I have been to Dutchess and Putnam. Visited the large library in Poukeepsie and the Historical Soc. Seen the graves of Henry/Sybil etc in Patterson, have pics too. Been to Pawling twp offices and gone thru the Lud records. Vistited with Marcia Ludington .Baker nearby too. Talked with her sister-in-law several times. Been thru the records in Putnam Archives (wonderfull stuff!) Talked with Vinnie DiQuinno (author of book on Sybil) and compared notes. Visted library in Mahopac, Carmel etc. Visited remains of Henry's mill. I'm sure I missed most of the Dutchess records because no one seemed to know where they were. There are some pics I took on My Family.Com. Fred will you let Mary into that site please?? she needs a password! Right on the money Mr. Wiz. The only problem I am having is with Joseph. Everyone in the family says Grandma Gertrude was engaged to Joseph when he died. Grandpa Harvey, Josephs brother, went to Chicago for the funeral and met and married Gertrude. I cannot find any documentation for this though. This is my stone wall. Must not have been too confusing because there is a Harvey in the family from Harvey of 1793 all the way to the present time. 1835, 1860, 1916, 1947, 1975, etc. My uncle Harvey has a son and a grandson named Harvey. There is no way my grandfather Harvey could have been born in 1850. His father and mother, Harvey Ludington II and Catherine Crandall were married in Danville, Illinois on the 24th of December, 1857. I have the marriage certificate. Witnessed by John Short, county clerk for the county of Vermillion, city of Danville. I also have my grandfathers marriage certificate when Harvey Ludington III and Gertrude Gilbert were married in Chicago, Illinois county of Cook They were married 7 March 1898. Grandpa was born on 19 March 1860. Gertrude was engaged to Harvey's brother but passed away. Harvey went up for the funeral, met Gertrude and they were married. Moved to Seattle, Washington. Another fable was that Harvey rode with the Pony Express. Checking the dates the Pony Express existed, Harvey would have been 3 years old riding to Denver, fighting indians and weather. I have the documentation on all of these. You're right. In 1910, 1920, and 1930 he gives his age as 60, 70, and 80 respectively. But, there is still NO Harvey associated with that group of that age either. Fred, have you seen (or made copies of) the originals on the marriage certs? Was there any additional info there? Age? etc? -----Original Message----- From: ron ludington [mailto:ronlud@execulink.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2006 8:18 AM To: LUDDINGTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LUDDINGTON] Joseph Ludington Wonderful info there Rachel. Family stories always get changed over time. Someone remembers wrong, hears wrong, whatever. There is no evidence for a Joseph, unless Reynolds was Joseph. He married Stella Harden in 1879, and disappears. I haven't been able to find any trace of either Reynolds OR Stella in the 1880 census, or beyond. But, that wedding was 20 years before Harvey and Gertrude. Could the Joseph in the story have been a cousin or other relative? Age wise, it seems as if Hiram MUST be Harvey. I own the following books and will do lookups Old Gravestones of Dutchess County NY Vol II 1924 Poucher Town Records, Fredericktown to Kent, 1788-1841 This book was a bit of a disappointment. I does have an index but mostly can only help place a person. I.e. Comfort is on page 2. It places him in 1788 In Fredrick's town as a Fence Viewer (spelling Ludenton) and The Commemorative and Biographical Records of Dutchess County NY PT I and PT II no Ludington's but may have other family names.
