Hi Joan, Answer to second email. There are lots of things on the Worcester County web site but I am not aware that the index to the probate records is there. I'll check out this family first in the VRs to see what we find and then- when I get to AAS, I can check the Worcester County Probate Index to see if there is anything on file. That way, if there is, you will have a probate # to use when you write to the Registry of Probate. Now- remind me next week please? Hate to have this get lost in the papers here! Jan
Hi Joan, Ok- tackled the other email first- the Capron-Scot-Arnold-Spear-Hall info. First- found nothing in Mendon published VRs- also checked Wrentham as Bellingham was an early part of that (as well as Dedham but don't have access to those at our local library). So, all the information will be from: Vital Records of Bellingham, Massachusetts To The Year 1850, published at Boston MA in 1904. David and Sarah (Capron) Scott- can find no marriage nor intentions of marriage- did find seven children listed in the VRs: p. 57: Scott, David, son of David & Sarah, July 23, 1756 Ichabod (twin), November 10, 1767 Joanna, October 25, 1762 p. 58: Scott, Leah, February 1, 1765 Mary, February 26, 1754 Patience (twin), November 10, 1767 Sarah, September 22, 1760. p. 141: Scott, David, Jr. and Mrs. Sarah Arnold, int. Apr 21, 1781- the cite is PR1 which is a private record from Wight Diary 1755-1849 kept by Samuel Wight and his daughters now in possession of Town Clerk. p. 248 (deaths): Scot, David, Feb 1, 1782- cite is PR1 Scoott, David, Apr 28, 1846 - cite is PR 1 I found no entry for the death of a Sarah Scott under any variation of Scott. My sense is that David Scot, Jr. who married Sarah Arnold is probably the son of the senior David and Sarah- He would still use the designation, "Jr" since I presume it was his father who died the year following his marriage. However, without a probate record or definitive deeds- just a guess. On the Elizabeth Capron-Elkanah Spear-Seth Hall thing. I could only find the following: p. 146: Spear, Elisabeth, wid (int omits wid) of Cumberland and Seth Hall, widr (int omits widr), Dec 17, 1761. I would imagine that the missing marriages and children would be found in the RI records- again, we don't have these at our local library. If someone else does not have access to Arnold's records and can help, remind me so when I go to AAS again, I can check for you. Jan
Thanks Jan. I'm not sure if you once told me that there's a list of names for Worcester or Franklin County of probated or administrative records on a web site? I could be all wrong, but why I'm asking... The registrar of the Pilgrim John Howland Society, Judith Elfring also asked me if I knew anything about when and where Welcome SCOTT died... From Alices Pickering Genealogy, we know he was born abt 1768, possibly Bellingham,MA and we do have it documented that he mar. Phebe FREEMAN, 19 Dec 1799, Franklin,MA. We have listed 5 children, Patience; Willard; Vienna who mar. a Whitaker?;Phebe our direct line who mar. Benjamin Pickering and Olney. I'm thinking..... should I write to Worcester Court house, ask if a Welcome Otis SCOTT on file.... maybe around 1830-40? Would appreciate your in-put when you have a chance to respond. Hi Joan, I'll see if I can't drop by our library this morning and check out the Bellingham and Mendon VRs for you- According to my "Massachusetts Place Names", Blackstone was incorporated in 1845 as a town government from part of Mendon and later part of Blackstone was used to establish Millville. Anyway- will check out the names you listed and get back to you later today. Jan Delorey
CAPRON request Morning Joan and All Listers, Just quickly here as for VR'S , I am sadly lacking on this Capron/Scott line. However David SCOTT as far as I can see married only once Sarah CAPRON,, It was their son DAVID that married Sarah ARNOLD . I have the same data as you on Elizabeth Capron says she married El. Spear and 2nd Seth Hall. I haven't any dates either.. Sorry I can't be of more help..But hopefully all our Ma-Mendon list Cuzzies and friends will have some data to help us. :) Alice ------------------- > Capron (1660-1752)" and Philip Capron's brief account of Banfield > Capron's descendants. > Sarah, b.1732; mar. Good morning, As cousin Alice knows I've been trying to connect our Pilgrim John Howland line in order to register with their Society. Just received a letter asking about conflicts regarding the marriage or marriages of Sarah CAPRON, on p.8, #24, "The Descendants of Banfield Capron (1660-1752)" and Philip Capron's brief account of Banfield Capron's descendants. Sarah, b.1732; mar. David SCOTT and had 10 children. According to Frederick Holden's notation on p.8, David also married Sarah ARNOLD, 21 Apr 1781. However, Philip Capron states this Sarah had 9 children by David Scott of Bellingham, lost her husband when she was 60 yrs old and remained widow and was living in 1817 when he wrote his account. Can anyone help with which is correct? I wondered if the David who married Sarah ARNOLD may have been their son, David CAPRON, Jr. who was born 23 Jul 1756? Would anyone have vital records for Bellingham, Blackstone or possibly Mendon which may have a marriage for David and Sarah ARNOLD? The other concern is on the same page 8, #25, Elizabeth CAPRON, b.abt 1733.d.1798; m. Elkanah SPEAR 17 May 1750 and had 8 children. Philip CAPRON stated this Elizabeth mar. Elkanah Spear of Cumberland. They had 3 children, Elkanah died of small pos in the French wars in Canada and Elizabeth married for 2nd husband, Seth HALL of Bellingham. Again, if someone has vital records could you please check to see if Elizabeth married Seth HALL. Unfortunately, no date was given for their marriage. If and when time permits, would really appreciate any help with documenting or proving accuracy of above information. Thanks. Why Was George Washington refused Lodgings at the Ammidon Tavern in Mendon, Ma. :) Pres George WASHINGTON was inaugurated , as the 1st President , in New York City in 1789. Congress adjourned and Washington began his a tour of the states along the Eastern seaboard on Thursday, Oct. 15. 1789 . As far as can be found he was accompanied by Major Jackson, Mr. Bear, and 6 servants.. The President traveled in a very impressive carriage flanked by impressive uniformed Officers. (from Acc. of Sara Taft, written 1908) They spent the first night in a tavern in Rye, NY. proceeding to Fairfield CT. where they spent their first overnight in a New England state. From their they traveled to Stratford, CT. ferried across the Housatonic River and spent the night in Milford, CT. From there they proceeded to Brookfield, Ma. along the old POST Lane Road. to Boston, Ma. This is where the much talked about "Hancock Incident" took place. Gov. John Hancock was not on hand to greet the President , as he should have been. Many took this as a deliberate slight by the Gov. to the President of the US. The next day, Gov. Hancock called on the Pres. and pleaded ill health for this slight From Boston Washington's party went to NH. by way of Marblehead , Salem, Ipswich, Newburyport, and Andover , Ma. they also toured Haverill, Andover, Lexington,Watertown, Needham, Sherbon. Holliston. Milford, Mendon and Uxbridge in Ma. The tour lasted one month.. The new President planned to stay in Mendon, Ma. on Nov. 6th 1789 at the Inn owned by his old ARMY friend Philip Ammidon. However when the President and his entourage arrived, on a cold rainy Nov. day, Mr. Ammidon and his daughter were not at home .as they were out buying meat for the anticipated visit of Phillip's old friend, and Pres. of the Us. George Washington. From here the story varies according to who tells it. Some say a maid opened the door, as Mrs Ammidon was resting from so much preparation for the President's visit, and the maid when asked if they had the accommodations. . She replied "They were expecting someone very important and all the rooms were reserved". So the gentle person from Virginia turned and left and proceeded to Uxbridge, Ma. to the Taft Tavern where the President and his party were gladly welcomed. Another versions is that the wife answered the door and not the maid and misunderstood and thought the "Title " Pres. meant an Educator and she was to ill to accommodate them? Washington's own version is " that the owner of it being from home , and the wife sick, we could not gain admittance" Well, whoever answered the door, they refused George Washington lodging for the night, at the Ammidon Tavern in Mendon, Ma. . Upon Mr. Ammidons return home and he heard of this error , he and his daughter quickly jumped back io their horses and rode to the Taft Tavern to fetch his old friend and bring him back to Mendon.. However the Pres. was in bed and did arise to greet his old friend. However he was very comfortable and he would not return to Mendon. Col Ammidon naturally was mortified about this big misunderstanding , but the Pres. was even joking with Ammidon's daughter . There are a few excerpts in George Washington's diary about his stay in Uxbridge. Also there is a letter written by Pres. Washington to the Taft Tavern's Inn keeper Samuel Taft and his family..and writings of Sara Taft.. They all tell more about the Pres. visit. Sources: 1. Hi Alice and all... Got my p/c back. Was told had something to do with jamming my windows. And could have been any number of reasons why it jammed. So happy no bugs, no crash. And now have McAfee virus protection. Was also told suppose to look at windows update once a week. I never did that. And I did find out that google is not a misspelled word for goggles. So I learned a few new things. Went with a local company for internet and new email address. But keeping juno for awhile. Now I have to learn how to use this Outlook. Hope to put a few queries on here re my Aldrich and Merriam lines after I do catch up with my emails. Thanks for listening. Hi All, Tradition has it that Ammidon /Amadowne etc. is a French Huguenot name. Philip Ammidon was the first known owner of the Ammidon Tavern in Mendon. (ca 1770) . This building is still standing in Mendon at 2 Main St. It is very famous for having refused George Washington lodgings. And one of Mendon's Historic Buildings. Philip's wife was Silvia TAFT; He was the son of Ichabod and Margery Aldrich d/o Jacob and Margery Hayward. Margaret or Margery Aldrich Ammidon was b. 14 Mar 1714, and died in 1753; (Amidon Gen, by Frank Best; ) Mendon VR d. 7 Oct. 1767, ae 53 and Bur, in Old Cemetry in Mendon. Alice

Morning All Mendonites. Thank you Rose. Yes it is a friendly list and hopefully we all aim to keep it this way. :) In my welcome message I did say that Chat is allowed. All I ask is that the subject say Chat, or at least cover the subject content. .. Then busy people can delete, any messages upon receiving them.. I have Moderated really large list, which hopefully this Ma-Mendon will become one day, also.. And they ran very smoothly with Chat, threads and sharing. No FLAMES will be allowed. I will unsubbed anyone after a warning that flames another lister. Genealogy comes first , of course!!!!!! However , list have slow seasons.. Spring , esp. this time of year is a slow time on all list.. Folks thoughts turn to outside work, spring cleaning, vacations , etc. As soon as the real summer heat sets in, all are back "In House with A/C on " and back to their computers. A friendly list is a good list. so let's all try and keep this new Ma- Mendon one . a friendly, family one. Newbees to list and computers oft make errors, in their queries and oft send, old hoax virus warnings, and other old hat issue messages. Hopefully , we can just handle this with a friendly reply. However a legitimate warning is acceptable on this list . I belong to a " Roots Web list owners list." They pass on all problems about list . new viruses, Rootsweb policies and etc. >From time to time, I will pass along to the list, any thing that might be helpful to all. I do ask no politics or religion be discussed, unless it is genealogy related. ( in our ancestors times ) A holiday of any kind is meant to wish our family and friends a Happy whatever Day.. and who better to wish a happy day to than our Mendon Family, whom we share and are close too all year long.. Again the subject line should state the messages content.. and speaking of too wordy messages, this is one. :) You all have a nice day. cool & breezy in Ma. Hi-just wanted to say that I'm glad this is such a friendly list! I am on quite a few, and it seems that any time there is an off- topic post, whether its holiday greetings or virus warnings-there s a follow-up flurry of hissy fit postings about what is or is not appropriate! Hope you all had a nice mothers day!! Rose "They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist---" Last words of union General John Sedgwick, shot in battle 1864

I spent my day at the Brimfield Fair. It was my second trip there. I went once when I was 15. That was 21 years ago. I found a photo of a Laura R. Spinney and her husband _____ Staurt. I wonder if they are related to my mohters family. I didnt buy it because I had no clue. I did buy some dishes and flatware. I had fun in the brutal sun. Tim Clifford
Alice and all -- I will be gone for 9 days also -- I'm going to the National Genealogical Society Conference in Portland, OR, where I will also visit family and friends. I'll be gone from May 14 to 22. I think I'll stay on the list -- but, obviously, I won't be responding to anyone during that time. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL OF YOU WHO ARE MOTHERS! Sue Roe
