I can give you some data on Noah Ballou: Noah was the son of Nathaniel and Mary (Lovett) Ballou. He was born in Wrentham,(now Cumberland,RI) Ma. on 31 Aug 1728. Noah married 1st Abigail Razee (daughter of Joseph) on 17 Oct 1750 at Cumberland R.I. Arnold's Vol. 3, Part 5, pp. 9 and 54.They had 11 children. Abigail died 10 Sep 1794 ae 69. (Also, The Ballous in America, pp 85 and 86.) They werre married by Job Bartlett, J.P. Noah married (2) Mrs. Abigail Cook ,widow of Daniel Cook of West Wrentham, Ma. on 7 July 1796. Arnold's V.R. of Rhode island Vol. 3, part 5, pp 10 and 24. Her maiden name was Blackmore (according to the Ballou Genealogy). They were married by Abner Ballou. No issue. In the Ballou Burying Ground, the inscription reads:" " In memory of Noah Ballou, who died March 20, 1807, in the 79th year of his age. He had been a member of the Baptist Church 39 years. His 2d wife and widow d. Sept. 18, 1808, aged 65 years." These are dates from Cumberland records, but the dates don't jibe with what I have seen on your emails. Do we have Daniel Cooks mixed up? Norma
Morning All Listers, Welcome Max to the Ma. Mendon list. Max: this Ahaz Cook has been a mystery for many years. I have had queries in the past about him and could never find his parents. Hopefully someone on the list has an answer for you, as at present , his lineage, to me, anyway , is as much a mystery , as he is to you. If that is his death in the Ma. VR'S ?? s/o Esaius. Others I know thought maybe this was a bad misspelling of the father's name?? You wrote me earlier that perhaps he was the s/o Joseph or Jacob Cook and a Mary Pickering?? I checked this and can not find anything that I have in my data. Although I do have a few dangling Mary's. Phil and other Munchies on the list, any clues on this Ahaz?? I did not check HRC as the print is too small for a thorough search. Could someone check HRC for Ahaz, please?? (HRC= H. Ruth Cook news articles ) Max do you have any other tidbits on Ahaz that might help in a search?? Hope you all had a great holiday. Hi Alice, My wife and I appreciate your three messages. Maurine, my wife, will subscribe to the list, since Ahaz is her ancestor. Recently we met a cousin, a decendant of Ahaz Cook, who provided the following information: Ahaz Cook, b 19 Jul 1790 at Mendon, MA, son of Joseph or Josiah Cook and Mercy Pickering. Joseph Cook, b 23 Jan 1760 at Cumberland, RI, son of Hezekiah Cooke and Rachel Atwood. Hezekiah Cooke, b abt 1724, son of Elder Josiah Cooke and Mary. Josiah Cook, b 1691, son of Nicholas Cooke and Joanna Rockwood. Nicholas Cooke, b 9 Feb 1660 at Weymouth, MA, son of Walter Cooke and Experience Holbrook. Walter Cooke, b 25 May 1618 at Leeds, England, son of Walter Cooke and Mrs. Walter Cooke. It is believed that Ahaz Cook is a brother to Samuel Cook, b. abt 1788 at Mendon, d 1812 at Army-Greenbrush, NY. Samuel was killed in the War of 1812 and Francis Cook b abt 1793 at Mendon. Alice, thanks for the information on places to stay. Jim Bullock referred us to the list and he also suggested Quaker Motor Lodge in Uxbridge. We are planning to stay there and use that as a base when we go to Boston. Jim suggested that we take a train into Boston and we are planning to do that. We certainly will contact you when we get to Mendon. That should be in late September or early October. Best regards, Max & Maurine -- in Arizona
Ahaz Cook was born in Mendon in 1790. It is believed he died there in 1840. He married Mercy Walling in 1818 in Mendon. Does anyone have a conection. Also, my wife and I will be coming to Mendon on a genealogy vacation in Sept/Oct. Any tips on places to go and places to stay will be appreciated. Best regards, Max -- in Arizona
Hi Listers This was sent to me last year and I think well worth repeating here. Happy & Safe Holiday to ALL Alice ................ I AM THE UNITED STATES I was born on July 4, 1776, and the Declaration of Independence is my birth certificate. The bloodlines of the world run in my veins because I offered freedom to the oppressed: I am the United States of America. I am 250 million living souls and have the ghosts of millions who have lived and fought and died for me. I am Nathan Hale and Paul Revere. I stood at Lexington and fired the shot heard around the world. I am Washington, Jefferson, and Patrick Henry. I am John Paul Jones, the Green Mountain Boys, and Davy Crockett. I am Lee, Grant, and Abe Lincoln. I remember the Alamo, the Maine, and Pearl Harbor. When freedom called, I answered and stayed until it was over, over there. I left my heroic dead on the bleak slopes of Korea and Vietnam--in Flanders field, the rocks of Corregidor, and the desert sands of Kuwait. I am the Brooklyn Bridge, the wheat fields of Kansas, the granite hills of Vermont. I am the coal mines of the Virginias and Pennsylvania, the fertile lands of the West, the Golden Gate and the Grand Canyon. I am Independence Hall, the Monitor, the Merrimac, and the Challenger. Oh, yes - I am big. I sprawl from the Atlantic to the Pacific - 3 million square miles of land throbbing with industry. I am more than 2 million farms. I am forest, field, mountain, and desert. I am quiet villages and cities that never sleep. You can look at me and see Ben Franklin walking down the streets of Philadelphia with his bread loaf under his arm. You can see Betsy Ross with her needle. You can see the lights of Christmas and hear the strains of "Auld Lang Syne" as the calendar turns. I am Babe Ruth and the World Series, 170,000 schools and colleges, and more than 300,000 churches where my people worship God as they choose. I am a ballot dropped into a box, the roar of a crowd in a stadium, the voice of a choir in a cathedral. I am an editorial in a newspaper and a letter to Congress. I am John Glenn and Neil Armstrong and their fellow astronauts who whirl through the spaces above my head. I am Eli Whitney and Stephen Foster, Tom Edison, Albert Einstein and Billy Graham. Yes, I am the nation and these are the things that I am. I was conceived in freedom and, God willing, in freedom I shall spend the rest of my days. May I always possess the integrity, the courage and the strength to keep myself unshackled, to remain a citadel of freedom and a beacon of hope for all the world. AUTHOR UNKNOWN.
Janet MM The cite for the marriage of Joseph Bassett and Alice Sprague is Smithfield VRs., 1:71. I don't have the ancestry for either Joseph or Alice- nor descendants other than William- my interest was Margery White so I only provided the parentage of her husband and a correction on his identity. The birth of Margery (White) Basset was shown under Basset, w. of William, 16th day, 10th mo 1754 "cr4" which is the Uxbridge Monthly Meeting in the Vital Records of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, page 29- Her death is also given in the same VRs of Uxbridge, page 357 as Basset, Margery, w. of William, 18th day, 8th mo. 1791. The birth of William Basset is also given in the same cite, no parents given- 29th day 10th mo 1747 (Uxbridge VRs, 29). With the possible exception of the last two, the records on the other children of William and Margery (White) Basset originated from the Uxbridge Monthly Meeting. VRs of Uxbridge, page 29 lists the following (not in chronological order): Basset: Artimus, 19th day, 6th mo 1782 Cyrus, 31st day, 3d mo. 1779 Daniel, 19th day, 12th mo 1784 Ellis, 2d day, 7th mo, 1787 Lydia, 31st day, 8th mo, 1780 Martha, 16th day, 7th mo 1789 William, 13th day, 8th mo 1791 - died 14th day, 3d mo 1792 (VRs., page 357). From Margery's death date of 18:8m:1791, looks as though she died shortly after giving birth to young William. Hope this is of some help to you. Jan D.
Hello to Jan and all, I only found this message service last month but it has already been very helpful! I would certainly appreciate any references that you have about ancestors and descendents of Joseph and Alice (Sprague) Bassett. You have already provided me with one new piece of information: their marriage date. Janet Marshall Morris [email protected]
I do believe the heat, if not the humidity, is softening my brain...but...do I recall that there was some chat about a Margaret/Marjorie Bassett earlier? I do have this information for anyone who might find it useful: Samuel (5), son of Thomas (4) and Deborah (Read) White, [Joseph (3), Joseph (2) Thomas (1)] WHITE by his second wife Abigail Adams (born at Holliston 4 March 1726/7, daughter of Isaac and Martha (Vose) Adams) had a daughter Marjorie, born at Mendon on 6 October 1754 and died at Uxbridge on 18:8m[August]:1791. Marjorie appeared as "Margaret Basset, late Margaret White" in the estate record of her brother Aremas White- she having married at Smithfield on 2 July 1778 William BASSETT. He was born on 29:10m[December]1747, son of Joseph and Alice (Sprague) Bassett, and died at Richmond New Hampshire on 9 January 1841. In the History of Richmond [NH}, the author William Basset identified William as the son of Joseph and Eunice (Hacket) Basset of Lynn but the "Smithfield Friends Record- Marriages" calls him William, son of Joseph and Ellis Basset of Glocester when he made a second marriage with Ruth Harkness. Thus, he was obviously the son of Joseph Basset of Glocester, Rhode Island who married at Smithfield on 7 January 1747 Alice Sprague of Smithfield. If this is anyone's line, I would be glad to give the documentation for all of the above. As an aside, the identification of the children of Joseph (5) White was provided by the distribution of the estate of his son Artemas White of Pomfret, CT on 8 December 1787- Some of his siblings were not previously recorded - presumably in birth order they were: Adams White, Samuel White, Barak White, Margaret Bassett formerly White, Antipas White, Nathan White, Abigail White and Ahaz White. Hi Again all Listers and Peggy Was wondering if anyone had the Wrentham VR's to look up these two Damaris BARTLETT d.o John and DAMARIA BARTLETT d/o Jacob. I know Alison Franks has them however she is still without a computer, and one of my sources say Chart Alison Franks. I also have both in my data and both married to Obidiah BALLOU. However I have Ezekial b. 5 Jan. 1718/19 , Wrentham, Ma. (Wrentham VR's:?) Married in Smithfield and died in Cumberland R.I. Guess I need some corrections here also, on which Damaris./Damaria did Obidiah marry?? Hi Again, Janet MM.. This is what I could find on this family..I did not check Mar. of Children.. Can do if your Interested. (see below) >From deductions I see both Samuel and Hannah are not real young when had their 1st child.. Hannah abt. 32. if d. at 72 as VR states. Which leads one to think she could have been married prior?? I checked all my source and find no Hannah Read/Reed that mar. a Comstock. I see they did name their last son John Read Smith. and first son Woodbery. (This could be a clue that Hannah was mar, before ?? to Woodbery Comstock and her miden name Read??) Does your mother have any sources on her work or any clues?? I am sure this would be a great correction in this couples history and lineage and also another correction in GAG's. Sorry: I cannot find this family of Jesse Ballou in the Adin Ballou "Elaborate History...." book. Perhaps he is one of the addendum books? Jean
Hi Jean I was wondering about another source for the marriage. We have Damaris Bartlett born 1691 married to Obadiah Ballou as you say below We have her as child of Jacob Bartlett and Sarah Albee instead of John. Jacob is child of John Bartlett and Sarah Aldrich It is neat that Ezekiel was born on the anniversary of their marriage. What seems strange to me is that it was 2 years later. Or is this a double date problem. -----Original Message----- From: Betty Sullivan [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, June 29, 2001 4:58 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MA-MENDON]BULLOCKS Alice and Jim, Well, it looks like Jim has blown a couple of holes in my research on Richard BULLOCK, but until I look up my original sources on him, I'm not willing to concede that he's right on all points. . . . ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ If anyone went through my 19,000-name GEDCOM with a fine-tooth comb, I'm sure they could find some significant problems. And I know I have some poorly documented "facts". But that's why I have put it on RootsWeb's WorldConnect (with all of my sources & notes.) I get feedback every week on my data. Most of it is requests for more information, but I also get additions and corrections which I always welcome. If anyone wants to check it out, go to the WorldConnect homepage at http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ and enter "jbbullock" in the box by "Database", then click "GO" below it. Then you can search specific names and when you find one you're interested in, you can see his or her pedigree or descendant charts. Clicking on any individual's name will show you his or her family sheet with notes & sources. Some of the older sources of information must be used with caution. One of the sources for some of the misinformation about Richard Bullock is an article by Hon. J. Russell Bullock published in the "National Genealogical Society Quarterly" in January 1917. He refers to the 1643 list of Rehoboth proprietors and says that the Governor's lot was assigned to Richard Bullock. What he neglected to say is that the original 1643 document mentions only the Governor's lot and did not include Richard's name. It was an amended document written several years later that shows the changes that were made in lot assignments, including Richard's lot. [See Bowen's "Early Rehoboth"] Another error made by J. R. Bullock was in saying that Richard's estate was valued at £200. (The estate evaluation was one of the factors that determined how much land an individual received.) However that amount was the value of the Governor's estate as recorded in the original document. No estate evaluations were given for the "newcomers" who received their lot assignments at later dates. Note that some other sources say that the £200 amount was how much Richard paid for the lot. That was at a time when £15 or £20 was being paid for home lots! Others use this amount to show that Richard came from a well-to-do family. However, he just as well could have come as someone's servant. (That could explain why there is no earlier record of his being in New England.) There is little doubt though that he was an educated man since he held the post of Town Clerk in Rehoboth. In general the NGS Quarterly article has some helpful information, but there are more factual errors and questionable statements, so one should try to find more up-to-date information where possible. There are two other respected genealogical journals that cause some additional confusion about Richard--specifically about his age. The Mayflower Descendant, vol. IX, p. 30, states that on 8 Jun 1648 "Richard Bullock aged twenty six years or therabouts Testifyeth . . .. " But the "New England Historical and Genealogical Register", vol. 4, p. 288, states "Richard Bullock, aged 25 yrs., testifies . . .." Since I haven't seen the original document, I can't say which is correct, but I use the statement in the MD article because it is given as an exact quote. But note that in those years, if they said they were about 26, they often meant that they were in their 26th year--in other words, 25 going on 26. Jim Bullock Littleton, CO
