Census records of Lee, Ma. in 1870 list him as Eddie Dimpsey, age 10. Various records have indicated his birth year between 1859-1861. 1900 Census, enumeration district 39, Lee, Berkshire Co., Ma. indicates he was born in July, 1861 and was a "helper-engineer -- papermaker". He could read and write. According to "Child's Directory" 1884-85, Town of Lee, p. 144, he was listed as"Demsey Edward, Laborer". Along with him are "Demsey Nancy, (Lenox Furnace) widow" and "Demsey Thomas laborer". Born in Great Barrington Dec. 26, 1901, the daughter of Patrick J. and Mary Bills Nalty, she attended schools in Great Barrington and was a graduate of the former Berkshire Business College. In the 1950s, Mrs. Dempsey was employed by several local insurance companies. Her husband, Edward J. Dempsey, died Oct. 1, 1963. She was a resident of Lee for 64 years and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. She leaves a son, John N. Dempsey of Laurel, Md.; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Johnson of Lee, and Mrs. Sheila Smith of West Hartford, Conn; a sister, Mrs. Florence Walsh of Torrington, Conn; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
