    1. [MA-CENSUS-LOOKUP] 1900 Census, Samuel Mackie, Hampden County
    2. edoc
    3. Through the kindness of respondents on this list, I have information regarding my wife's grandmother, Samuel Mackie. The information comes from the 1910 and 1920 MA Federal Census data. Would someone with access to the 1900 MA Federal Census check for any references to Samuel Mackie ? Most likely, he would have been living in Hampden County, either in Holyoke or in Chicopee. Thanks in advance for any help. Ed O'Connor Hudson,MA

Hope you did receive it. you are welcome!! Gladys< Thanks, Gladys...yes, I did receive it, and sent you a thank you! Now, then a friend in Vermont went searching for in the 1910 census for "my" George, and found a George W. Johnson (wrong middle initial), who was the right age... the man above was a year too old. "George W. Johnson" was married for the second time, had been married ten years, which would fit right in with the death of "my" George's 1st wife in 1900. Also, he was 53 years old, which is correct for "my" George. Also, he worked in the shoe industry, which also is a fit for "my" George, who was working in the leather industry at the time of his marriage to his first wife. His father and his mother's entire family worked in the leather, or shoe industry. This second marriage may be the reason my grandmother went to live with her aunt following the death of her mother, her elder sister having married by that time.. My George P. Johnson is listed in the 1880 census with his first wife, Annie, as well as their first child, a dau., 7 mos. old. My grandmother was born in 1883. How I wish the 1890 census had not been, for the most part, destroyed...it could have been a huge help. I'm sending for the marriage record for "George W. Johnson and his second wife to see if he is the right one. The census information in those days was taken from whoever was home, and so there can be discrepancies. here and there. Many thanks for your help! Claudia

    3. Hi, Gladys, A friend looked in the 1910 census and saw this man, who would have been a year too old...and also a "George W. Johnson", who would have been the right age, and had married for the second time. I am sending to the Massachusetts Archives for this second man's marriage record to see if he is the right one. This second man had been married for ten years, which would fit right in with the fact that my George's first wife nad died in 1900. Also, the second George worked in the shoe industry, which also is a fit with the occupation of "my" George. It is confusing to rely on the census, since in those days, information was taken from whoever answered the door, and hence was not always accurate. Thanks again.... Claudia

    3. Would someone with access to the 1900 Federal Census for Massachusetts do a lookup for a Hoessler family. Father's name was Robert and the mother's name was Selma. They were in Connecticut( Stafford Springs, Hartford County) in the early to mid 1880's where at least two of their children were born but they moved to Massachusetts at some point. I've checked the 1880 CT. Census without success and I was hoping to find them in MA by 1900. Children were Paul, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Charles and Charlotte although one or more may have already moved out by the time of the 1900 Census. Thanks for any possible assistance. 3. Would someone with access to the 1860 MA Federal Census do a lookup for a Robinson family who most likely was living in Hopedale, MA ? At that time Hopedale was a part of Milford as I understand it. This family has been difficult(impossible so far) to find although my great grandmother, Mary Josephine Robinson, daughter of Louis and Mary( or Elizabeth) Gosselin Robinson was supposedly born in Hopedale. Mary Josephine's marriage certs( 1879 and 1893) and her death cert(1915) all indicate that she was born in Hopedale between 1857 and 1862. So far, I have found no evidence of her place of birth either in municipal records or at the State Archives. Mary Josephine is one of my maternal great grandmothers. Thanks in advance for any help. Annie Gould Wood, 1879 (Marriage Certificate, 1879, res. of groom, Peabody, MA, res. of bride, Salem, MA) Children: had two, and poss. three by 1900, all of whom were gone by 1910 (my grandmother was b. 1883 at Lynn, MA, married, 1905) Annie Gould (Wood) Johnson d. 1900; the address on her death certificate is 44 Pearl Street, Everett, MA. George Peabody Johnson is listed as her husband. We do not know what became of him after that. The Mass Archives cannot find a death for him prior to 1910. Columbia Point at Boston cannot find a death for him through 1921. He may have lived after Annie's death in Lynn, Everett, Peabody, Salem, Danvers. He is not buried with Annie.
