Jean Lucas was born in 1631, probably in France but possibly in Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany. He married Elizabeth Rollaire. The Lucas family is supposed to have been French Huguenots who left France for Germany as a result of the religious persecution. Jean Lucas and family are recorded in the French Reformed churchbooks at Otterberg, Germany. There is some indication that the Lucases came from New Rochelle but no solid proof. Jean's son Francis/Francois left the Palatinate in the first party in 1709, going first to London and then to New York before settling in New Jersey. I have not seen any information on this Lucas line earlier than Jean Lucas though. Possibly the Lucas name was not uncommon in France at one time?
