Hi, Gerry, I have just begun to venture into research with English records and am not sure that I can offer much here. I don't understand all the names of the places and abbreviations on the census. I did find this Mary Luddington on the 1841 census for Borough of Devenport, Parish of Stoke Damerell, Bote Dentine, folio 9, line number 23. She is head of household. Mary Luddington, 40, Ind, Y (born in country) Mary Rowly, 40, F. S., Y Mary Lambert, 20, F. S., Y That is the extent of her household. I assume that the two women with the designation "F. S." means "family servant" because of you mention of Mary Lambert's inheritance and that the "Ind" for Mary means that she is of independent means. Sophia Luddington Whipple's mother's name was Sophey E. per 1861 census. Sophey E. was born in Newport, Isle of Wight about 1810. The death index gives her name as Sophia Ellen O'R Whipple, age 57. Registration for death is 1st quarter of 1868. I did try to find some connection for the Whipples and the Luddingtons but I could not. I did see this record for a Joseph...don't know if he might be the father of your Joseph. Kent, Surrey, London: - Canterbury Marriage Licences, 1751-1780 Volume 31 Volume 31 fol 167 1778 County: Kent Country: England Joseph Luddington of St Mary Dover sailmaker bach (22) & Mary Wood of the s sp (22), at St Mary D. 20 Aug 1778 Gerry, if you want downloads of the census pages, contact me off list and I will send them to you. Rootsweb won't accept pictures. Hope that was of some help, Elaine
