Mary Inoue, Scottsdale, Arizona USA Elaine, Trips to the FHC can be frustrating. The problem is old records are scarce and spread out. It would be nice if one particular group from an area farmed them all in but they don't. I have records from the Putnam County Historian as well as the Putnam county Historical Society. I think FHC has done their best to collect as many as possible and they put them on Pedigree Resource files. These files are particularly useful in the Dutchess/Putnam area as the woman who copied the work was the head of the area. She made notes in the file that have been very beneficial to my research. (i.e., she'll note DAR family bible and pages, she'll note, might have moved to Indiana, ...) So these also are a good record to look through wile there. I purchases set 17 Discs 81-85 for my Washburn research. Perhaps you can find some clues in the notes there on files that might contain Luddington names. A sad note. On March 21st, My Father, Robert Eugene Weeks passed away. He was 81 years old, born August 19, 1925 in Mount Kisco, New York. He died from complications due to radiation. It caused aspiration pneumonia which he was to weak to fight. He was the son of Kenneth Teed Weeks and Mary Elizabeth Hultz(s) (The Hults name was spelled with a S until my Grandmother was born and it was changed on her birth certificate for reasons unknown to me- Hults was crossed out and Hultz was written in) Mary was the daughter of Eugene Lawrence Hults and Fannie Washburn. Eugene was born March 1875 in Farmers Mills, Kent, Putnam County NY and died in 1954. Fannie was Born May 1879 in Pawling, Dutchess County NY and died in 1951. Both are buried in Pawling Cemetery. Fannie was the daughter of Daniel Washburn and Sarah Roe. Daniel was born Nov 29 1850 in Beekman, Dutchess County NY and died Oct 23 1928. He is the son of Zebulon Washburn and Syrena Luddington. Zebulon was born May 13 1805 in Carmel, Putnam County NY and died June 13 1863 in Beekman, Dutchess County NY. He Married Syrena in 1834. She was born July 14 1814 and died March 5 1896. Syrena was the daughter of Joseph Ludington and Susan Salmon. Beyond Joseph I can go no further. An obituary will be printed in NY referencing his connection to the Ludingtons and Washburn's. If you happen across it, you will know how it fits in. This Abigail Ludd appears to have been b abt 1790 or near that date as she had her first child as shown below by 1811 making her to be about 21 or so. Guilford CT seems to be the location too. I cannot find an Abigail that fits in...........perhaps she was a Luddington widow when she m Byington? For full details see the book Child Apprentices in America from Christ's Hospital, London 1617-1778 by Peter Coldham. The page numbers refer to the page in that book where the child apprentice immigrant ancestor will be found. The book is available in many libraries or it can be ordered through Amazon.com or you can request a lookup from Bonnie Weber Christ's Hospital was established in 1553 for the benefit of orphaned children or those impverished or orphaned children made homeless. If they were legitimate children of free men of the City of London, over four years of age and free from obvious infirmity, they were to be educated and prepared either for entrance to a university or apprenticeship to a trade. >From the late 17th century, up to 150 children were admitted annually to "Bluecoat School" on recommendation of their parishes, and a further ninety or so under the terms of charitable endowments. But as early as 1617 large numbers of these children left England to serve apprenticeships in America. Beginning with those children apprenticed to the Virginia Company in 1617, about 1,000 Christ's Hospital students left England to take up such apprenticeships. The "Children's Registers" are housed in the manuscript department of the London Guildhall, and it is from these that Mr. Coldham extracted data on child emigrants. The entries are in chronological order and in a slightly abbreviated form. Given are the name of the child, his date of birth or baptism, date of admission, native parish, the name and occupation of his father, date of discharge, the name of the person to whom he was apprenticed, and the place in America where he was to serve his apprenticeship. In my Ludington records I show a Lucy Abigail Ludington being m to a John W Crenshaw in Perry AL in April of 1842. So you may well be descended from that line. They may have had a son called John W Crenshaw who m Anne Stuart and had your father Claire Tappen Crenshaw? This is only a guess on my part as I have few Crenshaw records but it would seem to work? I still live in the same home. My husband is Walter Franklin Ramey, Sr. My Parents were: John Binion Crenshaw and Lillie Gleaton Crenshaw: both are deceased. My grandfather was Gerald Mathews Crenshaw, His wife: Fannie Binion Cocke Crenshaw, both of Marion,AL (Perry Co.) most of their lives except for a short period in Mellbourne, Florida. My father was an only child and so am I. My great-grandfather was John Lemuel Crenshaw bn. NOV 27,1847; DIED Oct 18,1914: He married Carrie (Caroline) Mathews on Dec. 28,1868. Both lived all their lives in Perry Co,. AL. They had eight children, six lived to maturity, but I know little about any of them except my great-aunt Mattie McAllister Crenshaw, bn.Apr. 12, 1882; died Aug 8, 1946; married Robert Sturdivant King (date unknown), they had no children. > >My great-great grandfather was John Washington Crenshaw born May 15, 1817, Greenville, South Carolina. I know from his grandfather John Barnhill's will that he was in Perry Co., AL in 1824. He died May 25, 1892, and is buried in the family plot in Marion, AL. He married first: Frances S. Spencer, bn July 6, 1819, died Sept. 23, 1841. His second marriage May 25, 1842, was to Lucy Abigail Luddington, from Goshen, Connecticut, daughter of Theron S. Luddington and Abigail Baldwin, She came to Marion to teach at the Marion Female Seminary. This couple had seven children, one died as an infant. > >My great- great- great grandfather was Joseph Crenshaw born March 30, 1784,in Virginia. maybe Charles City area? Lived in Greenville, S. C. at some point; married Susan West, daughter of Katharine West Barnhill and John Barnhill, date of marriage is not recorded in any family papers I have found. Joseph died in Marion, AL July 27, 1840, and is buried in Marion, AL. Susan was born approx 1803 and died Dec 16, 1891: family records state she also was from Greenville, S.C.she is buried in Marion, AL.They had four sons: two died in 1840 and the other in1848. The oldest son, John Washington Crenshaw was appointed guardian of his younger siblings according to Records of Orphans Court Of Perry Co. AL in 1844. One daughter Mary Crenshaw married Carlos Reese of Marion,AL. > >The Crenshaw Family Bible that I have and a farm ledger in John Washington Crenshaw's handwriting state that Joseph Crenshaw was the son of Nathaniel (Nathan) Crenshaw. My research in South Carolina reflected Nathaniel Crenshaw(s) in Laurens, Newberry and Union Counties. A Joseph Crenshaw/Cranshaw is listed in the index to the 1800 Census of South Carolina by Brent H. Holcomb pg, 55, Laurens District or County. I can document all the information above this point. My missing link is Nathaniel Crenshaw or Cranshaw. I do not know where he lived, his birth or death dates or who he married. I have some information on the Crenshaw family in South Carolina that states there was a Thomas Crenshaw from Lunenburg, Virginia, who moved to S.C. and had several sons including: Nathaniel born 1757, Matthew, died 1802; Daniel died 1794 or 1795 Joseph, William,Abraham, Thomas and Jesse. Research by Hugh Crenshaw of Picckens, S.C. ( Hugh died in 1999) shows a Joseph Crenshaw from Lunen! >burg, Va. had a son Thomas who had the sons named above and states that he found information recording the deaths of both Nathaniel and Daniel Crenshaw in 1794. If Nathaniel died in 1794 has son Joseph Crenshaw would have been about ten years old. He and has mother whose name I do not know may have lived with her family or other relatives and moved to Alabama with them before or about the time Alabama became a state in 1819. The Alabama land was opened for homesteading in 1816. There are extensive records in the Perry County Courthouse in Marion, AL that I have not had time to read. I hope someone on this site can provide some info. to help me link Nathaniel and his wife to previous generations. Thanks. Looks like Patricia was previously married to a Luddington. Since Patricia was approximately 80 ? she would have been born around 1927- Do we have any Luds in the Colorado area who are shown being born around 1920's and marrying a Patricia?
