>From The Star Press, Mon., May 24, 2010 Larry L. Dorton, 75 Gaston - Larry L. Dorton, 75, went to be with the Lord Saturday morning, May 22, 2010, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born December 22, 1934 in Muncie the son of Chester H. and Florence M. (Ludington) Dorton and graduated from Selma High School in 1953. Larry served in the US Navy during the Korean War of the USS Aeolus that laid cables in the ocean to trap enemy submarines. He also received his Bachelor's Degree from Ball Sate University in 1960. Mr. Dorton was the owner of Stylz Unlimited Full Service Salon. He has been employed with Ritchie Insurance, Inc. and previously owned and operated Oliver-Dorton Insurance and Dorton-Jones-Manning Insurance and worked for Bowling Promotions, Inc. He was a life member of AMVETS Post #12, a member of Selma American Legion Post #437, Ball State University Alumni Association, Ball State University Fellows of the President Club, Ball State University Beneficence Society, Ball State University Cardinal Varsity Club, where he was past president 1984-1985 and was on the board of director's from 1981 to 1993. He was also a member of the USGA, the National Rifle Association, and Ducks Unlimited, Inc. Larry received the Benny Award from Ball State University in 1986 and he was made an honorary coach of the Red and White Football Game at Ball State University. Surviving are his loving wife of twenty-seven years, Sheliah J. (Heavenridge) Dorton; his loving sister and caregiver, Dorothy Bowman, Muncie; five aunts and uncles, Wilma Hudson, Muncie, Henry N. Dorton, Muncie, Rozetta Marriotte, Hilton Head Island, SC, Harley Ludington, Ft. Myers, FL, and Robert Grafmiller, Southfield, MI; his brother-in-law, Larry Heavenridge, Muncie; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold J. Dorton; and several cousins, aunts and uncles including Edith and Darrell Jones. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Pastor John Young of Riverside United Methodist Church officiating with Military Rites by the Selma American Legion. Cremation will follow. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday or one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
