    1. Re: [LUTHERAN-ROOTS-L] possible lookups?
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Jeff, FYI -- I did a little bit of searching this afternoon at the library next door. I didn't see any of these titles right away, but I did find something for you just the same. In a publication about the Mohawk Valley, I found a copy of two probate abstracts for Lintner. One was for a George, and the other for a John. George died before John, by about 2 years. I think George was in 1825 and John in 1827. Both gives names of children, but John's abstract also mentions the name of this brother (George), and also his father (George); both George's were deceased when the will was probated. If John was your George's brother, then it stands to reason that your George's father was also named George. I requested copies of two pages from that publication, and I will pick them up tomorrow. If you send me your snail mail address (off list please), then I can mail you those two pages. If others are searching for New York state connections, since I do have relatively easy access to many good publications, I can do other lookups upon request, but only until May 15th. After that, I won't have easy access to the downtown library. -- Mary Taffet List Administrator for LUTHERAN-ROOTS mdtaffet@syr.edu On Fri, 17 Mar 2000 jeff_lintner@dph.sf.ca.us wrote: > List members, > > If anyone has access to any of these titles, and is willing to conduct > a brief look up, I would appreciate it. 1. [LUTHERAN-ROOTS-L] A searchable digital library
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello subscribers, Just this evening I discovered a wonderful digital library that is easily searchable. There are quite a few Lutheran records included in this library, so I thought it was worth passing along the info. The main page for this digital library can be found at: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/content.html This opening page describes the contents of the digital library, and includes links to each collection that is available. However, the easiest way to interact with this digital library is to use the Full Text search feature, which is available both as a link from the page above, and directly at the following address: http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/search.html If you go straight to the Full Text search feature, then you may wish to start your search in the Category "Church Records". You will need to do a separate search for each category of data, which is a minor drawback, given the powerful search engine available. The data seems to concentrate on both Russia and the American west, including Nebraska and South Dakota, etc. -- Enjoy, Mary Taffet List Administrator for LUTHERAN-ROOTS mdtaffet@syr.edu

    3. Jeff, I'm curious about one of the publications you mention. You mention "Journals" of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, 21 vols. I have seen a 3-volume set called "Journals of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg" -- are you saying that there is another set of his Journals with more information in it? I can check and see which of these publications are available at the Onondaga County Public Library, but not until next Wednesday. Also, do you know if these publications are indexed, or otherwise easily searchable? Lookups are generally only possible for a publication with an index or some other clear system for finding names (such as alphabetical arrangement in the publication). I recall going through, or at least near, Canajoharie on my way to Albany from Syracuse before. 2. Hello Lois: I was excited to ask the question yesterday, I have gotten only positive replies. Along with a web site to do civil war research...(which you probably have already.) I have been in the newsletter for a while now, but I am just now starting my research. (I really was confused as to where and how to begin.) I am thrilled to have your offer for help. Maybe you can help me when I get "that far" in my search, but I value your help, reply, response. I can tell you what I do know if you are still offering. Actually, I am thinking that my family either does not know our history, that they have lied, or been lead down a different path. Sorry about my rambling here. (who would have ever thought that finding a gravesite would have lead to a new interest?!) Thanks for your reply. Debbie : )

    2. Martha Oskvig
    3. I'm a newbie to the list who seeks information on German Lutheran congregations of Cincinnati, Ohio, from the 1840s-50s and where any of these church records are kept. My great-great-grandfather Frederick Wilhelm "William" KURDELMEIER arrived from Osnabruck, Hannover, in 1848 (just in time to build coffins during the great cholera epidemic). I know some death dates of Cincinnati KURDELMEYER women (in 1908, 1909 and 1963) but have been unable to locate other details. All KURDELMEIER and KURDELMEYER connections appreciated. 2. Eleanor Southwick
    3. I am researching the Knoebel family who established themselves in St. Clair County IL around 1840, the Kanofsky and Merckel or Merkel family would have arrived at the same time or close to it. Also my gg grandfather, Richard Finke came to St. Clair County, IL from Germany in 1856 along with a group of brothers and probably his parents. Names of the brothers and parents are unknown. He married Sophia Knoebel in 1875. I think that they were married in Shiloh. There is a good possibility that some of them attended the Luthern or German Reformed church. If anyone has a connection please e-mail me: eleanorsjoy@yahoo.com Thanks, Eleanor __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! 2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. FYI -- I just learned about existence of the NARA Digital Archives this evening. NARA is the National Archives & Records Administration, while NAIL, where the Digital Archives are found, is the National Archives Information Locator (at least I think so). Doing a search on the term "Lutheran", I find 35 records in return, that cluster around the following subjects: - St. Pietro's Lutheran Church, image of headstone for Alma Geline MOMRAK from that church's graveyard, also a photo of her - Other views of St. Pietro's Lutheran Church, which is in Minnesota - St. John's Lutheran in New Minden (Illinois) - Immanuel Lutheran Church (Lincoln, Nebraska) -- church building & surroundings, including the cemetery, also the Pastor -- Rev. David T. Ernst -- in celebration of 75 years - Norwegian Lutheran Church in Shelby County, Iowa These images are all available from the following search page: http://www.nara.gov/nara/searchnail.html Click on "NAIL Digital Copies Search". 2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello subscribers, We now have a suite of GenConnect boards that can be used to post Lutheran-related queries, bible records, biographies, deeds, obituaries, pensions or wills. All queries MUST go on the query board. All other boards must only contain information, rather than queries. Also, no copyrighted material can be posted on the boards -- only post material that is in the public domain, or material which has been abstracted from other sources. If you have any questions regarding the use of these new boards, please ask. Links to the boards have been placed on the mailing list page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/lutheran-roots_list.htm -- Enjoy, Mary Taffet List Administrator for LUTHERAN-ROOTS

    1. [LUTHERAN-ROOTS-L] Organization of Lutheran Churches in Germany?
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello all, Since I have run across a number of archive links for Lutheran churches in Germany, I thought it pertinent to ask if anyone on the list can explain the current organization of Lutheran churches in Germany. >From what I can gather, there is a top-level organization, Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland, which is composed of 24 regional church organization. Each of these regional organizations appears to be composed of smaller organizations, which one of the regional organizations refers to as "Kirchengemeinde(n)". Are these local churches, or what? Does anybody know? If there are any informed subscribers who can explain to the rest of us just how this organization should be understood, please post to the list. I will use any responses, along with my own intuitions where necessary, to enhance the mailing list webpage with sites for Germany. Also, I have considered the possibility of asking for a suite of GenConnect boards to go along with LUTHERAN-ROOTS. If granted, the suite would include the following boards, searchable from within Rootsweb: Queries Bible Records Bios Deeds Obits Pensions Wills Do you think it would be useful to have such boards available? The purpose of the boards would be two-fold: 1) Provide a place where you can post original records in your possession that you may wish to share with others 2) Provide a searchable repository -- all GenConnect boards are globally searchable using the Rootsweb surname helper. This would allow others researching your same surnames to contact you. Let me know what you think. -- Mary Taffet List Administrator for LUTHERAN-ROOTS mdtaffet@syr.edu

    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. FYI -- I don't recall if this is the same webpage that I sent you the address for previously, so if it is, I apologize for the duplication. The address is: http://www.uni-marburg.de/archivschule/deuarch.html It isn't specific to Lutheran archives from what I can tell, but it does have a lot of information. One of the pages linked from there ("Kirchliche Archive") does include links to several Lutheran archives ("Evangelische Kirche"). I hope you find this page useful, and as was pointed out last time I sent an address like this, you can use any of the various translation tools available on the web to translate for you. The translations won't be perfect, but they should be good enough for you to be able to figure out the gist of the page. -- Mary Taffet List Administrator for LUTHERAN-ROOTS mdtaffet@syr.edu
