    1. [LUTHERAN-ROOTS-L] List Admin post -- an idea for your review; also list prepend

    3. Hello subscribers, I maintain 10 other mailing lists for Rootsweb, including several surname lists and several county lists. On those mailing list pages, I have included a researcher profile section to allow subscribers to post their research interests -- both to allow others to contact them and to allow their interests to be available to a search engine. I would like to propose that a section like that (though perhaps a separate page would be better...) be added to the mailing list page for LUTHERAN-ROOTS. First, let me give you some links to other pages I have created that include sections like the one I have in mind: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/vabuckin_list.htm#R_A http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/moses_list.html#R_A The Moses page, in addition to including researcher profiles, also includes immigrant profiles, with a link between the immigrants and the persons researching them: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/moses_list.html#Immigrants Here's what I propose to do: -- Add a new page for researcher profiles, to include surnames, geographic locations, and specific churches of interest. -- Add a new page (or use the same page as the researcher profiles) for immigrants (and also perhaps the non-immigrant ancestors like I have on the Moses page -- where a non-immigrant ancestor would be the earliest ancestor you can find, but you don't know where they came from) -- For people that post their interest in particular churches, I will make sure that an entry exists in the directory for that church, and then the researcher profile and church can be linked together. Also perhaps the surnames can be linked there as well. For this proposal to work, several things will need to happen: 1) You must communicate your desire to be included, and provide whatever information you wish to have included. At the minimum, a researcher profile would be needed, and optionally one or more immigrant ancestors and one or more churches of interest. This can be done on or off list. 2) VERY IMPORTANT: You must allow for the fact that I will only be able to add a couple of these on any given day; patience will be necessary. 3) Where this will really start to pay off is when you look over the updates and find an entry for one of your own ancestors or a church you are interested in as well -- then you can give me your researcher profile if you haven't already, and I can start to add additional links under each entry. A researcher profile should contain the following information: -- Name -- E-mail address -- Web address if any -- Something to show a link to the Lutheran/Reformed church (and whatever other churches belong here that aren't covered by that label), whether that link be an ancestor (immigrant or non-immigrant) or a church, or perhaps just surnames known to be associated with Lutherans. An ancestor profile should contain the following information: -- Name (and name variants if applicable) -- Approximate birth and death dates -- Approximate location -- If immigrant, point of emigration (i.e. where did the boat leave from?), point of immigration (i.e. where did the immigrant settle, or where did the boat land?), year of immigration and name of ship if known -- Name of spouse if known -- Names of children if known -- Connection to Lutheran/Reformed, which would include church membership, burial in a church cemetery, etc. A church profile should contain the following information: -- Current name (and any former names) of church if still in existence; otherwise any former names by which the church was known -- Approximate year founded, if known -- Location (Country, State or Province, County, Township, etc.) -- Names/locations of any cemeteries associated with the church -- If no longer in existence, approximate year of closure if known -- Current synod membership if known, or if no longer in existence, location where records can be found if known -- Website address if any; by this I mean a website dedicated to the genealogy/history of the church, not a current webpage for current members -- Photos would also be acceptable, but those would need to be sent directly to me, as attachments are not allowed on Rootsweb Please let me know what you think about this proposal. Also, let me warn you that I will soon (finally...) be adjusting the prepend for this list. The current prepend is [LUTHERAN-ROOTS-L]. As this is one of the longer prepends, and as we voted some time ago to shorten this prepend to LUTH-ROOTS, I think it is about time that this change be made. Of course, what will happen is that, for a while at least, messages might come in as [LUTH-ROOTS] Re: [LUTHERAN-ROOTS-L], but that behavior if seen at all will be transient in nature. -- I look forward to your comments, Mary Taffet List Admin for LUTHERAN-ROOTS mdtaffet@syr.edu

These look very similar to the query pages for Ford and Iroquois County, Illinois, and though this method requires greater maintenance than a query bin form, it is more controllable, editable and changeable than using a bin form. We have found it useful for easy contact, and in our opinions (mine and Deb's) preferable to the query bin used alone. > --snip-- > > Here's what I propose to do: > > -- Add a new page for researcher profiles, to include surnames, > geographic locations, and specific churches of interest. > > -- Add a new page (or use the same page as the researcher profiles) for > immigrants (and also perhaps the non-immigrant ancestors like I have on > the Moses page -- where a non-immigrant ancestor would be the earliest > ancestor you can find, but you don't know where they came from) > > -- For people that post their interest in particular churches, I will > make sure that an entry exists in the directory for that church, and > then the researcher profile and church can be linked together. All excellent ideas and a commitment to a lot of work. > > For this proposal to work, several things will need to happen: > > 1) You must communicate your desire to be included, and provide whatever > information you wish to have included. I assume you would put an email link on the page to be used to send the information to you? Then copy and paste? Or have you another method in mind? > > 2) VERY IMPORTANT: You must allow for the fact that I will only be able > to add a couple of these on any given day; patience will be necessary. Boy, can I relate to that! She's right folks. Some pages using this query method get updated only about twice a month, because it is very labor-intensive. > > 3) Where this will really start to pay off is when you look over the > updates and find an entry for one of your own ancestors or a church you > are interested in as well -- then you can give me your researcher > profile if you haven't already, and I can start to add additional links > under each entry. I might also suggest that those who have special documents or directories for specific congregations and/or schools (colleges, junior colleges, church high schools and grade schools, etc.) list them as available for lookups IF the person will actually commit to doing the lookups. For instance, I have a 75th Anniversary Book for my home congregation, published when I was 3 years old. It contains a list of all the voting members (all men, of course) since the inception of the congregation up to 1945. I would list it as a lookup tool for Lutherans in Iroquois County, Illinois. I also have an alumni directory for Concordia Lutheran High School, Fort Wayne. That would be listed, as well. My personal purpose would be to DISCOVER these things regarding the congregations in Addison, Illinois and Dunklee's Grove/Bensenville. > > Please let me know what you think about this proposal.
