In many cases you can get everything. You have to look in the catalog for the county and see what has been filmed. I do a lot in Allegany county and the Surrogate's Index, will books, administration books, guardian books, and will boxes have been all microfilmed. The will boxes have all the goodies that you are talking about. At around $5 per film, and 5 or 10 cents to copy a page, it is a lot cheaper than the $75 + to send for it from the county. But not all counties are that completely filmed. I have never been to FHC to look up probate records. I have collected last summer many wills from Putnam County. When you go the surrogate there they order a file and you can look at the file. (all original documents) Then you tell them what you want copied. I always copied the entire file. When you look up wills at LDS do you "get the whole file"? A will comes with the actual declaration page and then the Proving of the will. After the person dies the administrator has to take the will to the Surrogate Court and inform the next of kin. That usually tells you where the next of kin reside. In some cases wills are contested and testimony is taken. I have two such wills. Incredible information can be found there. People are sworn in and tell their relationship to the deceased. You can then get the names of their parents. I am wondering if FHC copies all that kind of stuff or just the declaration page. Thanks. That is very good to know. Sometimes a simple thing like a newspaper clippings notifying the families that the will is to be probated is full of info.
