan Delorey
Alice, Can I sneak into the Cooke cousins...just discovered I have a line from Walter Cooke through his daughter Hannah who married James Albee at Medfield on 18 October 1671. Their son Benjamin Albee (don't have his birth record) had a daughter Abigal, born at Mendon on 15 March 1701 who married there on 18 July 1722 Richard Holbrook. Their son, Richard, born at Mendon on 7 February 1726/7, removed to Pownalborough (Wiscasset) Maine where he married on 15 October 1751 Sarah Young. Someplace I have an account of Richard and some of his Albee relatives who also removed to Pownalborough and got themselves involved in provoking some Indian hostilities. I do have the deed that proves Richard's removal from Mendon to Pownalborough if anyone else goes through this line. Also, the children of Richard and Sarah (Young) Holbrook claim ancestry through Henry Sampson of the Mayflower through Sarah's lines. Jan Delorey
I think someone asked about Patience GASKILL who married Jonathan Aldrich at Smithfield, RI on 17 March 1742, "both of Mendon." (Arnold, Vital Records of Rhode Island, 3:5). Patience was the daughter of Jonathan and Alls (sic) Pickering) GASKILL. Although her birth was not recorded, she is named as a sibling in the will of her sibling, Samuel Gaskill (Cumberland Probate Records, 5:331-337): "To my honored mother, Alice Gaskill, my three brothers, William, Jonathan and Silas, and to my three sisters Patience Aldrich, Provided Cook, and Olive Wilcos..my brother in law, Daniel Wilcox." Jonathan (4) Gaskill married Allls (sic) Pickering at Salem on 9 September 1726 (Salem MA VRs., 3:406). She was born at Salem on 19 November 1703, daughter of Benjamin and Jane (Hobby) Pickering (Salem MA VRs, 2:170). Jonathan's birth was not recorded but was mentioned in the will of his father, Samuel (3) Gaskill.."I ordaine my wife Bethiah Gaskill and my Son Jonathan Gaskill to be my Executors" (Essex Probate #10680). Samuel (3) Gaskill married Bethia Woodin, an unrecorded daughter of John (1) and Mary Woodin. Her identity and marriage is proved by the administration of the estate of John Woodin to "Samll Gaskill of Salem who marryed Bethiah Daughter of ye Dec." (Essex Probate #157312). He was born 23:11m[January]:1663, son of Samuel (2) and Provided (Southwick) Gaskill (original Quaker records deposited at RI Historical Society). Samuel (2) Gaskill was baptized at Salem on 7:6m[August] 1639 (Records of The First Church in Salem, 17), son of Edward (1) Gascoyne/Gaskin/Gaskill. He married at Salem on 30:10m[December]:1662 Provided Southwick (Salem VRs., 2:406- Gaskin, Samuell and Provided Southwicke). She was baptized at Salem on 6:10[December]:1639, daughter of Lawrence (1) and Cassandra (Burnell) Southwick (Records of the First Church in Salem, 17). Morning All , Joel and for any interested Keith researcher, THe genealogy. KEITH: Collected Genealogies of Keith, Keath & Keeth Families in New England (1997, Gateway Press) was sent to me , by the author for the Mendon Historical Museum. It'll take Joan a little while to catch up with her mail , as she just left here to go back to PA. this afternoon after spending a week in the area. Tracie, perhaps you and Joan M. should get together on this line. :) . Hope this helps a little. Alice Subject: Re: Welcome Thanks for the welcome......regarding the National Aldrich foundation.....I think I have an Aldrich in my line. Seems there were many of them in this area. This couple, I suspect, went on to have my great-great-grandmother, Phoebe Wheelock JEWETT (married my Calvin JEWETT). Any help appreciated! Tracie (Gennette) Kinghorn

I'll see if I can find the book. Is this all on the Aldrich name?
Hi Joel: I don't find a death entry in the Mendon, MA vital records for James Keith, or his wife Mary (Hodges) Keith. I do find the entry for George Keith 12 Jan 1774 in his 57th years G.R.1 which is Old Cemetery, Mendon, MA. As for the children of James III and Comfort - daughter Rachel was also b. in Mendon 15 Apr 1728 Mendon, MA vr pg 109 dau Susanna b. 05 Mar 1725 Mendon, MA vr pg 109. Keith. I have been researching my family history for 5 years. I am a new list member. My Mendon connection started in about 1716. James KEITH II was born in Old Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA in 1669. His parents were the Rev. James & Susannah (EDSON) Keith. Rev. Keith was the first minister of that town. The Rev. had nine children, the oldest of whom was James Keith II. James II married Mary HODGES, daughter of Henry & Esther (GALLUP) Hodges, on 3 Sept 1695, at Bridgewater. Nahum Mitchell states in his book A History of Bridgewater (Reprint 1983, Heritage Books) that he and his family left Bridgewater in about 1719, however James' must have gone to Mendon about 1716, for his son George and two younger children, were born in Mendon in 1717 and after. > In the book KEITH: Collected Genealogies of Keith, Keath & Keeth Families in New England (1997, Gateway Press) Larry Keith reveals that James II was a Proprietor of Mendon, and on 26 Aug 1735, was chosen Moderator of the Proprietors' Meeting. I have gleaned some extracts from the Mendon Proprietors' Records, put online through David Blackwell's New England Books site, which I have not been able to access for several months (though I can't tell why?). These excerpts mention James Keith II only as a member of a team of surveyors in relation to land transactions in the town. Does anyone out there have access to this book, either online or in printed form? I would be most appreciative of copies of anthing relating to James Keith. > James & Mary Keith had the following children: At Bridgewater, James III (1696), Mary (1698), Gershom [Captain Gershom] (1701), Israel (1703), Faithful (1704), Esther (1707), Jane [Jean?] (1709), Simeon (1712), Job (1715)), and in Mendon, George b. 08 Jun 1717, d. 12 Jan 1774, "in his 57th year", in Mendon; Micah b. 01 Mar 1719/1720, m. Bathsheba BALLOU, 27 Jan 1742, [place?]; and Abigail b. about 1721, she married George ALDRICH on 19 Nov 1741 at Mendon. Is this perhaps the GEORGE ALDRICH mentioned in the last digest?James II died 21 Oct 1739 in Mendon, I have no records for his wife Mary Hodges Keith's death. > James Keith III and his wife, Comfort THAYER, were married in Uxbridge, on 17 May 1722, which is odd because their first child, Noah, was born on 10 Jun 1723, in Mendon. Their remaining children, beginning with Susanna in 1726/7, were all born in Uxbridge. James III died on 16 Nov 1770 in Uxbridge, and his wife Comfort d. 22 Aug 1775, aged 75 yrs. Does anyone have access to burial info for this couple? ently procured a copy of the Will & Inventory of James Keith III of Uxbridge. Quite a long one, and in very cryptic hand! I have managed to transcribe most every word though. If you stare at something long enough, it clicks. > James III & Comfort had eleven children, their tenth being a son, Comfort Keith. Comfort was born 06 Mar 1742/43 in Uxbridge. He married 1) Deborah NELSON, dau. of Nathaniel & Deborah, 31 Oct 1765, she died 7 Dec 1774 aged 32 yrs., probably of complications from childbirth. 2) Jerusha ALDRICH, dau of Jacob & Mary (FLETCHER) Aldrich, 3 Mar 1776 in Uxbridge. They had eleven children, all at Uxbridge, the fourth of whom was Warren Keith. > Warren was born on 08 Jun 1780 in Uxbridge. He married twice: 1) Jemima Merrifield, 24 Jul 1803, at Barre VT, she d. in childbirth, 08 Apr 1816 in Mendon. 2) Susan Parthenia MAYHEW WEST, 01 Jan 1818, at Mendon. She was a very mysterious woman! No one is quite sure if her maiden name was Mayhew or West. I believe it was Mayhew, and she married a West before she married Warren. Mr. West would have been her 1st husband, so Warren was the second. Their children were: at Mendon, Susan S. (1818), Julia M. (1819), Wealthy (1821), Drusilla L. (1822), Deliah E. (1823), Deborah E. (1824); and at Uxbridge, Simeon Doggett (1829), and Lyman W. (1830). Warren seperated from Susan and the children about 1834. He died 03 Jun 1839, in Steuben Co., NY. > Susan was not a woman who could abide long without a husband. Probably for financial as well as personal motives, she married again. She married Andrew Robinson, about 1839-1840, probably at Oakham, Worcester Co., MA. She appears under the 1840 census as Susan Robinson, head of household, with three of her children, Deborah, Simeon & Lyman. In the 1850 Census, Susan is listed as the head of household, with her daughter Julia EVERTON, widow of Ariel, and a 74 year old butcher named Caleb Adams. She managed not to marry him! She was 56 years old in this census. She died on 30 Nov 1855, and was buried in Upton by her children as: Susan P., widow of Andrew Robinson, and also of Warren Keith, d. Nov. 30, 1855. What a stroke of luck for me! Both husbands' names on the stone! > To wrap up, I will tell you that I recently found the website of the Mendon/Uxbridge Unitarian Universalist Church. While browsing through their site, I remembered that Simeon Doggett Keith, my gg-grandfather, was christened in Mendon. I was looking at the sucession of ministers when I found that a man named Rev. Simeon Doggett was a minister of the church in about 1819. I had always wondered where Simeon got such a unique name. Now I know! > I would love to have any comments or questions forwarded to this list or to me directly at [email protected] I would be happy to share more indepth info with anyone interested. And if anyone has additional info on any of these families, I would like to have it as well. > Genealogically, > Joel B.
