    3. Dear Nancy, I want to thank you for taking the time and the effort to do this census look-up for me,it really means a lot. I'm sorry it has taken me untill now to thank you,but I had to contact my mother with this information to see if she could verify theese facts. Most of the information in the census seems to ring true to her such as her mother was known as Nellie and she had a sister named Grace, but she has no knowlege of a third sister named Treasa. Even so, I am going to continue my search under the assumption that this Michael McGurran is the correct person, unless somewhere along the line I find out otherwise. Again, I want to thank you for all you have done, and if ever I can help you with something [ even though I am but a novice ] please just ask me. I will keep you posted as to the success [ or otherwise ] of my search. Sincerely, Wayne Adams PADAMS4760@prodigy.net

    3. Hello Wayne, I may have good news for you, at least I hope so! Searching the on-line index of the 1900 census for Massachusetts I found a Michael McGurran, Head of Household listed with him were three daughters: Grace, Nellie and Treasa. Nellie was born Nov. 1894 in Massachusetts. Could this be your Helen McGurran? 2. Thomas Hilt
    3. HELLO FROM THE ISLAND OF GUAM I am interested in you looking up the following from Philadelphia. George Hilt John Beavan (Bevan) Adella Hilt (I believe in Ward one) Levi Hilt Here is the story. Adella and Levi hilt are married in 1860-1863. Son george is born same time frame. Adella is the daughter of John Davis Bevan. Levi is in city directory in 1864 and is regustered in Union army but no muster out date in 1863. Adella is in census as Adella Hilt in ward one but cannot find Levi Hilt. Someone else looked up for me but George Hikt is listed in a list of names under John Bevan in ward 23-24. Any help would be appreciated. We are wondering if Levi died and if Adella is the head of the household in 1870. Here is the curious part..she dies in 1871. Son George would be about 7 years old. We have an old Bible with georges birth daye really smeared. Adella would have died at age 27 or so. The disappearance of Levi is a mystery and then to make matters worse we came across an old picture of Adella's name as Adella Speers with Samuel Speers. However in Bible she is listed As Adella Hilt when she dies. WOW. What a mystery. I do not know how good a detective you are but it is curuous that George age 7 is in home of grandfather in one ward and Adella is in Ward one. I wonder if there was a hospital there or something, She died dec. 18, 1871 and was born on March 28,1845 so she was young, She married Levi Hilt on July 7, 1863 and the ceremony was performed by a John Cloud who was analderman. We are hoping a more exact census would help with some of the questions. Thank you so much. 2. I am hoping someone on this list knows some 50 year old Mass. history and can give me direction. Some of my family were the Clarence Hoag family, who were quite wealthy. They had a fire destroy their castle-like home in the 1950s or 1960s, and I am interested in learning about it, where & when it occurred, and then in contacting a local newspaper to retrieve an article with address and family particulars. Although it seems just like the other day, I just realized it perhaps was 50 years ago. Sheeez! Can anyone please dig up any info on the fire? It's mostly a gift for my Aunt & Uncle, and they would really enjoy clarifying all the stories they tell. I'm just trying to figure how they fit into our family tree, and scouring the earth for some other connections to Newfoundland. Thanks ever so much on this lovely Easter Sunday. Candi

    1. [MA-CENSUS] 1900 Thomas Gray lookup by Nancy
    2. Hi Nancy, Thank you for looking up the info about Thomas Lyman Gray. My problem is in the 1880 and 1900 census, Thomas lists the parents as born in NY. His older brother, my gggrandfather, James lists the parents as born in Ireland. My thinking is and I have asked around about this and it seems to be a fairly common occurrence, is that Thomas was probably not at home of the time of the census (he was working) and a family member gave the info. I'm thinking something must have ocurred, whether the parents died or they had a falling out, but Thomas was gone from NY and living in Worcester at age 15 and maybe Thomas' wife and kids thinking since Thomas was from NY, guess the parents are too. On the other hand James was still in NY at that time. But I digress......Anyway, my reason for wanting to see the 1910 and or 1920 census is that maybe Thomas was the one giving out the info and filled it out differentlyand he lists his parents as born in Ireland. I do know that in 1920 he was retired (he died in 1925) but I don''t know if he was retired in 1920. Thanks, Patti Hi Patti, There is a Thomas Gray in the 1900 Webster, Worcester County, MA census. He was living on Elm St., was born April 1843 in New York and he was listed as working in a Nailing Machine shop. Both parents were listed as having been born in New York. Could this be your Thomas Gray? Nancy
