Walther's opponents in the Predestinarian Controversy; joined the Ohio Synod with other dissidents; became president of its Northwest District in 1882 until 1890 and of its successor, the Wisconsin District, until 1899; president of the Board of Luther Seminary in Afton (later St. Paul), Minnesota (1884-1910); D.D. from Capital University in 1898 1850 Reinhold Pieper, professor, president of Seminary, Springfield, born in Carwitz, Pomerania, Germany (d. 1920); graduate of Concordia, St. Louis; pastor in Wrightstown and Manitowoc, Wisconsin; in 1891 became president and professor of exegetics, homiletics, and church history at Concordia Seminary in Springfield; pastor at Chatham and Riverton, Illinois; retired in 1914, while retaining charge of his congregations until his death; contributor to _Lehre and Wehre_; published five volumes of sermons, a text-book on homiletics and three volumes of lectures on Luther's Catechism; had a comprehensive knowledge of Lutheran theology and was exceptionally able to impart it to his students 1856 Laurentius G.
