    1. Re: [LUDDINGTON] R W Ludington
    2. Hi, Paul, Ron will be able to fill you in on a lot more of the details but this fellow was Reuben Winchell Ludington of Lawrence, Kansas. His daughter, Angeline, was the wife of Judge Foster. I think we have a picture of him on the MyFamily site. I don't think you have stopped by to explore the site. I do seem to remember that Rachel sent you an invite with user name and password. You might like to review the postings I made there from the genealogy periodical, The American Genealogist, (TAG) because it was a very well researched article regarding the correct name of the wife of William Luddington, the immigrant. The author cites numerous references in England. We do hope you will be able to make it to the reunion in Ohio in 2008. If the children ask you to include Walt Disney World in the trip, also, let us know. We live in the neighborhood. Elaine

    3. R W was Reuben Winchell Ludington but they have his age incorrect as he was b in 1827 so would be abt 63. The Foster mentioned was probably his son-in-law m to his daughter Angeline. The Atchison Daily Globe (Atchison, Kansas) 1888 June 28 "An ex-citizen of Topeka, who was once a thief, has become conscience stricken and now the mails are now flooded with conscience money. Among others to whom money has been restored is the city of Topeka and R. W. Ludington. The former has received $80 and the latter, $20. The letters bear the Los Angeles, Cal. postmark. Mr. Ludington's money came addressed to Judge Foster, a slip addressed in a feminine hand informing him that it belonged to his father-in-law, who is Mr. Ludington." R W Ludington b abt 1863 I have him on a ship going to New York in 1891, it says he is single aged 28 and a gent, but it dos not say were he was born? I cannot find him in any of my lists or on any census? I am wondering if he was on Holiday over here? I think he was travailing with the Family of Judge E Foster aged 50, his wife aged 49 and there two children Beatrice 7 and Lilian 5. It would to find him. 2. Reminds me of a charming fantasy novel I read in my youth, "Lud - in - the Mist" by Hope Mirrlees, originally published in 1926. A respectable burgher of a somewhat staid village set in a rustic sort of medieval world, sets out for Fairyland on the western border and changes ensue. I believe it has been republished a few times since I read it in the 60's! 3. A little something of intrest....... According to 'A Dictionary of Lincolnshire Place-names' by the late Professor Cameron, Luddington is thought to mean 'the farmstead, village associated with or called after Luda' from the Old English personal noun Luda which is also probably the first element of Ludborough and Ludford' It is strange that Ludborough and Ludford are both near Louth, which comes from the River Lud (th and d being interchangeable in Lincolnshire - a ladder = lather for instance). Cameron says the river Lud probably means 'the loud one'. Luddington is in the Isle of Axholme, whose inhabitants were (and still are) very independent, having their own Family History Society while all other parts of 'old' Lincolnshire are covered by the Lincolnshire Family History Society! I see in the Protestation returns the surname is scattered in north Lincolnshire (Lindsey), but it must be remembered that few survive for South Lincolnshire (Kesteven). Regards Paul

Can you tie together the relationships of many people? If so, as a public service, you might like to help the Christchurch, New Zealand, Police Department find some criminals. Christchurch police are targeting the ten families with the most prolific offenders - and have taken the unusual step of preparing family trees to help keep track of all the family members. By knowing who is related to whom, police are able to identify possible suspects much more quickly than by regular investigative means. It seems that the ten criminal families have cost New Zealand taxpayers $53 million to bring them to justice. The $53 million figure is based on a Treasury study that calculated the cost of crime. The figure, which is known to be conservative, covers police, court, and prison costs, but excludes the cost of youth offences dealt with in alternative ways. Of the 177 members of the top crime families living in the Canterbury region, 127 have come to police notice. Over five years they were arrested for 1808 offences, ranging from burglary to assault, vehicle thefts, and drugs.
