I would like to know if anyone has any baptism, marriage, or death records for the St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Amherst, Ohio; my grandparents, and probably their extended families, attended there. Also, I would be interested in any baptism or marriage records for Vincennes, Indiana, regarding Webers; my greatgrandfather, William Weber, was supposedly born there, but I don't know what church. He was Lutheran though. Family names are: S.H.O.R.T , W.E.B.E.R, K.O.E.P.K.E, and W.A.R.D.E.S.K.A Timeline is from about 1870's onward. I can try to do lookups in reciprocation in Tacoma, WA. Thanks, Anna Hanson Tacoma WA > > 2) Church records that you don't have easy access to and would like to > inquire about > > 3) Names that you are researching when you know that they were > Lutherans, but you don't know the church > > 4) Areas/churches that you do know about, but you don't necessarily know > the names of individuals to search for > > 5) Your "most wanted" piece of information, as long as it relates to > Lutherans
Hello subscribers, For the last six months or so, the number of subscribers to LUTHERAN-ROOTS has remained rather steady, around 165-170 people give or take a few. With some recent "word of e-mail" publicity, we have now grown to 192 subscribers as of just a few minutes ago. I invite all subscribers, but particularly our newest subscribers, to post to the list one or more of the following kinds of messages: 1) Church records that you have easy access to and are willing to do lookups from 2) Church records that you don't have easy access to and would like to inquire about 3) Names that you are researching when you know that they were Lutherans, but you don't know the church 4) Areas/churches that you do know about, but you don't necessarily know the names of individuals to search for 5) Your "most wanted" piece of information, as long as it relates to Lutherans 6) Successful searches where you obtained access to the records you were seeking; maybe you can help somebody else do the same These are just some suggestions to get you going. Now, the main reason for this message. I have been kicking around the idea of putting together a directory of Lutheran churches unlike any other directory that currently exists. I would like your help to plan this project. I have some webspace available to me on the Rootsweb freepages server, and would like to create the directory there since there is no limit to the space available. I would like to create a directory that of course includes some kind of arrangement where people can find individual church entries, such as geographic or alphabetic (or both). But the biggest part of this proposed project would be to create a separate webpage for each Lutheran church, with a number of possible items to potentially include: -- historical timeline of the church; when founded, founders, ministers over the years, synodical membership, etc. -- stable contact information for the church, such as mailing address, street address if different, phone number, etc. (or just link to an entry in one of the other existing directories that shows this information) -- where to find the records, if known; perhaps by historical time period if/when necessary -- if this church has records of other churches, make a note of that as well -- information on any associated cemeteries -- a photo or photos if available -- perhaps a map and/or driving instructions that indicate location -- any good links to information about the church, such as the church webpage, webpages that include vital records for the church, etc. -- complete citations for any books or articles in print that contain records of this church -- contact information for researchers who do know something about this church -- if nobody is familiar with the church, then contact information for people who don't know anything about this church, but would like to I say that this is a planning project for now because I can't reasonably do anything other than think about it until the Spring semester ends in the middle of May. Here's where you can help: a) What other items of information should be included on each page -- i.e. what should the "template" look like? b) What of the items already mentioned should be excluded, and why? c) If you have any experience building webpages and could offer your assistance to help create the pages, once a template/format is determined, please let me know d) If you could serve as the "resident expert" for a particular church or group of churches -- i.e. provide the info that goes onto the webpage for that church or group of churches For now, I would like to concentrate the project on the U.S., but if someone would like to start a parallel project for another country, by all means let me know. As an aid to starting this project, I have grabbed from the USGS GNIS server the names and locations of all Lutheran churches and cemeteries registered in their database; or at least the ones that include the term "Lutheran" in the title. What other key terms should I search for if the church names don't include the word "Lutheran"? Perhaps "Evangelical", or "Reformed", etc.? Any thoughts on this? -- Mary Taffet List Administrator for LUTHERAN-ROOTS mdtaffet@syr.edu
To Sheila, There was a small list written up at the time of the first reinterment which was printed in a Philadelphia newspaper. A copy of the news article is at the German Society of PA at 611 Spring Garden Street, Phila. This list was also microfilmed by the Latter Day Saints and is the last item on film number 1312258. If your Koch family were members of St. Michael's and/or Zion Lutheran Churches in Philadelphia, they were probably listed in the Marriages, Baptisms and Burials recorded on that film as well as film numbers 1312256, 1312257 and 1312259. These films cover 1742 to the late 1800's, if memory serves. Both churches were torn down, but there are pictures in John F. Watson's "Annals of Philadelphia" published in 1872, which has Birch's etchings of them, and photos of them in "Colonial Churches and Meeting Houses", a book that might be found in historical society libraries. There are also models of these churches at the Krauth Library, 7301 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia. The Krauth Library holds the original records from these churches as well as many others in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Best of luck in your research. Jim Lawrence

My ancestor, Johann Adam Koch, helped build that church. I would love to know the names of the people that were buried there. Anyone know of a list that I could find? Sheila Anderson-Lewis
Hi All, I'm trying to locate the latest cemetery, where three sets of ancestors who were buried in the German Lutheran graveyard between Race and Vine Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have been reinterred. The original cemetery was associated with the St. Michael's and Zion Lutheran Churches which were both on Fourth Street in Philadelphia. About 1861 this cemetery was dug up and the bodies supposedly moved to 31st and Lehigh Streets across the street from Mount Peace Cemetery. Later, they were dug up again and reinterred elsewhere. I have been told they were in various Philadelphia cemeteries, but a check with those cemeteries has brought negative responses from all. Those cemeteries are: Laurel Hill (which does have reinterments from St. John's Lutheran graveyard); Philadelphia Memorial Park in Frazer, PA (which has 20th Century reinterments from the 31st and Lehigh site); Mount Peace; and Glenwood Cemetery. My ancestors' original burials dated from 1783 to 1836 and the three males involved were all members of the Philadelphia Militia during the American Revolution. It bothers me terribly that these ancestors are probably lying in unmarked graves somewhere and I can't even find them. Is there some kind soul who knows the whereabouts of these reinterments and can let me know? Any help would be appreciated and my entire family would be extremely thankful. I have an old note in my file: "WOMELSDORF: Organized by Lutherans and Reformed in Heidelberg Twp. in 1792, with their buildling dedicated in 1793. The union was dissolved in 1915 with the Lutherans becoming Zion Church at 300 West High Street Womelsdorf, and the Reformed becoming Zion UCC Church at Second and High Streets Womelsdorf." My mysteries have not been solved: the burial sites of Adam Wegerlin/Wegley (any spelling) who died in Heidelberg Twp. Dec. 1798 and Samuel Wegerlin/Wegley (any spelling) who died in 1818. Are there records of Womelsdorf Church - where would I write to find if Adam and Samuel are buried there? Thanks for any information............ Barbara Wegley Anderson Cincinnati, Ohio
Pamela, I don't see anything for marriage records, but I do see the following will abstracts, both for Lancaster County, PA: 1) Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834 June 17, 1766 March 7, 1769 GINGERICH, JOHN Children: Abraham, John, Christian, Jacob, Daniel, Barbara wife of John Shank, Veronica wife of Adam Baum and Ann wife of John Serrer. Grandchildren: Daniel, Barbara, Ann, Mary and Elizabeth (children of Abraham). Ex. John Gingerich, John Shank and Christian Bambarger. Warwick Twp. 2) Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834 June 19, 1778 August 19, 1778 GINGERY, CHRISTIAN Wife. Elizabeth Gingery. Children: John and Daniel. Ex. John Gingery. Warwick Twp. The only Daniel Gingrich (& various spellings) that I saw in several sources was one whose wife was named Anna Maria. Hello: I just subscribed to this list today, hoping some of you can help me. I am looking for the marriage of Daniel Gingrich/Gingary/Kingry(etc.) to Rosina about 1759-1760. Their first son, Solomon, was born on September 1, 1761, so I am estimating the parents marriage. Daniel and Rosina were married in Lancaster County, PA and then moved to Shenandoah County, VA in 1766. Does anyone have any church records, or other documentation that might help me with my quest? I have spent quite a bit of time at the LCHS, and can't find anything there. I am hoping one of you can provide the answers. Thank you so much! Pamela
