Does anyone have a copy of old gravestones of Putnam County by Barbara Best Buys
In the event I make it to NY this summer I have the following questions. Who has been to NY in the past? Where did you pull records from? What Libraries did you visit? What Cemeteries did you visit? And what did you find at the above? I always make a shopping list of things to look into before I go. I am planning on a 4 day trip to that area. I am considering going to Poughkeepsie to look for wills. And Pawling Cemetery. Has anyone been to Henry's grave in Patterson? Does anyone have suggestions where to go or what they might need time permitting? Mary
I agree with Ron here. Family stories always get changed over time. Someone remembers wrong, hears wrong, whatever. There is no evidence for a Joseph, unless Reynolds was Joseph. He married Stella Harden in 1879, and disappears. I haven't been able to find any trace of either Reynolds OR Stella in the 1880 census, or beyond. But, that wedding was 20 years before Harvey and Gertrude. Could the Joseph in the story have been a cousin or other relative? Age wise, it seems as if Hiram MUST be Harvey. I wonder if with 2 Harveys already in the household it was just too confusing. 1850:Danville, Vermilion, IL Ludington, Henry (Harvey) 305 56 Mary 52 Elsie 26 Phoebe 24 John 21 Harvey 15 James A 7 Stephen T 5 ****************** 1860:IL Vermillion Danville Ludington John Q 31 IL Carpenter Clara 26 IL Mynette 8 IL ------------------------------------------------- Ludington Harvey 66 NY Surveyor H S-male 24 IL Carpenter Catherine 27 IN Crandle Thomas 8 IL Ludington Reynolds 1 IL Hiram 2/12 IL ******************* 1870: IL Vermilion County Danville Luddington James (Jas) 27 machinist IL Marietta 20 IN --------------------------------------------- Luddington Harvey 35 pattern maker IL Catherine 37 IN Jas. 17 moulder IL Reynolds 13 IL Hiram 11 IL Frank 9 IL Harvey 77 NY ---------------------------------------------- young Shoemaker family then: ---------------------------------------------- Ludington John 41 carpenter IL Clarrissa 37 keeping house OH Ella 10 IL Shoemaker Minette 18 IL Heller Augusta 3 IL Shoemaker George ?/12 IL ****************** 1880:Danville, Vermilion, Illinois Catharine LUDDINGTON Wid 38 IN ENGLAND VA ------------------------------------------------ Andrew C. In my study I show Harvey Samuel Ludington 1835/1872 had 4 kids. Reynolds, Hiram, Harvey 3, and Frank, all b in the 1860 to 1870 era. No mention of a Joseph and none appears in the census info below. This comes from the Vermilion County, Illinois Marriage Book - 1853-1874 Ludington, Harvey S. to Crandall, Catharine on 24 December 1857. She was a Williams before marriage to a Crandall.. He appears in the 1860 census as H T Ludington, age 24, b IL, wife Catherine also shows as age 27, b IN and two sons Randell (Reynolds?)age 1 b IL and Hirum, age 2/12 b IL In the July 1870 census of Danville IL, Harvey appears as age 35, pattern maker, b IL; Wife Catherine, age 37, b IN; and his father Harvey age 77 b NY; along with James Ludington, Jr age 17 moulder in training , b IL; Reynolds age 13 b IL; Hiram age 9, b IL; Frank age 1?, b IL. I SURE BELIEVE IN YOU! DGO
Maybe if Mary and I combine our info, we'll come up with something new. Mildred
It was half right, Dottie! Nancy
I HAVE SEARCHED ALL DAY AND CANNOT FIND THAT I EVER HAD THE WILL OF 1805. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I WAS GIVEN INFORMATION THAT COMFORT (CAPT.) DID LEAVE A WILL WHEN HE DIED IN 1805 AND I HAVE THE LIST OF CHILDREN, BUT SEE NO JOSEPH. HOWEVER, I HOPE SOMEONE ON THE LIST HAS THE WILL; HAS SEEN DOCUMENTATION ON IT, ETC. MARTY HAS A COPY OF HIS PENSION RECORDS IN HER BOOK PLUS THE NAMES OF THE CHILDREN FROM THE WILL BUT NO COPY OF THE WILL ITSELF. DGO
OH, HOW GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU, MILDRED. YES, YOU TWO MUST GET TOGETHER, AND WE NEED YOUR INPUTE FOR SURE.
Carolyn and I were in NY in 1996 and had much the same experience. We found more info from roaming thru old cemeteries. Mildred
No, I've been here all along. Sometimes don't do much research. But have been furnishing what I have recorded so far to a few granddaughters who are interested. I have tried to contact Mary and have sent her my phone no. Have no idea what happened to Jackie. Mildred
Dottie. from your 1st msg re Mary, I sent her a msg asking where she was. Now that I know she is in Scottsdale,. I will send her another msg w/my phone no. Mildred
I have a copy of that Smith-Bryant data ....... Thanks anyway. As mentioned before Dutchess is in the process of finally getting a historian. Not sure if he has been actually hired as yet but his credentials looked great from all the hype that was floating around. I never had much success in Dutchess in the 3 times I was there as no one seemed to know where records were kept and if any were even around. The part of Ontario in which I live has a rich Quaker heritage as a whole section of Oxford co was deeded to Quaker families from Dutchess Co NY in the 1812-1825 period. Some names are Ferris, Sackrider, Emigh, Avey, Cohoe, etc and many families still farm there although the Quaker religoius part has long dissapeared. Norwich Ontario has a street called Quaker St. and the little museum ther has many quaker artifacts.
