    1. [LUCAS-L] Hello
    2. Scott McCaslin
    3. Ladies & Gentlemen: I wanted to let you all know that I am still running this list. The Scott McCaslin is my fiance, and we both have an email address with 1st.net, but he has the account. Currently my computer is partially down. Tuesday night the computer decided to crash. Had to completely format the harddrive. Since the crash we have had trouble with the CD-ROM drive and we are waiting for the company that we bought the computer from to schedule an on-site service, and replace it. So we really can't install everything that is needed, including my email program. It is a good thing that our Internet Service Provider has a webpage that we can check our mail on. This is the only thing that I can currently do at the moment is check mail, and barely get on the Internet. I wanted to let everyone know in case of an email, it may take me a little while to respond. Hopefully, we get someone down here soon. Also, I will be starting a new job on Tuesday, finally. Maybe things will start looking up here once again. I will have Monday, Wednesday, and Thursdays off for a while. I will check my mail at every convience that I have. I hope everyone has a nice weekend. Sincerely, Terri Lucas List Owner Woodsfield, OH http://users.1st.net/mccaslin

    3. Original-From: Tim Pierce <twp@rootsweb.com> Original-Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 18:58:26 -0700 Spam filtering has just been enabled on all RootsWeb lists. From this point on, hopefully we all will experience a marked decrease in spam sent to our lists. When someone sends mail that ``looks like spam'' to one of your lists (more on what that means below), you'll receive a letter that looks like this: From: YOURLIST-L-request@rootsweb.com Subject: we blocked some spam from your list. Hi -- This is an automated notice from the RootsWeb list server. Someone recently sent this message to your list. It looks suspiciously like spam, so it was NOT distributed to your list. However, we're sending you a copy just in case the spam detector made a mistake. If this was actually a legitimate message that shouldn't have been blocked, please forward this message to abuse@rootsweb.com and tell us, so we can try to make the Spam Detective a little smarter. So please give us feedback! Let us know if you start getting spam that the spamcatcher doesn't get, or if the spamcatcher gets a little too enthusiastic and blocks legit messages. WHAT'S BEING FILTERED? ------------------------ What does the list server consider spam? Here's a general summary of what it looks for: * Any message sent to more than 10 RootsWeb lists. Heavy crossposting like this is at least as bad a problem for our servers as spam is. * Messages from the faked mail host `relay.comanche.denmark.eu'. This is a hallmark of that insidious Bulls Eye Gold spam. * Senders with all-numeric e-mail addresses, like 11576@1985.com. * Senders with AOL screen names that have fewer than 3 characters or more than 10; screen names that start with a number; screen names that include punctuation. According to the AOL postmaster, any AOL address that looks like this is faked. * Any message from USA.NET that contains embedded punctuation, like `free-money@usa.net'. * A message with any of these return addresses: agiftforu@... bigweeklypay@... born2win@... bulk@... bulk.barn@... beseen@advertise callnow@... carpediem@... cut.bill.payments cybermarket@... delightful[0-9].*@... donthitreply@... easymoney@... emailersoftware@... free_online_biz@... freebook@.... .*FRIEND@... getyourdegree@... goforthegold@... .*groupcall.*@... .*groupscall.*@... 3. I am trying to find the family of Elizabeth LUCAS who lived in Albion, IL from 1830's to mid 40's. Both Robert Lucas Sr and Jr had daughters of approximately the right age in the 1830 census for Wabash Co. IL. Elizabeth Lucas married William Von CAMPBELL. I have not been able to find them after the 1840 census in Wabash Co. The Lucas families and the Wm Campbells were not in the 1850 census. Elizabeth's family might have been from Ohio (Scioto County) Any suggestions? Elizabeth had two daughters, Mary, born 1837 in Albion and Emma, born 1845, sources vary but either IL or KY Lorraine

    2. Tom Brown
    3. Hello I am new to this list & thought I would post what little I have on my Lucas family & hope for the best. My step-grandfather was a George D. Lucas who according to the SSN rolls was born February 27, 1884 in Sauk Center, Minnesota. He married my grandmother Anna Gaddy in Wallace, Shoshone County, Idaho on February 06, 1927. The only other info I have on George's family is he had two sisters, June & Mary, who also lived in Idaho. From what I can recall about them, they never married and died in Idaho in the 60's & 70's. I have numerous photos taken prior to 1900 that were the property of June & Mary. These are all portraits and most were taken at photo studios in Minn. I do have one taken in Ohio, & Canada. I also have several unmarked. One photo is also signed "W.P. Lucas Larimore Dakota". Two photos were taken by a George L. Lucas who was a photographer for the Northern Pacific Rail Road. If anyone thinks that may have a lead or connection, please let me know. Tom Brown

    3. Subject: Blocking Attachments Resent-Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 21:42:54 -0700 (PDT) Resent-From: listowners-announce@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 21:49:57 -0700 From: Tim Pierce <twp@rootsweb.com> To: listowners-announce@rootsweb.com Hi, folks -- Just to let you know, we're in the final stages of testing a SmartList hack that blocks file attachments (including VCARDS), HTML messages and enriched text postings. This note is to let you know how it works. When a poster sends something to a mailing list written in HTML, or with an attached file, the list server will send the poster's message back to them, with a note at the bottom explaining the plain-text requirement at RootsWeb. A COPY OF THIS REJECTION MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO YOU AS WELL! That's because the poster may write back to you to complain or to ask for help, and it can be pretty confusing if they write a reply to a message that you never saw. So when you suddenly start getting messages from YOURLIST-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com, quoting some ungodly HTML mess that you never saw before, don't be alarmed. :-) It just means the list server is rejecting a MIME message that was sent to your list, and that you may get a response from the poster. This change is not currently something the listowner can turn on and off. Attachments will be blocked from every list alike. This might not be to the taste of some listowners, so we'll consider closely whether it would be safe to make it an optional setting.

    1. [LUCAS-L] Lucas/France
    2. Jean Lucas was born in 1631, probably in France but possibly in Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany. He married Elizabeth Rollaire. The Lucas family is supposed to have been French Huguenots who left France for Germany as a result of the religious persecution. Jean Lucas and family are recorded in the French Reformed churchbooks at Otterberg, Germany. There is some indication that the Lucases came from New Rochelle but no solid proof. Jean's son Francis/Francois left the Palatinate in the first party in 1709, going first to London and then to New York before settling in New Jersey. I have not seen any information on this Lucas line earlier than Jean Lucas though. Possibly the Lucas name was not uncommon in France at one time? 3. Joe, I wonder how many others of us are also researching Powers (le Poer) along with Lucas? My gg grandfather and mother were Anthony Andrew Powers, 3/17/1835, Co. Cork, and Elizabeth A. (Anna?) Lucas, 3/11/1840, Greene Co., OH. Anthony's parents were John C. Powers and Margaret W. Nash and Elizabeth's parents were John R. Lucas, Jr. and Mary Burrell (Burwell?). John R. Lucas Jr's parents were John Lucas and Frances Rains, while John Powers' parents were Edward Powers and Mary Wright. Any help here for you? Is there any help you can grant me? Willing to share. Thanks. Vic Huber

    3. On a recent holiday my father and mother (maiden name Lucas) passed through a village called La Haye-Pesnel in Manche Normandy. A church in the village was called Le Tanu and nearby was a stone cross, with Latin inscription, called Le Croix Lucas (the Lucas cross). Enquiries were made of some local people and they found out that the cross commemorated a Lucas family who had lived there up to the 17th century. Does anyone know any history of the Lucas family in France? Were they originally French (we believed them to be Italian). Any information on this subject, including likely research points, would be gratefully recieved. Joe de la Poer Power
