    3. Hello again, Sorry. I forgot to mention that I had found my grandfather, Silas "Dean" LEWIS, still living at home in Stoneham, MA, at Age 11, in 1910. He was not in the Index, but was found among the many children of his parents, John S. and Mary LEWIS. And, if Silas D. LEWIS was 11 in 1910, he would have been seen as Age 21 in 1920 and Age 31 in 1930. And, I forgot to mention that his first wife, Clarissa KIDDER, was not listed with her family in the 1920 Census. The family in 1920 in Winchester, MA, showed George S. KIDDER, Louise, wife, and two sons, George S., 15, and Clinton W., 12. She would have been the older sister of "Sanford" (Jr.) and young Clinton. Since Silas and Clarissa LEWIS had their daughter, Louise, in May 1919, then they would have been married and living in MA or NH -- before the 1920 Census. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA)

    1. Silas Dean LEWIS in 1920, 1930, MA ?
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I'd like to ask for help in finding out where my grandparents were living when they first married. I don't think my sister has yet found out when they married, or even where. A "family story" is that they married in NH. Silas "Dean" LEWIS probably married Clarissa Adelaide KIDDER around 1916 to 1918. I understand they married very young. Another "family story" is that they had 3 miscarriages or still-born births before their daughter, Louise M. LEWIS, was born in May 1919. They then had a son, John, born in 1921, and a son Silas LEWIS, Jr., born in 1923. Whatever the case, Silas and Clarissa LEWIS, should have been living in MA as a couple with a baby in the 1920 Census. Yet, I am not finding them. (If they married in NH, perhaps they lived their first year of married life in NH.) ?? I'd also very much like to find out where they were living in 1930. However, I need to explain that it was right around 1930 that they "divorced." And, reportedly within a year, they had each remarried. So, the 1930 Census might "possibly" show: Silas D. and Hazel (BEDELL) LEWIS and her four children living in MA Herbert and Clarissa FRANCIS living in MA. .. Silas and Hazel LEWIS had no children of their own. Herbert and Clarissa had two children born in the 1930's. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) P.S. My great-uncle, "Sanford" KIDDER, and my uncle, "Dean" LEWIS, both "left town" ("disappeared") around 1950 - never to be seen again. It has just occurred to me this week ... that, perhaps, they "left town" together ! :o) (Both uncle and nephew had "troubled childhoods.")

    3. Hello, I'd like to ask for help in finding out where my great-uncle, George "Sanford" KIDDER (Jr.) was living in 1930. It would have been in either MA or NH. In the 1920 Census, he was living at home with his parents, George S. and Louise W. KIDDER, on Main Street in Winchester.* Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) *Actually, Uncle Sanford, was also listed in the "Reform School" in Chelmsford, MA, in 1920. :o)

COOMBS/COOMBES As you know, I am still researching an ancestor who shows up in the Massachusetts census as having been institutionalized at Taunton State Hospital. Does anyone, by any chance, know for sure whether the historic (1870ish) Taunton State Hospital records are still housed at the hospital in Taunton or whether they are now at the Massachusetts State Archives? Two people at the Taunton hospital, in medical records, tell me they are at the Massachusetts State Archives and that they include beautiful old diagnosis cards housed in 3 big boxes. When I called the Archives (twice), they said they don't have them at their location and have never heard of old diagnosis cards and have no record of their existence, but are intrigued by the thought of them and would like to know for sure where they are, if they do exist. They said they'd like to talk to the Taunton Hospital to find out more about them. I keep getting shuffled around. The Archives people said they have a listing of materials showing old admittance records from Taunton, but they say they are located at Taunton, not the Archives. The Taunton people, on the other hand, claim the records are at the Archives. I have left a message on the Medical Director's voice mail (at Taunton), but he hasn't called me back. I thought someone on this list might have dealt with this problem before and might be able to give me some guidance. 3. As you know, I am still researching an ancestor who shows up in the Massachusetts census as having been institutionalized at Taunton State Hospital. 3. Could anyone tell me whether there is a listing for an Augustus Chamberlain in the 1870 or 1880 census? I just read a posting in a COMBS list which says John B. Coombs, age 16, was living with an Augustus Chamberlain, age 24, and several others, in Abington, Massachusetts in 1850. John B. and Augustus are both listed as being shoemakers. The age and location would correspond with that of the John B. Coombs I am trying to research. In addition, I know that John's son Samuel named his first child Augustus, and I'll bet he was named for this Augustus Chamberlain fellow. A cousin, maybe? 1. Re: [MA-CENSUS-LOOKUP] 1800s, Plymouth County, John B. COOMBS/COOMBES
    2. Hi Simone, Just pulled it up at www.familysearch.org. It's still a free site for the 1880. Heritage Quest has the 1880 however not indexed, because you can use the familysearch index then take the series/roll/page and look it up on HQ. Coombes, as listed in the 1880 census? For some reason, I can't access the 1880 census, even at places like familysearch.org, where I thought it used to be free, and the Heritage Quest site doesn't seem to include the 1880 census. I am trying to find any offspring of those children to contact, in case they might have the family genealogy. Can anyone tell me whether there is a free source of the 1880 census I can access, and I'd also like to find out who Mary F. Coombes married. I think it is listed in an index someone mentioned to me, but I'm not sure whether that index gives her husband's name. Maybe it's in the Plymouth, MA, web site, because she lived in Abington. It was exciting! It appears James W. never sent in the correction, and the name on it was spelled as "Coombs," instead of "Coombes," and the birth date is December 22, 1867, which I did not have. The mother is listed as "Elizabeth B." not the "Elizabeth R." that shows up in the census, and I found out the father was a shoemaker at that time, another piece of info I did not have. The Clerk said both John B. and Elizabeth B. are listed as having been born in Boston. I have a friend in South Wales who might be able to help you with your Wales research on the Joneses.
