Good morning, I belong to many other Lists but have just joined this List. I know very little about CENSUS documents in New England. The only ones I have are from the very early 1800's in "Maine." I could ask lots of questions. But, for this morning, I'd like to ask two: LEWIS: John and Mary Lewis and their baby left Halifax, NS, in 1881 and migrated to Boston. They eventually settled in Stoneham, and raised 13 children there. But, I don't know which year they actually moved to Stoneham. I'm curious if they lived in other towns before they settled in Stoneham. Also, they and their seven younger siblings were all "British Home Children." I have found out that the younger CORKILL siblings remained in Nova Scotia. But, I cannot locate information on the three LEWIS sisters. Just this weekend the thought popped into my head that they might have come to Boston with their brother. So, finding John Lewis on a Census for around 1890 ish, might include his younger sisters in the same home. DEXTER: By opening my grandmother's Adoption Files from 1892, I discovered that her adoptive parents were really her maternal grandparents. Her birth mother either died in childbirth, or a year later. It seems that John and Mary Dexter lived on Franklin Street in Melrose from only about 1890 to 1900. They might have lived in Boston ... before that. ... When Mrs. Dexter died in 1899, Mr. Dexter took his granddaughter to an orphanage in Boston and dropped her off (Age 11). She never saw him again, or any relative. Mr. Dexter then sold the house in Melrose and ... moved out of town. There are two questions here: Mr. Dexter was Age 62 when he left Melrose, so I don't know how many years he lived afterward. If he stayed in MA, is there a statewide Census for 1900? (He might have moved back to CT where he grew up, or to RI where he had relatives.) I would very much like to find out the full name of my grandmother's birth mother. It seems that the only way I would find out is to find her name .. listed as a ...child... of John and Mary Dexter between 1870 and 1890. As I mentioned, I am only guessing that they lived in Greater Boston during those years. (I also do not know if the Dexter's had other children.) Thank you very much for any .. suggestions... you can offer me! Have a good day, Betty (near Lowell, MA)
