I am also looking for the LUCAS surname in Broome, Chemung, & Stueben counties of NY. Though my search starts somewhat later than Carolyn's. I can't help but wonder if there is something bogus about the Pension Records of my g grandfather William B. LUCAS. According to the Civil War Pension Records of William B. LUCAS; he was born in Hartford County, CN, in 1810, had been married 3 times by 1865. 1st wife is unknown, 2nd wife was given as Elizabeth born in England in 1820 (30 in 1850 Census, NY, Steuben, Painted Post, which gives 1812 as his birth date), third marriage (my g grandmother) was to Elizabeth SAWYER. the 3rd marriage record also lists 1810 as his birth date. He also can be found in the 1865 NY State Census Steuben, Campbell 2nd District. The only death record we can find is the pension record (28 Oct 1885) where his wife filed on behalf of their two children, William (Willie) LUCAS and my grandfather Francis Marion LUCAS. She had remarried by that time. He is recorded as being served with the 35th NY, May 8, 1861, - to Feb 1863, discharged in good health, with no wounds, (1865 Census, IV. Additional inquires relating to officers and enlisted men who have been in the military, page 6, line 18). Also see History of Steuben County, NY, 1879, page 215). William B. LUCAS' enlistment record shows him to be a 40 year old widower on May 8, 1861. It is generally believed that he may have lied his age to get into the fight. William (Willie) LUCAS disappears without a trace. Any help or ideas will certainly be appreciated.
