I think it's more Native American Luds: This is from the manataba messenger website: http://critonline.com/index.shtml The Colorado River Indian Tribes include four distinct Tribes - the Mohave, Chemehuevi, Hopi and Navajo. There are currently about 3,500 active Tribal members. The CRIT Reservation was created in 1865 by the Federal Government for "Indians of the Colorado River and its tributaries," originally for the Mohave and Chemehuevi, who had inhabited the area for centuries. People of the Hopi and Navajo Tribes were relocated to the reservation in later years. The reservation stretches along the Colorado River on both the Arizona and California side. It includes almost 300,000 acres of land, with the river serving as the focal point and lifeblood of the area. The primary community in the CRIT Reservation is Parker, Arizona, which is located on a combination of Tribal land, leased land that is owned by CRIT and land owned by non-Native Americans. There are other, smaller communities on the reservation, including Poston, located 10 miles south of Parker. Poston was the site in World War II of one of the United States' largest Japanese internment camps, where thousands of Japanese-Americans were held over a three-year period. The camp sites are now home to a monument dedicated to those who died and suffered while in internment, and CRIT is currently in the process of creating a museum to commemorate the era. The primary economic activity on the CRIT Reservation has always been agriculture, going back to the days when mesquite trees were plentiful along the banks of the river and were relied upon for everything from food to cooking to Tribal traditions and ceremonies. CRIT continues to have a strong farming and agricultural industry, including growing cotton, alfalfa and sorghum. However, in recent years the Tribal economy has diversified greatly, and now includes forays and businesses in several different fields. Sand and gravel, real estate development and retail stores have all been part of the Tribes' economic development efforts. And over the past decade, a heavy emphasis has turned toward tourism, as CRIT opened the BlueWater Resort and Casino in Parker and has endeavored to attract both cultural and recreational tourists to the area. -----Original Message----- From: luddington-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:luddington-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Barbara Campbell Sent: Friday, April 13, 2007 9:15 PM To: LUDDINGTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [LUDDINGTON] Darci and a Mary Luddington http://critonline.com/crit_contents/messenger/2005_06.pdf There is a picture of a Darci and a Mary Luddington at this link. Darci and Mary are members of Colorado River Indian tribe near Blythe CA. They are believed to have descended from James Ludington of CT who left CT to go to the gold fields of CA back in the mid 1800's. He left some descends behind that still bear his name. We can find no other connection to the Luddington names use in CA Indian tribes so we have chosen the above scenario. Several CA census reports show Ludidington names in the various Indian reservations right up to the last 1930 census. Hi Elaine, You want to look at the Family History Library Catalog and do a locality search for where your Ludington lived. Search on the county and the state level. You can search the catalog at home on the net at familysearch.org, so be prepared when you head for the FHC. Print out from the catalog the films you would like to look at. If you are lucky, some of the films may be at the center already. Take your pedigree chart and family groups of the people you are working on. It is easier for the consultants at the Center to help you if they can see it laid out in chart form. The level of expertise of consultants vary, but some are very good and may be able to give you some good suggestions. Anyway, search everything on microfilm for the locality and time period that you have. Any one of the sources may have the clue you need. Land records are very important. Deeds often give a prior residence, relationships. Look beyond the death year as some land is transferred when probate is complete and I have found as much as twenty years after a persons death. Online, study the locality - the county and surrounding towns. Good luck! Hi Elaine and all, I'm not sure from the posts which FHC you are going to, but I live fairly close to Pawling Cemetery cemetery should you want to locate Joseph's grave. (Mary found it for me!) Also for those who are interested, the big Putnam history Sybil Ludington celebration/reenactment is coming up later this month, April 27th and 28th in Carmel. I researched Dutchess on at least two seperate occasions. Not much luck either time as no one seemed to be able to find any old records that might have been valuable. Eveyone seemed to think they existed but did not know just where. We searhed the libray in Poughkeesie, and several other places there. At one time ( about 10 years back?) I was directed to an old Grand Union? grocery store in Poughkeepsie and met with two nice ladies who were sorting boxes of info in which was supposed to be much of Dutchess's past history. However I was unable to get at any of it and they thot it would be made avialable at some time in the near future as soon as Dutchess had hired a historian. I heard that one had been hired a years or so ago and I sent off an e mail to him but never got an answer. Dutchess............THE BLACK HOLE !! Ron ----- Original Message ---- From: M.
