    3. thought it might be to long to send in one. page 2 John Wood and George Bonham each up up 10 to assure his appearance at the next court, but on the same day Lucas presented himself at court distempered with drink , and for his unseeming behavior both in words and gestures he was committed to prison and fined forty shillings. Though no duration of imprisment was given, it can be understood to be shorter, and probably was only a day or so. He broke his bonds for good behavior when on May 7 161 he was found with Ann Savory, wife of Thomas, at the time of public worship on the Lord's day drunk and under the hedge in an uncivil and beastly manner, and he was to appear at the next cout. On June 10 1661 his sureties lost some of their money when the court called his bond of 20 foreiit, but on further consideration remitted 10 of the same. On Mar 3 1662/63 Thomas Lucas , "it being the third time he hath ben convicted and sentanced in the Court for being drunk," was sentenced to be bublicly whipped; demonstrating rather clearly its concern for deterence, not vengeance, the court ordered the the sentence be stayed "until hee shalbee taken drunke the next time and then hee is to bee forthwith taken and whipt, without further presenting to the Court." Though the court seemed to have difficulty in keeping count it apparently was referring to the higher seriousness of be found drunkk three or more times. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
