I have seen it where Alfred?s birth year was 1805 and 1815, not sure which is correct but according to the above mentioned census it is 1815. In the mentioned census, Alfred is 45 Peggy is 35 and there are 7 children with them. John 15, Betsey 12, Henry 9, Eliza 7, Susan 5, Sophia 3, Oris 1. I am very interested in this family. Eliza would become my 2nd Great Grandmother. I know the most about Eliza and Oris I know very little about anyone else. I would love to know who Alfred and Peggy?s parents were so I could continue going back farther in the past. Sadly I cannot get past Alfred?s Parents. In the 1870 Census Alfred is in near by Robeson County with Oris ( also called Orrie) and Matthew Jacobs. In the 1880 Census Alfred is still in Robeson County, Listed as a widower. 2. kyroots via
    3. Melungeons Redbones Croatans And Related Groups-Part One This is the first part of a Series on the Melungeons and those groups known to be related to them, sometimes called 'Little Races.' If you take the male Y DNA test or the female mtDNA test you can trace back thousands of years to where your ancestor originated. This is ONE ancestor that lived thousands of years ago. In 10 generations we have some 1024 grandparents - in the grand scheme of things that one ancestor thousands of years ago is pretty insignificant in the search for your heritage. In a Council for Responsible Genetics article 'The Color of Our Genes' they write; "......in examining less than 1 percent of a person's genetic background, these companies often overstate their tests' ability to say anything significant about a person's heritage, giving the impression that social categories of race and ethnicity are somehow genetically verifiable." What these tests can do is prove a relationship between two males or females who share the same DNA whether they share the same surname or not. They can also prove the Croatan/Lumbee, the Redbones, the Melungeons, Smiling Indians, Brass Ankles and other similar groups are related. Below are the works of anthropologists, ethnologists, historians, etc., many who worked with the Smithsonian in the late 1800s and early 1900s and later who seemed to have no doubt these "Little Races" were related. 1. [LUMBEE] the name Mentora?
    2. Beth Golden via
    3. I'm hoping to solve a mystery regarding the name Mentora. Two of my son-in-law's female ancestors have the name Mentora as part of their name. I have a picture of one of them and she's wearing a feather in the Native American style. More details: Ollie Samantha Mentora Jones, b. 1892 AL, daughter of John Henry Jones: b. 1851 in AL and Wincie Mentora Strickland: b. 1855 in AL Wincie Mentora Strickland, daughter of Solomon F Strickland: b. 1830 in GA and Julia Carter. I believe that the Strickland's originated in the Isle of Wight area of VA and then migrated through NC and GA to AL (still working on that documentation). With this as their origin in America, I'm thinking perhaps there's a connection to the Lumbee. Of course, these Mentora ladies may have been Cherokee if they didn't connect with the family until GA. Thanks so much! Beth Decatur, GA

    2. Hi Sam, So good to see an email with interesting information from you. We are still up here in the Indiana frozen north!! Very, very cold, with lots of snow and more on the way next week! Hope it is better in NC....Hope to get down there when it warms up. We will certainly not be able to travel for some time. Sam, I am wondering if I would be able to find any of my gr gr grandmother's Dial family .... She married in Surry Co 08 Mar 1819.. Name Mary (Polly) Dial, married to Joseph Head. Jane Dial married Joseph's brother, Isaac 05 Jan 1821. Am thinking sisters married brothers. I have gathered much on the Heads, but never have been able to trace the Dial line. (Think I have told you about this before.) I am 83 now, and would really like to learn as much as I can so my kids will have the information. Where would be the best place to continue my "hunt" for Dials. Hope the snow is missing you, please be safe. I know it is more difficult for you people in the south to manage in this bad weather. Take care! 3. LET'S SET THE RECORDS STRAIGHT ! Here is some interesting thoughts and facts about some ancestors of the Lumbee Indians. 1) In the movie "The Patriot", a British Officer was portrayed as killing Gabriel, son of Benjamin Martin [based on the life of Gen. Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox]. In real life the one who killed him was "Chief Sweat", and this occurred between the Little Pee Dee River and Ashpole Swamp in Robeson Co NC. In t.he Indian populations during the Revolution, the Indians here in Robeson Co NC were split like the white people. About a third were Tories, a third were Patriots, and a third neutral. 2) William Lowry, father of Allen Lowrie, of Henry Berry Lowrie, was a Revolutionary War Veteran. His widow, Betty, of Robeson Co NC, applied for a Revolutionary War Pension based on his services. 3) For decades, the Confederate "Home Guards" of Robeson Co NC suffered from false accusations of them killing Allen Lowrie and his son William Lowrie in 1864. This was probably as a result of incomplete research by previous researchers and publications throughout the years. Many have relied on later accounts, which had evidently become fuzzy in memory as the years passed by. In fact, on records, which were created the day after the killings, it is revealed that one of the Lowrie neighbors, Brant Harris, was actually the one who killed them. Harris, a white man, was married and had a family; however, he was known to have fathered children by Indian women in that area. Here I note, that Brant Harris was not on the list of Home Guards here in Robeson Co NC. He evidently acted on his own. 4) Henderson Oxendine, one of the Lowrie Gang. Was hung in the courtyard of the Robeson County Court House in the year 1871 for his part in the Lowrie War. It is interesting to note, that just prior to his death that he and his wife became members of the old Iona Presbyterian Church near McDonald in southcentral Robeson Co NC. -- Sam West Lumberton, Robeson Co NC e-mail: sam.west.1@gmail.com "Not all of us can do great things, but we all can do small things in a great way." author unknown
