    1. Clyde Ludington
    2. Hi, Everybody, A couple of years ago I purchased some letters on Ebay. They were written by Clyde Ludington to his mother, Alice, while he was in college. This was in 1905-08. I have tried to find a descendant of Clyde who might be interested in having these letters. Not being successful, I put the file away but found it again today while cleaning some drawers in the office. So, I thought I would check with the list to see if anybody here might know of a descendant or where I might look for one. Clyde Ludington married Nellie Reed in 1917. They had three children, Erwin Clyde (died in infancy), Lincoln (born 1922, died 2003) and Alice (born abt. 1926). I don't know anything about Alice beyond her being on the 1930 census as a four year old child. Lincoln died in Baltimore February 16, 2003. I have asked genealogy volunteers from the area to search for a obit but none was found. I don't know anything about a marriage or children for him. Clyde and Nellie were divorced but I don't know dates. Does anybody on the list have any ideas about how to get these letters to a descendant? I welcome all suggestions. Thanks, Elaine

    1. Re: [LUDDINGTON] DAR Patriot Index
    2. Hi, I remember you but I am not sure I grasped your name because there were so many emails to the Lud list when your family joined the group. At the time, I was not a subscriber but merely browsed the list from time to time. Ron had sent an email to Rachel and me asking if we knew anything about the Rev War activities of Nathaniel because there was a lady interested and she could not find the details. I quizzed him and he said she was from Indiana. I checked my old DAR patriot index (would love to have a new one but they are $100..so I guess I will wait for a while) and found that Nathaniel, husband of Polly Stewart is a known patriot and asked him to give the info to her. We lived in Colorado for a period of time but I was not in the DAR then. My husband worked for Martin Marietta and we lived in Littleton. DAR is much more than genealogy. I hope you will be active and have lots of fun. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you. Take care, Elaine

    1. Re: [LUDDINGTON] Re: [LUDDINGTON COMFORT
    2. Hi, Ron, Yes, absolutely, some of it came from you, anyway. I was trying to present my interpretation of the Comforts and how I keep track of them. Except for the two infants, they are all in one straight line and I think that is significant. I know that Comfort is a surname as well as a given name, and, perhaps, it does originate somewhere in one of the wives ancestry as Dottie suggested but the name Comfort, as a given name for Luds ends with my Comfort B. Ludington, who died during the Civil War. Thanks, everybody, for your patience. Now this theory is laid out in the archives. Maybe, someone will find it while doing a search and email me with a few clues.

    3. My study pretty well follows the lines that Elaine has laid out. Her Lafayette shows as being b in 1800 in NY and he had a son, George W Ludington b in 1832 in Onondaga co NY. (George ended up in Kansas where he shows in census records for years.) it was shortly after George was b that Fayette shows in CC OH for the wedding of Abner. He must have stayed there for a time as his next son, Comfort B Lud ,was born on OH. Fayette then moves on to IL where he shows with family in 1850. He then seems to disapear while Comfort B later shows in Minn living with another family in 1860 or so. Comfort B joined the US Army in 1863/4 and was killed by Indians near the stockade in Pome de Terre, MN. He never married that we know of. Does this jibe with your /study/theories Elaine?? Elisha and Abigail (Pierson) had three boys. Two disappeared somewhere and left Comfort #1, Capt. Comfort. Comfort #1, Capt. Comfort, married Elizabeth Nickerson and had six boys. All seemed to leave the area. Some came to Clinton County, Ohio and some went on to Indiana. Zalmon went to upstate NY and died there. Source: Martha Rabatin's book. Obviously, there was communication among the family members, otherwise, how could Rebecca have known to send authorization for Abner's marriage? So, I think the first Lud family settlers in Clinton County, Ohio sent back the word that pickings were pretty good there and the others should come on out. Which is the reason we find so many of them on the 1840 census in Clinton County, Ohio. Comfort #2 married Mary Mulkin (Source: Martha Rabatin's book) and had three boys by 1806. (I think four...but can't prove it) The boys were Ananais, Thomas and Comfort #3. Then there seems to be a space of several years before he had more children, ending with Abner, born abt. 1816. You have quoted the certificate authorizing Abner's marriage to be from his mother, Rebecca. It seems to me that person has to be Rebecca Dayton. Source: A Dayton Record. Ananais went, Thomas went, why wouldn't Comfort #3 have followed them to Ohio. That a Comfort Ludington married an Ann Holdcroft (maiden name spelled many different ways on records) has been documented. He did not live long after the marriage. We can only guess that Abner might have come to help because his half-brother was ill and then chose to marry the widow. Comfort #3 is to Thomas, husband of Sarah Wakeman, as is Ananias, Thomas (husband of Sarah Webster), and Abner, a nephew. I have struggled with the Illinois records quite a bit but can find no documentation for my branch of the tree there between the 1850 census and a marriage in 1861 of my Lud ancestor, Rebecca, daughter of Lafayette. Abner had purchased land there but did not stay long. By 1860 he was in Clinton County, Indiana. Why was Lafayette auuthorized to stand for the family instead of Ananais or Thomas? I think it might be because he was the oldest son. All of this is theory...would love to prove it but don't have a clue how to do that. I know some of this is confusing to the newbies. They need to be grateful that I did not throw in a discussion of the trio of Lafayettes. <smile> We will save that for another day. Will email you privately regarding DAR. Elaine

    2. ELAINE, THIS OUTLINES OF YOURS IS SIMILAR TO WHAT I HAVE FELT TOO, BUT I CANNOT DETERMINE THAT THE COMFORT WHO MARRIES ANN IN CC, OHIO IN 1834 IS COMFORT #3. WHAT IS YOUR THINKING TO DETERMINE THAT? HOLDCRAFTS ARE LIVING NEXT DOOR TO MY THOMAS AND COMFORT # 2 WOULD HAVE BEEN A BROTHER TO THOMAS, WHO WAS THE OLDEST OF CAPT. COMFORT'S KIDS, SO ARE YOU THINKING THAT COMFORT #3 WAS A NEPHEW OF THOMAS AND MIGHT HAVE BEEN LIVING WITH HIM OR WHAT. I DON'T KNOW WHY COMFORT 2'S SON, COMFORT # 3, WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE AND ASSUME WE WON'T EVER KNOW FOR SURE. ESPECIALLY IF THERE IS NO DOCUMENTATION ON THOSE 2 MARRIAGES. I DO HAVE THE CERTIFICATE WHERE ABNER MARRIES ANN AND HE IS UNDERAGE. FAYETTE BRINGS PERMISSIOIN FROM REBECCA FOR THE MARRIAGE. WAS COMFORT 2 DEAD AT THAT TIME AND REBECCA, HIS SECOND WIFE, THE SURVIVOR?? NO, THERE IS NOTHING ON IT SAYING FAYETTE IS A RELATIVE, JUST SHORT AND SWEET PERMISSION FROM HIS MOTHER, REBECCA. SO, ABNER AND COMFORT COULD HAVE BEEN HALF BROTHERS. AND IS YOUR THINKING THEN THAT FAYETTE IS THE SON OF COMFORT 2 AND MARY MULKIN? THAT WOULD MAKE HIM FULL BROTHER TO COMFORT #3 AND HALF BROTHER TO ABNER, I GUESS. DID YOU DETERMINE ANYTHING FROM IROQUIS AND WHY HE WAS THERE? WHAT PUZZLES ME IS WHY CC OHIO. WHY ARE SOME OF THE FAMILY THERE AS MY THOMAS, OR SO I THOUGHT, WAS THE FIRST. I HAVE OFTEN THOUGHT THE NICKERSON'S GOT HIM THERE AFTER HIS WIFE'S DAD DIED (WAKEMAN) IN CT. (1814) JOSHUA NICKERSON WAS MUCH EARLIER THERE. I AM HOPING JJB CAN UNRAVEL SOME OF THE MYSTERY ON ANN AND ABNER VS. STEPHEN ABNER AND ALL THAT MESS. THERE ARE A LOT OF COURT CASES THAT MIGHT SHED SOME LIGHT, AND I HAVE ASKED JJB TO COPY SOME FOR ME. (FROM cc, INDIANA) THIS IS SO CONFUSING, AND JJB AND ALL NEWCOMERS MUST BE LOST WITH ALL THESE COMFORTS WHICH HAVE FOR YEARS MADE US 'UNCOMFORTABLE' BUT YOU HAVE OUTLINED IT WELL HERE, AND I HOPE IT IS CORRECT. I HAVE WONDERED IF THE COMFORT IS A FAMILY NAME AS THE HISTORY OF CC OHIO DOES MENTION IN ONE OR TWO LINES A 'MOSES COMFORT'. HAS ANYONE EVER TRIED TO FOLLOW THE COMFORT NAME TO SEE IF IT TIES IN SOMEWHERE WITH LUDS? OR IS IT JUST ONE OF THOSE NAMES LIKE MERCY, GRACE, TEMPERANCE, CHASTITY, ETC. I DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS A GIRL NAMED COMFORT AND WOULD LIKE TO HAVE YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP. I WILL WRITE SEPARATELY ABOUT DAR. EXCUSE MY CAPS AS MY EYES ARE NOT GREAT. LOVE, DOTTIE
