    3. Morning all Mendonites, Thanks all for taking a chance here on the Ma- Mendon list. We are growing daily. We were 55 members a few days ago. Hopefully it will grow, please spread the word about this great list. :) I want to take this opportunity to wish you all A Happy Easter and to our Friends and Cousins not celebrating this Holiday weekend, a safe and happy weekend also. It is Patriot's Day here in Ma. on Monday. the Marathon is run from Hopkinton Ma. to Boston. A big event here in Ma. I believe Ma. is the only state that celebrates this holiday. However it is a very Patriotic day also with many reenactments being done all over the state.. April 19th is the real holiday date.. but celebrated on Monday, as most holidays are now. Again all have a safe and happy weekend. and Thanks again all for being part of this Mendon Family. Alice List Mom

    3. Hi Tracie, I'm a little behind with reading all my email. Just wanted to let you know nice to hear from a "new" cousin. Aurilla's parents, Ebenezer and Tamar Allen Aldrich are my direct lines, too. Aurilla's sister, Lydia, b. 1799, Mendon, married my Gr-Gr-GrandPop Solomon PRATT on 21 Aug 1820, Mendon. Be happy to share any info I have on this Aldrich line. Just to mention, I have 4 different Aldrich lines back to our progenitor. 1. Re: [MA-MENDON] area lines
    2. Joan C. Miller
    3. Morning to all, As cousin Alice mentioned - she and I have the same lines from Benjamin and Phebe (Scott) Pickering - on down. So part of my roots have been posted, right Alice? My other lines in the area begin with Benjamin and Phebe's daughter, my Great-Grandmother Phebe Emma Pickering who married Ezra PRATT. Ezra & Phebe were living in Albion, RI when Phebe died in 1894. Ezra's father Solomon and Jonathan resided in Mendon. Jonathan b.1773, Mansfield, MA, married Abigail PHILLIPS, b.1776. Abigail's parents were John Phillips, b.1750, possibly in Taunton, MA and Abigail Williams. Have tried for over 10 years to find the parents of John PHILLIPS. To date, not a clue. Included in my Pratt lines, are the Nicholas White, Philip King, William Macomber families. From one of my Aldrich lines - family name include: Ezra ALLEN, b. 1747; d.1813; mar. Lucy MANN, b.1749. Would anyone have any information on this Lucy Mann? I have her father as Oliver Mann, b. 1718, which is documented, but no dates on her death or the death of Oliver. Oliver married Mercy ARNOLD. No dates, to date, on Mercy's vital records, but do have documentation she is from the Thomas Arnold line that married into the Parkhurst family. Would anyone have information on Joseph WOODWARD who married Mary PRAY? Their daughter Mary married my Richard Arnold, b. 1667; died 1745. I have some shared information on the Arnold and Woodward families which I'll be happy to share if anyone connects. Just let me know. Last, but not least, my any means, : There's my George ALDRICH, b.1716, Mendon, MA; d.1797, Mendon; mar.Aug 1735, Smithfield RI. to #1 Mary MERIAM, b. 1717/18, Lynn, MA, date of death ca.1740/41, ?Mendon. Alison, Alice and Sue R have shared information on this family to document most of these dates. Their son Charles, b. 1738, Mendon(vr); d.1773, Mendon; married a Mercy/Marcy. Would anyone have a connection to this Charles ALDRICH's wife? We think Charles died suddenly. His father George did not die until 1797. One of Charles sons, Pardon, b. 1773, married 1796 Rachel Drake. Might anyone connect to a Drake line? Their other son, Ebenezer Aldrich, my direct line, married Tamar Allen in 1795, her parents being Ezra and Lucy (Mann) Allen. Well, I told cousin Alice I'd ask a few questions. Hope I haven't overextended. Joan Reed Miller York PA ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 1. [MA-MENDON] CARRILL (of Salem) for Don
    2. Barbara Petty
    3. Don, I don't know if this is going to help you very much, but I'll copy all the footnotes that pertain to CARRILL of Salem. They don't really identify Abigail who m. TRASK. I looked for CARRILL in Savage which I have on CD113 but no CARRILLs were listed by him. There was one CARROLL, Anthony, Topsfield 1661 (oft. writ. Carol) and Catherine C. perhaps his dau. m. 14 Aug 1685, John WAITE of Ipswich. HISTORY OF SALEM, Vol. III (1671-1716):173 states "John Adams 1, Peter Fountain 1 and Nathaniel Carrill 1 (the 1s look like 2s on my copy which is smudged) were living in Salem in 1682". On Vol. III:117 one Nathaniel Carrill was living in Goodman Goulthrite's ward when he took the oath of allegience about 25 Mar 1678. The name Nath Carrill appeared on a petition dated Oct. 10, 1667 of planters living in Salem Village to the Gen. Court about military watches in Salem town. Vol. III:173-174 - Nathaniel CARRILL 1, was a yeoman; lived in Salem Village and Boxford; married Priscilla DOWNING in 1683; died in 1724; she survived him; children: 1. Elizabeth 2; m. 1. [MA-MENDON] TRASK & HOLBROOK
    2. Bryants
    3. According to the Settlement and Story of Oakham, Mass., Sarah (or Sally) TRASK was the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Barden) Trask, of Uxbridge. Sally was born 30 Nov 1789 - Oakham Town Clerk Records give birth place as Uxbridge. The 1850 census notes her birth place as Rhode Island. It was probably Smithfield, RI which was later part Uxbridge near the border according to the staff at the Uxbridge library. Sally TRASK married Henry HOLBROOK Jr. (Henry, Eliphalet Jr., Eliphalet, Peter, Thomas, Thomas) 24 Nov 1813 at Bellingham. Children Mary Burdin HOLBROOK b. 16 Apr 1817 at Bellingham James Trask HOLBROOK b. 25 Dec 1820 at Bellingham Sarah Ann HOLBROOK b. 11 Jun 1823 at Mendon 1850 Census at Oakham, Worcester Co. Henry Holbrook, age 59, farmer, $900, b. Mass. Sarah Holbrook, age 60, b. RI Abigail Holbrook, age 73, b. Mass. (an Aunt of Henry) Sarah (TRASK) HOLBROOK died at Oakham, 27 Apr 1870. She was aged 82 years, 5 months, and 27 days according to the Oakham Town Records. -------------------------------------- Sarah's father: Frederic TRASK b. 26 May 1752 at Smithfield, RI, son of Ebenezer and Sarah (Aldrich) TRASK. Frederic TRASK in 1790 lived in Smithfield, RI and in 1800, 1810 and 1820 in Uxbridge, MA. According to the various census records, there were probably at least five children born to Frederick and Sarah. It appears they had two sons. One son born before 1790 probably died young. Another son was born between 1800 and 1810. Sarah appears to be the oldest of five daughters. Four were born between 1790 and 1800. Another daughter may have been born between 1800 and 1810. Some may have died young as there are only two daughters listed in 1810. The border of Massachusetts and Rhode Island changed in those years and they may all be the identical location. Census of Colony of R.I. 1774. Trask, Frederick - 1 male over age 16 (by himself) Smithfield. Census 1790 1 male over 16; 1 male under 16; 2 females; no slaves. Smithfield. Census 1800 page 469. 2. Hit the "send" key a bit prematurely. John Brandon did the most definitive study and subsequent article on Hatevil (The American Genealogist, Volume 72: 263ff). He identified Hatevil as the son of Edmund and Elizabeth Nutter- Edmund being the younger brother of the Rev. Anthony Nutter whose will provided identifications. As yet, the identification of Anne, wife of Hatevil, has not been proven. I would recommend John's article though- extremely well done and thoroughly researched and documented. Jan Delorey

All three references agreed that the origins of "Yankee" are uncertain. It was first applied to anyone of old New England stock. In the "War Between the States" southerners used it for anyone north of the Mason-Dixon line but usually prepended the word "damn". Europeans & other nationalities use it to mean anyone from the U. S. Ref. #2 & #3 said the most popular belief about the origin of Yankee is that it came from the Dutch "Jan Kees" a variant of "Jan Kaas", which literally means "John Cheese", an ethnic insult applied by New Yorkers to Hollanders (cheese being a national product of Holland.) John Fennimore Cooper, author of "Deerslayer" believed that the Indians originally pronounced "English" as "Yengees", but there is no evidence to support it. The Scottish word "yankie" means a gigantic falsehood. The Dutch "Jahnke" is a diminutive form of "Jan" or "John". Jim Bullock Littleton, CO

    3. Peggy is right, Alice, the problem would not have been caused by using Outlook Express. And if it was a virus, it didn't come to you through mailing list. RootsWeb has very good filters that prevent viruses from coming through the list. Either the message was sent personally to you or it was just one of those rare "blips" that can be caused by some noise on the phone line. I want to emphasize this because no one should worry about getting a virus or other harmful contents in messages that come from RootsWeb mailing lists. I have subscribed to the listowners' mailing list for several years and there have been no cases ever reported in that time of list messages doing any harm to someone's computer. HTML can carry virus so you may want to check your computer for virus. Peggy

    3. Sorry folks. It may have been me with the html setting for my email. I've turned it off. It was preset that way and I just left it. Apparently the term "Blue Bellied Yankee" came about during or after the Civil War and referred to the blue uniform of northern soldiers. 3. Hi Jes, and all, Jes will check my data later on the Trask. Blue Bellied Yankee?? that's a new one. :) I wrote a short article in my Pick Gen. about the various known Yankee names. I'll zap it here, if it's of any interest to anyone?? Can anyone add anything ? Alice --------------- Blue-Blooded or Swamp Yankee: You have all heard of these two names, I'm sure, from your parents and grandparents. I always heard Blue-blooded Yankee as opposed to Swamp-Yankee. Is it because the elders truly believed they came from Royalty? Or was it because they believed there was no foreign blood in their veins? Yankee may have derived from the Dutch word "Janke" meaning John. The dictionary tells us Yankee is any American from the northern states or any soldier or his family who fought in the Revolutionary War. A few people have been researching the two titles, Blue- Blooded and Swamp Yankee, concluding that neither title is covered in any known sources. They even resorted to calling known Yankees in the area to help define the logic behind the two above stated names. The research proved fruitless, to any real solution, both written and verbal sources; However; a few definitions were volunteered, as follows. " The Swamp Yankee was a rural , southern New Englander, whose family dates back to the Revolution. One who is frugal, not wealthy; laconic, not wordy; self-reliant; earthy and proud." That defines our Pickering Line, very well, however the Blue- Blooded Yankee was never defined in either sources. A recent article in the Woonsocket Call, R.I. sent to me on the subject, does describe a Boston Brahmin Yankee. The article states; "The Boston Brahmin come from a wealthy, more sophisticated background than the Swamp-Yankee." also; the Swamp Yankee was defined as " A native who comes from a country background and takes a down-to-earth approach." Swamp Yankee pronounced: (Swomp Yangkee) Ref.Source: Mark Patinkin; article, 1989, Woon. 1. [MA-MENDON] would you know what this expression means?
    2. A cousin on the Sanders list writes Erastus was reputed to call himself a "Blue-bellied Yankee" whatever that means. Do you know? I had never heard that before as an expression.... but I have of course heard blue blooded... I hope it doesn't offend anyone... I just don't know what it means. When I read a good book and don't know what an expression means I have a bright graduate student and I ask him. He said the authors sometimes make them up as they go along. I know there are some names in the Ballou book that were given according to where someone lived or a nickname related to what they did as a hobby or occupation. Thanks, jes
