    1. [MA-MENDON] East Blackstone Meeting House Burial Ground
    2. Frank Comstock
    3. As I run across old documents, I like to share them with the list. Although there are only a few names in this document and they may not be of any interest to anyone other than me, this gives you an idea of what was going on in the late 1890s. For those of you with Kelly ancestors in the Mendon area, you may note there is a Moses G. Kelly mentioned in this document. He was the recipient of an old letter I posted to the list a number of months ago. I will be posting another document soon which also refers to the document below and to the burial grounds at East Blackstone. For those who are also subscribed to the RI list, you'll see this twice as I also intend to post it there since it involves the Smithfield Monthly Meeting. I have removed some capitalization and formatting that might not make it through Rootsweb's filters. Quoted from a copy of a document: This agreement, made in two parts this first day of July A.D. 1897, by and between Smithfield Monthly Meeting of Friends, a corporation created by the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island, duly organized and transacting business, party of the first part, and Rollin A. Woodworth, Moses Gilbert Kelly and Frank P. Comstock, parties of the second part: Witnesseth: Whereas said parties of the second part; the Estate of Jonathan F. Comstock; Andrew Comstock and others have placed the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.) in the hands of said party of the first part in trust, nevertheless, for the following uses and purposes forever, to wit: For the perpetual care of the Friends Cemetery, and maintenance of the building therein until otherwise disposed of, at East Blackstone, County of Worcester, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, located on the Mendon Road, so called. To use the income from said principal sum or so much of the income as may be necessary for the purposes aforesaid; in conjunction with said parties of the second part. But at no time shall said trust fund be drawn upon or reduced below said sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.), and in case the income from said trust fund shall not be sufficient for all purposes herein contemplated the case of the Cemetery and the fences surrounding the same shall have precedence. It is hereby further agreed that in case of death, resignation or inability to serve of any or all of said parties of the second part, the vacancy so caused shall not work any forfeiture or abatement of the trusts hereby created and such vacancy or vacancies may at any time be filled by the survivors or the survivor of said parties of the second part. In case of the death, resignation or inability to serve of all said parties of the second part the court hereinafter named may appoint one or more such party or parties who shall have the same rights and privileges as those herein named. This may be done on the petition of any person having an interest in the subject matter hereof. Said party of the first part, as herein provided for, in the care of said Cemetery shall at the least cause the same to be mown and raked once in each anniversary year. It is hereby further mutually agreed that neither of the said parties of the first or second part shall at any time receive any compensation for any services rendered in the matters aforesaid, other than the actual labor performed. It is mutually agreed between all the parties hereto that in case the Smithfield Monthly Meeting of Friends may become extinct or cease to perform its accustomed functions then the trust fund and all parts thereof herein provided shall pass and be transferred to the Quarterly Meeting, by its consent, a corporation also created as aforesaid, and in case this last named corporation shall become extinct or cease to perform its accustomed functions or decline the trust then the trust fund and all parts thereof herein provided shall pass and be transferred to New England Yearly Meeting of Friends, by its consent, another corporation also created as above mentioned, and in case this last corporation shall become extinct or cease to perform its accustomed functions or decline the trust, then a new trustee may be appointed by the Supreme Court of the State of Rhode Island or by the Court of whatever name having jurisdiction over such matters in said State. Whenever said trust f! und shall be deposited in any Savings Institution a copy of this agreement shall be furnished to such institution. In testimony whereof the party of the first part has caused the execution of these presents by George F. Varney, its Clerk, for the purpose hereunto duly authorized and the said parties of the second part have hereunto set their hands and seals all on the day and year first above written. Signed and Sealed in the presence of Elisha T. Read George F. Varney, Clerk Rollin A. Woodworth Frank P. Comstock Moses Gilbert Kelly Hope someone finds this useful.....Frank Comstock

    2. F.W. Coburn, Muster Rolls of the Participating companies of American Militia and Minutemen paperback "The Battle of April 19, 1775" mostly from the Archives of the Commonwealth of MA compioled by Frank Warren Coburn and reprinted (paper) 2001 by Eastern National" I have an extra copy of this paperback booklet that I bought for $6.95... willing to part with this extra copy ... it only lists those who participated in the April 19, 1775 battle and gives name of the officer and the town from where the officer came. Sorry if this offends anyone; had an extra copy and thought it might be useful to someone who lives at a distance and can't look up the records. Some of the men are from Middlesex County, Essex County, Worcester County....

    1. [MA-MENDON] Location of Waterford
    2. Alison Franks
    3. Hi All: Thanks to a couple of list members, namely Alice , our List administrator, and Jean Jespane, I have the answer to Waterford. It is a village or area of what is now Blackstone. Until 1845, Blackstone was part of Mendon. I wasn't certain, but thought that this might be the answer, but needed to get the correct information. Thank you both. 3. Hi All: Have a question for which I need a very specific answer for: Where is the section of Mendon, MA called Waterford in the 1840's or so? And - for anyone who might run across Necropolis Cemetery - that is now known as Swandale Cemetery. 1. [MA-MENDON] Medway Mill, Medway, MA
    2. Hi Listers - There's a nice article in the Milford Daily News today, about the Medway Mill on Rte 109 in Medway, MA built circa 1827 by Cephas Thayer as a stone mill that manufactured machinery for cotton and woolen goods, according to town historian Francis Donovan. http://www.milforddailynews.com/news/local_regional/medw_mill09222003.htm Medway is in Norfolk County, but the mill was built by a Thayer. If anyone belongs to the Norfolk county list, maybe you can send this along. 1. Re: [MA-MENDON] Lois Chilson
    2. This e-mail was in the Chilson archives.... Lois CHILSON's daughter, Margaret BURDEN, married John BENSON at Glocester, RI, 19 September 1773. With different surnames for mother and daughter, presumably Margaret was married to a Burden before or her mother, Lois Burden, married a Chilson after marrying a Burden. Seek information on these people. Please write to RBensonFL@aol.com. ------------------------- In Uxbridge I have a Stephen Burdin born 1754 and James Bardens in that same area; I have seen it spelled Burden and Bardeen as well. 3. Morning Listers and Jean, Jean would the Woonsocket American French Genealogy Society and I believe there is one in Pawtucket .. They have the Cemetery records..I know they did the Woonsocket and area ones, so probably did Paw. also. They have a wealth of info not only French Canadian material. Plus they have data on Blackstone, Woon, and area towns. Worth looking into. I believe they have a web site also. AFGS. Lucky you taking a genealogy jaunt. :) Alice alicep@rcn.com Message from Massachusetts

    2. Hi Alice - I was just looking through the list archives of the Gencmp list at rootsweb, and found a lot of messages there about cd's etc. When my subscription is confirmed, I'll post a message about your dilemma, and see what comes back. I sent a message yesterday to someone else, but haven't heard back yet. I'm hopeful someone will be able to help. 1. [MA-MENDON] a Rhode Island question
    2. I wanted to spend one day and an overnight in RI to look up families in Pawtucket Was wondering what is the best way to spend one day. Also, would like to know if it is possible to obtain a Catholic church record of burial in Fairlawn/Pawtucket... I believe Dexter Payne was buried in Fairlawn Pawtucket in a Catholic Church Burial in 1788 and was wondering where that kind of record might be kept. He lived in Burrilville, Smithfield, Pawtucket, Blackstone, etc. but the obituary in the newspaper says he was buried in Pawtucket with the Hannaway family in attendance and I am thinking that Catherine Hanaway was a Catholic church member and he married her and may have converted to Catholic. He is not in the RI cemetery data base Jean Thanks... my sister is coming from CA and we only have 1 day and 1/2 so thought I would get the direct answer from someone on the "border"... Anyone who would like to attend our "cousins" party it will be on the 21st at New England Steak and Seafood in Mendon (where we first went to the drive in movies in high school)

    1. Re: [MA-MENDON] Mendon Cemeteries - software, etc.
    2. Alice - It doesn't appear that you can convert directly from Access to Adobe, but you can convert from Access to Excel, and then to Adobe. The Adobe Acrobat that we all can get for free is the reader only program. What you would need is the full Adobe Acrobat program that allows you to create documents. That's the one I think they might have in conjunction with the Town's web site. The town's web site was designed by: JC Web Design 34 Uxbridge Road Mendon, MA 01756 Phone: (508)473-9105 or (508)478-0112 Email: jcweb@webdesignbyjc.com Maybe if you contacted her, she might be able to tell you who her Town Hall contact is for the web site. I'm wondering if the data could be put on line at the website, and charge people to view it? There's a rootsweb list called Gen computing. That's probably the place to find someone who can give you some technical advice.
