    1. [MA-MENDON] The new message system
    2. W. David Samuelsen
    3. So Alice and Jim are/were on the same mailing I am still on, plowing through more than 1600 messages. They already saw my responses and assistance to others trying to stay on top. Right now the new system is off line so programmers are loading up the glitch fixes - AND moving boards around to proper places. They took my Germany, Luxembourg and Saarland boards out to move to their new place. I am waiting for the system to get back online so I can re-bookmark the sites. And since I have been admin of Aldrich boards since the beginning, I am admin of the new Aldrich board. In reality - it is the surname boards taking in the most, because Ancestry.com -AND- Myfamily.com message boards are heavy of surname groups and NO admins while the GenConnect boards have adminstrators. I wounded up with more than 500 messages absorbed into the new RW message board. I will be checking through those messages and find the inappropriate ones to delete. The delightful feature of the new message board is one called "Admin Info" (request made to change it to "Welcome Information") Each board has one. Basic information is name of administrator and his/her email listed. Additional information is added by the board admin. Can even add photographs. Another feature of the new system, you can attach gedcoms, photo or text files. Even put in your personal website address in the message without much ado. Another feature, the email addresses are eaily updated globally, meaning when you log in to post - you are in effect update all your posts with your current address each time. We won't have to deal with bounced, invalid or warped addresses anymore. Gateway glitch is being fixed. A good number of mailing lists were gatewayed to old GC system and for some reason were not working in new system. W. David Samuelsen

    2. Jim, I have both a Blackman marriage (Keziah, daughter of John and Mary of Glocester RI) and Bullock marriages with a Ford line from William of Smithfield RI- who removed at the end of the 1700's to Grafton, Grafton County, New Hampshire. If you are interested in these, let me know. Jan Delorey

    1. RE: [MA-MENDON] Re: Bullock-Blackman
    2. Jim Bullock
    3. Thanks, Jan, for the Blackman & Bullock information. "Blackmar" is often shown as "Blackman" in some of the transcriptions. I think it was primarily because of the transcriber's difficulty in distinguishing between an "n" and an "r". The old handwriting often made them look alike. I do have Keziah, b. 2 Jun 1756 in Glocester, RI, dau. of John (?-ca 1791) and Mary (Mitchell) (ca 1715-?) Blackmar. In his will of 28 Jan 1783, proved 20 Aug 1791, "John Blackman of Scituate" refers to his wife Mary; sons "Theophilus & Amaziah Blackman"; and daus. "Keziah Fords, Lucretia Blackman, & Mary Colegrove". I don't know a thing about Mary Mitchell other than her marriage 2 Aug 1741 in Glocester to John. The marriage records refer to him as "John Blackmar, Jr.". The parents of John Jr. were John Sr. & Jemima (Kenney) Blackmar. John Sr. was the son of James (the immigrant) & Mary (Hawkins) Blackmar. James may have been the brother of William Blackmar of Scituate. I also don't have anything on Keziah's husband, Mr. Ford. But I'm still working on the line, so I may find more. I do have one Bullock-Ford marriage: Richard Ford & Phebe^6 (David^5, Joseph^4, Richard^3, Samuel^2, Richard^1 Bullock), but no data for Richard. 1. [MA-MENDON] Old GenConnect & FamilyHistory Boards
    2. Jim Bullock
    3. Alice, Like you, I have been swamped going through approximately 1500 messages since Thursday afternoon on the board administrators' mailing list. Most people don't have the time or patience to wade through that mess, so the same questions and comments are being repeated over & over again. I have seen a significant slow-down today though--I guess because many people had to go back to work today. I'll admit that the procedure for combining the old GenConnect and FamilyHistory query boards was not well implemented, but I'm in favor of the overall goal and will like to have the ability to see all of the messages in one place. I'm the administrator for two surname boards: Bullock & Medbury. In the case of Bristol Co., MA, I have the mailing list but not the query board. (But I do work with the Bristol co. board admin.) It's amazing how resistant some people are to change. Some of them are making wild accusations about Amazon.com trying to sell the info on CD ROMS. Some think they're harvesting email addresses for spamming purposes. And there is the matter Alice mentioned about them taking away people's copyrights. Others said that they deliberately put bugs in the system to discourage admins so they can do away with them altogether. It's really wild! But, like Alice said, they're getting the kinks worked out. Those poor programmers and support folks have hardly had any sleep since the Thursday announcement of the new system. The only way any of this will affect a mailing list is if a "gateway" is opened between the corresponding query board. The admins of both the board and the list have to open their ends of the gateway which results in copies of messages to the board being copied to the list. So if there is a gateway between a Mendon board and the Mendon mailing list, messages posted to the board will be copied to the list. People can access the boards through RootsWeb, ancestry.com, or MyFamily.com. Anyone can read the board messages, but in order to post to the boards, they must sign up for an account (if they don't already have one.) Of course many of us already had accounts for the Ancestry databases and/or census records, so nothing new is required of us. Alice, I've seen a slowdown of messages on the MA & RI state mailing lists also. I think it is just the normal vacation time slump. On another subject--I am currently working on transcribing Blackmar/Blackmer/Blackmore data from two old manuscripts, plus checking them against VRs, wills, etc. This family, though most were from RI, did marry with some of the Mendon names we have been discussing. If any of you have any information or questions on this surname, I'd like to hear from you. Jim Bullock Littleton, CO

    1. [MA-MENDON] Rootsweb vs. Ancestry , Com
    2. Alice Palladini;
    3. Morning All Listers, Our Ma- Mendon list has been sooo slow. :( Hopefully it's not because of the change over from Rootsweb to Ancestry.Com I have been keeping abreast of all that has been going on with the BOARDS and the LIST. There is NO change at present with the list only the BOARDS. It was a disaster beginning however many kinks and bugs have been settled in just a few days. And I am sure all will be in the next week or so. So do not be afraid . at present. to post to the list, or any Rootsweb list. I would suggest you wait a week or two before posting to any name or locale BOARD, till all the kinks are out. Your post of any work that you have compiled or any material posted to the list, is still YOUR work and owned by you. Rootsweb nor Ancestry.com are NOT claiming any copyrights to your work. So please do not let this error message of a few days ago, stop you from queries and replies and or sharing any data with the list members. I have plowed through over 1000 e mails concerning the new BOARDS and the new owners of Rootsweb. I do not claim to know all the answers. But can assure you , your postings are safe on the list. I'll try and answer any questions, not sure I'll have a ll the answers, However, I'll try if anyone has any. Also others on the list own other list and Boards and may be able to help with any questions or add to this message about the change over. also. Davis S. , Jim B. to name a few might have a few comments here also. Any help appreciated on this subject. Just thought I'd update you all, on the change over. You all have a nice day, and let's get the list back to busy. :) Alice List Mom . [email protected] - Message From Massachusetts

    1. [MA-MENDON] Aldrich
    2. While working on a family who removed to Grafton, Grafton County, New Hampshire, I encountered the Aldrich name among some of the Grafton NH grantees, dated 14 August 1761: Solomon Aldrich, Samuell Aldrich, Jonathan Aldrich. On the regrant of the charter in 1769, the following name: Abner Aldrich. Some other familiar names were: Silas Gaskill, Jonathan Gaskill, Jonathan Buffum, Jedediah Buffum, Nathaniel Taft, Simon Davis, John Holbrook, Moses Holbrook, Ephraim Taft. Complete listings and more information on the town of Grafton, Grafton County, NH are found in State of New Hampshire, Town Charters Granted Within the Present Limits of New Hampshire, Albert Stillman Batchelor, editor, Concord, 1895, Volume 25, page 33 following. 2. Rose, What I meant were the Grantor (the person selling the land) and Grantee (person buying the land) Index Books. These volumes are in alphabetical order and a quick way to determine the actual volume and page # of the deed in which you are interested. My experience, in other counties, has been that the Office of the Register of Deeds has been willing to photocopy those pages and send them on to me. From those, I determined which deeds I wanted and requested photocopies by volume and page number. Now, I don't want to promise that Worcester County would do the same. And, if you can access the microfilm through LDS, that really is the shortest way between two points. Good luck! Jan D.

    3. Thanks to all who responded to my question about finding a deed-I got some good suggestions off the list, as well, and for anyone else who wants to do this I was advised that the deeds are probably on microfim and can be ordered through the FHC, or, I could try writing to the registrar of deeds again, and this time ask for the form that had the grantor/ grantee on it. (I'm not sure exactly what thats about, but as long as the registrar knows-good enough!) Rose

    3. Peggy -- Thank you for your consideration in explaining your letter. As far as I know, we have no reason to be corresponding. I do have Family Tree Maker and am an amateur genealogist but the family names you mention are not among those I'm researching. "My" surnames are Davenport, Plummer, Vail and Walker.

    3. Hello everyone This is Peggy Ann Vipond and I am changing my e-mail from [email protected] to [email protected] Your name is in my address book for some reason. Outlook Express puts everyone that I respond to in my address book so maybe you are just there because I asked or answered a ? of you on a mailing list like Family Tree Maker. If that is the case if you let me know will delete your name from book. (I wish Outlook did not do that) Many of you is because we have talked on family history. Bartlett, Kurpies, Wood, Volesky, McGregor. I am sorry to intrude like this but it would take forever to send a separate e-mail to each of you. I do not want to lose a contact due to changing address. I just received an e-mail from a person I had contact with in 1999 that had just made the connection to my tree. Hope you are all well Peggy

    1. Re: [MA-MENDON] Probate Records
    2. Joel, Worcester Co. Probates have been filmed and are available from LDS or from the Worcester Co. Records office if you go there to search yourself. The only difficulty is that you have to search several rolls of film to find all the parts of a particular probate. I have done this successfully in Salt Lake City. I imagine it would be a bit more complicated if you have to order all the films one after the other -- hoping all the time that you are getting the right ones. If you are not living near Worcester Co. or Salt Lake City, you may want to hire someone to do it for you. Sue

    1. [MA-MENDON] Probate Records
    2. Joel Keith
    3. I am hoping someone will be able to assist me in locating a probate record for one of my ancestors. It concerns my James Keith II. He was a son of the Rev. James Keith of Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA. He was born (allegedly) on 05 Dec 1669 in Bridgewater. He married Mary Hodges on 03 Sept 1695 in Bridgewater. He moved his family to Mendon about 1719, after his father passed away. He died 21 Oct 1739, age 70 yrs. as recorded in the "VR of Mendon to 1850" Book. Herein lies the dilemna. I have the will and inventory of the Rev. James Keith I (from Plymouth Co. Probates). I also have the will and inventory of James Keith III (from SAMPUBCO). I am wondering where I might find the probate records of James Keith II. I have seen no entry in the SAMPUBCO site regarding any other James Keith's will than the one I have. Is there a resource for Worcester Co. Probates that would include wills from 1739? I would appreciate any help in tracking down these records. Thanks in advance, Joel B. Does anyone know of another way to find a deed, that doesn't involve much money? Thanks, Rose

    2. W. David Samuelsen
    3. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aldrich/george/index.htm more than 500 added. I haven't added those from the emails yet. Faster if they are already in gedcoms and sent to me virus-free attached. If you are sending gedcoms, be sure they are not ancestral type. Descendant format is preferred for this type of database. Do not add anyone already in database. Only those from the starting person (ancestor) and descending from that one person already in database. This will make the merges easier. I reserve the right to edit the information to conform to the format set in the database. No ?? in surname space places spelled out in full, county included if known. No "co. or county" please. Place names are as followed: , Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts not Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts for church - list the full name of the church if possible. If not include in the notes so I can modify. For the name of cemetery, list like this: Swansdale Cemetery, Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts. This will go long way in reducing my time editing to fit overall database. The database itself when completed can be converted to book with ease. Hence the need for overall format standard. W. David Samuelsen
