Dear Nadine, Thank you for offering to send the scan of the plaque to all who want it. I certainly do, and greatly appreciate it. Also, thanks to Margie. Thanks Alice! I'm going to have fun exploring this! Sue God Bless America! Susan Marie Hillier Roe SueMHR@aol.com Seal Beach, CA
Thanks Margie! I wasn't aware of that site -- and it is a great one! Sue God Bless America! Susan Marie Hillier Roe SueMHR@aol.com Seal Beach, CA
I'm brand-new on this Mendon list, having just subscribed within the last week, so bear with me if you all are already aware of this. But, in case there's other newbies here, I just found a valuable website. It has pictures of the gravestones in "Old Cemetery" in Mendon, Mass. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/%7Emwhaynes/index.html I clicked on "Hopestill Read" and it gave me a good photo of her grave, plus some of her family information. (daughter of William Holbrook & Elizabeth Pitts, wife of Samuel Read, Sr) Lots of RAWSON grave photos!
Hi Again, If anyone is interested in other photos of Mendon and Founders Park Monument also.. Go to: http://www.wellswooster.com/tommies/ zap on tidbits then Nancy Thompson Photo album.. Any Thompson related lister will find a great deal of info on these pages, also. Happy Hunting, Alice
Thanks Margie -- I'll send it on in just a minute!
Frank is right that Heritage Quest is available through many local libraries. Check to see if your library has a subscription to it. If so, then you can access their thousands of books and the U.S. Federal Censuses online in your own home using your local library card. But...if your library does NOT have a subscription to Heritage Quest, and you want to access this wonderful resource, you can pay $35 and receive a library card from www.godfrey.org, which will allow you instant access. The Godfrey Library has great, personalized customer service. And $35 is not a lot of money for this amount of genealogical records. Heritage Quest (www.heritagequestonline.com) has the censuses, although they aren't all indexed. 1870 & 1910 are indexed, unlike Ancestry.com. Heritage Quest has a long list of Vital Records of Massachusetts books online, including the one for Mendon. Usually schools, libraries, etc., subscribe to it. second, access it through your library. My local county library subscribes to it as one of the databases available on their website. I have to type in my library barcode number as the password, but then it is all there. I can access it from the library or from home. It was also available through the school library when my daughter was in high school, but it is not available through her college library. I used to work at a different college than the one my daughter attends and it was available through that college's library. So, it may be kind of hit and miss with different libraries. Hi Everybody. I scanned the photo of the Founders Park Plaque and sent it on to Nadine to forward to everyone. I'm going to get a better shot of it when it's in the shade (the names will show up better). On the day I took that photo, I didn't realize lots of people would want a copy, so I wasn't very fussy with the details! Also...if anyone wants specific photos of a Mendon area site (gravestone, etc) let me know. When I'm out that way, I'll see what I can do. My camera is always in my car! Thank you, Alice. I'll take a ride over there and check out the Samuel READ stone that is there. Hi Everyone. It's midnight on Monday and I just got back from spending Sunday night away. (I went to Maine to check out some cemeteries for genealogy.) I will scan that photo in the morning and send it on to those who asked. (Or to Nadine to forward it on.) I just checked the photo to make sure I didn't omit John Bartlett's name in transcribing it, but, unfortunately...the name is not on the plaque. I took 5 pictures of plaques in Mendon. The Founders Park plaque is the only one that mentions all those names. One says that George Washington passed through in 1789. Here's what another one says: 1630-1930 FIRST MEETINGHOUSE Here stood Mendon's first meetinghouse, built in 1668 and destroyed by Indians in 1676. Joseph EMERSON, the minister, was an ancestor of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary Commission (All the words are in all capitals on the sign. "Meetinghouse" is spelled as one word.) Until tomorrow... Thanks Alice - I'll give them a call and see what they have to say. I'll let the list know what I find out.
